Van Hunt is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and one of Dax’s longtime obsessions. Van sits down with the armchair expert to discuss his colorful upbringing, his unconventional musical process and the connection between music and comedy. The two of them bond over a history of strong mothers and they ask the question scholars have been debating since the beginning of time: are blind people really blind? Van explains his acceptance of never fitting into a box and Dax practically croaks as Van sings live for the podcast. Monica and Dax debate a controversial topic during the fact check and yet they still like each other at the end of it. Thus, proving the impossible- respectful disagreement can exist!

and what may be a breathless in two different books, one in a mountain Gladwell book that talks about the culture of pride right, Looking at all these long standing family wars like the Hatfield Mccoy right in How many thousands of people were killed and appellation from like family feuds, and he attempted to explain that in his collusion was that most of those people they came from Ireland in Scotland, that's who kind of settled that area appellation and that all Their tradition was hurting and if you're hurt her, you got a fucking stand your ground, like your perimeters, unknown in your mixing with other herds and due to their got a fucking, kill each other to survive, and then they brought that what they label a culture of pride to Kentucky when they brought it to date, no Heil, I'm assuming they certainly brought it up to melt machine. Where guys would
their willing to die over some parties insignificant Would you say your neighbors were like that and they were Lula end always grew up feeling like you had to be a sort of around can the string and always remain the same, no matter what was coming achieve riot of make meal of minors shaped shifts in order to do well to adapt yeah, but is constantly standing around an effective there was no being able to put to us today. I remember a mom pushing me. To fight as I was running into the House and Roma yeah yeah my mom, was very similar. You are raising the mother. I too was raised by a single mother and I think in she had two boys, my brother, not venture. I had a little sisters while but yet
the pressure on heard em, like I gotta, get these boys out of this house. There is so they can protect themselves, choose yeah abnormally pro fighting mission, legends, ivy, unique effectively the story. My mom tells that she relishes the very mouse is my brother. So and were your friends primarily in this and similar situations I didn t have any Friends- and I recall to be honest- I mud mob. Here friends were my friends if they had kids with them, very insular you're my experience, Rome I moved out of Ohio eventually in economic, France, like neighbourhood kids, like a regular guy but other than that like a simultaneous. I know you, don't really put it together till later yeah, but you are fine personally I've, a terrible authority, complex, oh geez, soon, as I recognise someone's in a position of authority, I'm edges it's terrible Diana growing season, Azure, who sometimes we don't get a line of areas but I had tribute a lot of a two hour. us would have this rhythm. Do it my brother, my sister and I life's pretty good we knew how to you now through I've with my mom and then a new dude would enter the scenario, and
It was generally enemy. How back I saw the world we're all gonna die for a little while I very much hope that. Will you didn't mind that will I kids, they don't bullshit. You can't say that that ever was approved for me. My mom would set the stage in a relationship earlier on and she died. You say I am, I taught him to speak. His mind was always going to protect himself out here. And so I did notice. She told me this later on, for when I have run into her boyfriend's, they would generally back down Aurelia awe, and so, if it was like we watch the car. Do it again like forget my do that they were just go back in the house. Can move never like some big stander, so your Mama strong, she was very strong, is presumably strong share losing along the way. They are you going out loud

Yes, he admits that He will tell you in a minute. I was essentially my four brothers dad yeah yeah. into me. I saw this. This was deafening order on my brother than myself ass. He was older, but that too compounded the thing when, when the step that did entered the equation for the new boyfriend cuz, it was like okay, great. So thank you. You've been doing a great job being a dad to your brother and like being emotional bedrock for me, but now now you're on the bench sure isn't that confusing furthermore, I can easily adapt even two ass. I do studio automaton produce in projects with everybody thinks the urging a spear
after allow them to be a genius, a temporal kind of setting a high nor the get something done awry you know that what you're going going to do what you are capable of net doesn't change just because this guy really, that's all, but he's a genius right now for you. Let that happen, and then you swing back around with my parents being Pisces. I imagine helps I being Pisces, must settle agony pretty pretty cool in all situations. And allow them to Canada twirl themselves into whatever they going shape. They're gonna take yeah, and then I can do what I need to do. That takes a ton of confidence and optimism because, at times. I would imagine, if you're producing an artist in your not used almost zero control over what's happening, or at least it feels wait here. That would scare me will Arab, I in control anything except that we keep all the good stuff right.
Me right. So your kind of more there to incur them to get it all out, and then you guys or edit base it later. Europe's new take the the gems out of that makes absolutely no argument, someone all of that a real air like nothing's going to happen. Doesn't my tells me the true a highway Vienna, but you ve always been easy going kid in the sense that America, where you put it in the sense that confidence I urge you to be easygoing her, like my Cogema boxing, don't you start to say the least amount of fights are happening inside the gym everybody knows out right right right idea. Everyone explained move outside proves yes and school. Did you go? Do you want the public eye the indian Year and what was the kind of make up that high school. He was probably sixty thousand black Ok, maybe seventy nine,
five percent is worth it that was why, and then we have five percent funding persian use. Another axing strange and even when there was like an armenian care, prison camp is coming up, is probably grown since Similarly were, I'm from there was a gigantic popular. Its currently still is a huge population. Cal leans. Would almost nobody in the rest of the country knows what Albanians are, which are christian Iraqis? Can I persian juice? Are they gonna goes against what here expecting okay? So your dad somehow is friends with the drama of the Ohio players or many of the Ohio Players nope, particularly if you don't remember the higher players, their skintight deep, didn't. Do you think they d been gaining things skin thing to do but they were you dry. You I mean I have to imagine. There is huge.
Stay in Dayton, Ohio or Ohio will. At the other point, they came along here. They were the first big success, though yeah and are they from Dayton, specifically definite, ok, and by the way you would you fifty miles from Cincinnati rule. Forty five minutes and are you going narrow at all as a kid? This is an area. Is we would drive entity. Try that was our like. Let's go downtown to Vienna is I drove to Detroit more often idea and ended since an archive feeling that's a real feather in our hat. So your dad his friends with the draft- and I have this right, your dad's friends with one of the Ohio player you Jimmy dumb and specifically yes, Jimmy Diamond which, by the way, what a great nicknamed have if your drummer diamond, did they their houses about anything. Oh really, backyards. Ok, ass children, as German near
and so you start playing the drums at seven years old somewhere near here, Who knows? What's Lauren what's real, but suffice it to say that you are young. You start playing the terms at the first instrument yet that inspired by having met Jimmy diamond. Would Definitely was my Mama Father stories had made these people, but they wouldn't. It was another as exciting as like. Listening to stories about the out that was my big thing is like how how It's up systematically yeah really into that yeah. at a young age. Your romanticizing total musicians, music in the whole scene, thing for me was ass. I can understand this is like I hear it in ITALY, made since all of a sudden, it like I like it here in setting a story color of it in. And then- and then I was inspire, doesn't meeting people Didn't you didn't mean as much right like if I may
away from here now like art. I would remember person, Ellie dodges hat of how she got that. What that met blue sure, made right, remember more about Kristen for me, and I think that our Maginnis about you than under curse of really my assumption was that you'd never hurt me when we asked you to do this now operate with nice. point two self esteem riders assume there's no way. You know who I am an unknown You primarily be because of the commercials, but they were so funny to me. I was I Fifty four were high wearing a lot of people are these being mere curling letters
If you don't know who we are the commercial like, we don't ever say Samsung, so it would be confusing, as you be like other, not even talking about the product we're just watch. People live, there must be some people right. That was at the thought process totally agree that hadn't hadn't seen your movies and everything, and then that made me look you up because my girl thought you would save some other Gazette RAF robs unless she, some guy would cricket knows, lay doesn't looking along what else. That's that's very calm then, as I believe they latter accused of sound near him. Sometimes in movies, and I do not pursue nation- couldn't see their of your life. have you ever seen, bottle rocket, now, God it's almost and first movie in its the best. By far and its was Anderson's first movie enormous as lying there he goes. miles warrant Mormons underwrite kitchen,
again as bringer again as you buy groundlings all right, yeah, that's kind of how I started I got here going out. I wanna do comedy of I came to do stand up and then I was You afraid to stand up, and I heard all I could do sketch comedy and then you're gonna, with some people to share the responsibility. So I audition for that and I hadn't acted in the night yeah would through that programme, which took four or five years just found love of writing and acting in all those things yeah now. Did you take a glance at the Renault? Is this really into the comedy calls Oh, you are, as they are real Lenny Bruce the richer priors fan mail is he sets, and I just love idea, stand up. I love the idea comedy troops.
There are some weird overlap. I've noticed so like Conyers obsessed with Kommeni colonies, always at Largo he's friends with ASEAN is there is a weird intertwinings are cross pollination between comedians in people. An arm be will specifically like kind of armed, be or yeah I don't see like coldplay guys at long ago. You don't say I don't know why that is Richard presence lie like time they were weirdness. There was well there's a super outlaw nature to both. Far more like many like richer priors, here's this punk rock the man, possibly man here. That was obsessed with him, and I got some of his very early stand up routines where he was like to set a tiny little club in somewhere in Manhattan and he's I suck my dick
While these, like is presumably strays already means, is our dick awesome the story about twenty minutes, the most he just as Nigger I over and over its own money, is easily. I don't wanna decent ass. The word yet did not work. Maybe it's because when stand up or improv is done amazingly well. There is something musical about it when there's callbacks and every voice something yacht one and think of the tradition of improvisation and jazz yeah right, and then that is quite literally what you're doing at that stage to us like, ok, you're, gonna, take it now I'll take it. There is a lot of communication without so allied to gather in May Weirdly both suffer from the same thing, which is:
Monica named liked. What MRS Monica? It you? U C, b person they at times tried to put comedic improv shows on tv in their terrible, because when you're there in person, the stakes of some unfailing are so high that heightens everything. So if they deliver anything, it's there's a huge relief and it's really funny. But something happens when you viewed on tv. We got all this was written so now that now the bars way higher for what a written sketch should be, and likewise I think you can go, see, live jazz and you can something happened for eighteen minutes, just fucking blows you're mine, but if you heard it on an album, it might be substandard. Absolutely Is that where yeah yeah we're in the room, your card on your toe yeah you knowing when you're watching some there a screen? You don't have that the outgoing there's, no energy to jump you there's, no fear of they're gonna fail, you won't be sharing and met with them. Referred goes.
Plain about never been able to catch their capture, their favorite bans lie on recording. Ah, I think that's the reason yet. Charges have also Corning has evolved quite a bit right back from when fills Spectre was doing he had for tracks at his disposal and he's Pauline and trying to get up to sixteen right. Sir, It is forced to play at the same time right there? that kind of got really broken outbreak, Zat from better or worse what? What school of thought are you from what I don't think it matters. I think the content unfortunately has suffered simply because you don't necessarily see the benefit for your career to work on the craft. I'm so interested in growlings is something there still exists. As this is a school that someone can go through in graduate yeah two thousand ideas. Can a crazy yeah you're right
nothing like that in music, Nashville may be the last place. We can actually go and get an education and be taught how to write. He saw yeah Yes, so you are Aziz Airplane the drums and then shortly thereafter you start playing the base in keyboards my incorrect, and then I think the saxophone alright sends the wrong which, by the way is one of my biggest political platform is based solely on the need to bring sack solos by as therewith there, I challenge you to find a successful song in the seventies and eighties. I didn't have a sweet sack so low in every now and then I'll fuckin. Here when I got me, listen steely man and I was gonna pull over the car and take my pants off a set of an asset in Delicious and then they're gone. They somehow got cheesy and I'm very upset about that. Eighty movies, there's no romantic movie, were when it is time to get wild. That fact,
sack solo comes out with the English at the road map. You agree with that and aren't you may as a prisoner previous saxophone player. You like it is what the fuck happened. The saxophone will somewhere with inappropriate sex. Of course, then you pay the arguments I fuckin mass you need to take a shower after that sax solo, but I love the you know the Ray Charles Sex got thinks he was king, Louis, that's. A good name, can move you better, be other back and blow that size and they re doing low ably I'll everybody welcome to this day, the king Louis, what the fuck! What are they? King Lily in Ripley, sexy ideas here and almost makes you wonder if he's really blind there Have you made any bigger over? There are a lot of buttons. I'm right.
a thousand buttons I'm running a year? Fourteen other is this weird conspiracy theory that Stevie wonders not buying. Have you seen any online, no saying go to Youtube and in watch in there that people have compiled a couple different moments in his life, where he did some uncanny shit. One is like he's walking on a stage and then he somehow a guitar. Then falls and he catches it and you I don't think he had to say. I am not at all perpetuating that that you and I can see, but there is a community of people who think he can see, which is hilarious, and they have found some clips where it appears he can see. I think this evidence for the family, well, did you ever see that movie the prestige
but the magician yes you're right, all the top ten. For me, I can watch him right now. If you go fuck this interview, let's watch, receives, stand up and put it down. yes over! If you remember one of them that that magicians, they idolize, because he never broke character. He lived it on the walk to the theatre. He lived in this house right, so Stevie wonder, would be the ultimate prestige vs. Even if it wasn't mine, you never respected minute, etc and I M going away, sidewalks use aeroplanes, saxophone and the fact that you said you don't. You didn't, have a lot of friends as a kid that lends itself really nicely to probably sitting in your bedroom and learning. Something is that what happened? Absolutely learning instruments at least growing up the friends I had, who got really proficient at an instrument, Workfolk sued
like spending a lot of time in the room by themselves isolating cause. You almost got to do that to get a great at something. Don't you dare? I say I think so, and I know you're saying your childhood was absolutely perfect blast. Do you think it all those sessions of learning and practising were all was an escape from anything oh yeah Mamma would agree with you that she felt like there were there, was escaping. Music itself was an distance. From the environment yeah had she had helped to create rotting You feel some guilty about that, because you can, please allow me, as a probably a reckless point in my life general here here, but I do think you need some solitude, but within which to working yeah This particular do the repetitive kind of work that it takes encumbered anything yet Any money. Funny is so. I didn't have it with an instrument, but things would give hectic at home, and I
this rich or I would go, and I get on the tens. We'd, like an I got to my elementary school news, is very, very tight band of sidewalk that went around the entire length of it and I would ride this, be a mixed bag as fast as humanly possible in a circle, and it took all my concentration, not till I crash into the war, and I would do that for a couple hours and then now all my Hobbes r R, U Motor sport citizen to me, going in the right try going motorcycles at same exacting, where I have got to focus entirely on that moment or I'm gonna crash in there's so much relief in that their an Indian prepared. For the moment like Psych improv near you constantly practicing to look like you're doing it on the fly, yes right, yeah Joe you're playing music and out. This was just a guess for me because when I would try to encourage people to check you out back in two thousand for five to me,
I thought you were the closest thing to prince- that I had as a kid you like prince. Did you did you worship him? I loved prince? Yet, I mean he's right. I think, produces the best recording artists America has produced like bad stay overall, yeah, that's great. While that is done, and now that you're old, like me, isn't even doubly mind boggling that he was making those problems as a kid and he was so young right, then he was nothing started something yeah, how old is ian purple rain, but he was older than me. So I was a kid I was like. Oh he's an adult, but now I realize like this herbal rain as a child word for aid
floors were, whereas these twenty five to twenty five yeah and he's already written purple rain. Here, it's not it's intimidating. If it makes you feel terrible, allow myself to other sites like Dominic. Yes, a beautiful views we arranged song is nasty iraqi of yea awful then twenty four. Ah so were you a media on the prince trained and you were you like early and on it? Yet is probably one of the biggest inspirations other than the local groups I followed really got me into prince earlier, and I used to tell a story to tell about him. Wake me up Miller the night. Like look, look, look. You can be like this. You can believe all rail lack of album, so your dad felt, like you, had some kind of gift, Nicolaus com.
being on Shit rhythmic, where you singing, I was a thing you are Gary Right is my least favoured thing to do. And still work I'm catching up now, probably do that more than I do anything else now right. But then I just didn't didn't make sense to me. So the obvious parallels to me about you and prince are you're both what you'd. Call it multi musician on you. You play a bunch of different instruments right, as did he, and You guys have a similar singing style. I guess, but to me the thing that you guys both have in spades, is there's so much sexuality to both ear music. Oh you agree with that. I appreciate yeah yeah she's supersize. If it is, it is right, yelling, You put it on. You feel like you're, fucking, assisted in
that's a weird hard thing to capture. It's very rare. It's very viscera yeah. It is very visceral and nothing. Therefore, I feel like a comes from there position from the sharecropper blues do like blues. We all know like muddy Waters, Helen with those guys would. Trying to be overtly sexual aha, their music, and I do think that that that was what prince about is where our green yeah, where thing mom was more of an emergent kind of thing. You knows it was still you call a kid in the eye, and you know it in my house yes, everything so insular outcome of isolated. So I was just trying to make too much noise. Of course we're talking about the Georgia of ICE pooper. what are they? How dare you, the George about dogs, all that's great,
It's a good name. There's a lot of bad names in college sports some other races wondering I'm just talking about, like you know the pigeon uppers quicker than as well. I have this lousy glitters, the sooner the one about the fucking suitors, that's who they her plain in the rosebud, alright I'll George, Spain, the suitors, the Obama sooner is so he had a look up, we're like what a stupid name is for her team and in it relates to when Homestead he was happening. Apparently you you had to line up at a certain time and then they shot again and then you gone stake. Your claim in there were people who would go up before the gun was shot. Those were the sooner because it's also it's also so nice, a bad name. It's also kind about cheaters yeah. He asked As you will see, your college mask all. That's a great question. And I went to see allay we were the Merlin burial That's a bear at the baron know what it is there,
two things it did make sense to me into way. After I graduated, one of them was like you had to go on to earth solo, something to sign up for your classes. That was like their network was ursula, something asses, but they train a sound futuristic or some in earth. My mother waiting this was early into the internet, so I thought there pushing to hard Fair Ursula's, like that. The scientific name for bear like the family me, you know what I am may make major. I think, why minors and or something like yours, Ursula Minor Brown bears Ursula major. What about high school? What is what was your scam, high school and we were the Walled Lake central likings. Maybe the vaccine is not really my junior high, my first junior high island junior High was the Scots like the scottish people. That's right! and the Vikings obviously is about Scandinavians, and so it is interesting to me what
do you like to have this conversation? Guy is always rifle unite, argue, It is totally find to have a team referencing. A european country are european population of people. It wouldn't be call right to do the Milwaukee Pakistanis that we don't have the race with. Why wouldn't feel racists, because the Those are minority groups, as opposed to the Scottish, a very massive majority white. Yeah, but if we just start with the notion that the team name is supposed to elicit fear and its rivals because they powerful and mighty right so not just include all the mighty our full historic military operations from the past from all over the world except the Persian empire was gigantic. They took over big chunk of the world, let's
of the yard Toledo Persians now, why not? Because it would first of all its confers on leaving await haven't, takes the Moderns taken either racism element, it would always be confusing. Oh hey, because we referred to minority groups as their ethnicity in this country. We do, if you said, the EU? Now, whatever you call them, say it? Try one hell, Persians, hardly get it out of my oh, how you know what you see. I think this is a weird attempting hence racism. That weirdly now is racist, like you are now saying that the word Persian you may want to state, as if it's a pejorative I now when it already it as an object. I dont want objectify a group of people and make them a symbol of a team of, white guys running around on feel odd, its clearly a celebration, but there's something with a visa.
Versions were come into town. Then I'm gonna get arraign as it Reinhard version they don't. They never thought a bunch of scottish people or call you when we were the sky alveoli. No one thought the vikings we're gonna more their ship. Ok in this country we dont differentiate the general white people by their ancestry, just White people well recently, yes, but have very recently if these in New York, you are still very segregated into a telling in irish Jewish. All these distinctions were I mean. I think it was even a huge deal that that John F Kennedy was going to be. President Zuzu can be the first catholic president that was a big deal so just fine minutes ago, the white people were very identified by their countrymen. George Mauritania, about current: mascots yeah mascots. Now we do not differentiate white people by being irish or scottish or arab tat. Whatever they are, we don't do that we
you do that for minority ground folks, yeah, ok, so then there's more confusion when you call at with you, if you call a team, the Persians people think of Persians, they think of actual Persians. Now, when you call some the scotch or the Vikings no one's thinking. our current vikings in getting. Why do think? Yes, I do think vitamins are largely non existent neuron, but scouts weakens Aristotle? Nobody knows and nobody's thinking that so there or bad ones. Clearly there, the there are the Redskins right in nay, daddy pejorative. That's not it's on a celebration. So are we saying that, because we have a bad track record, generally, making a meal out of the stereotypes that are negative about different groups of people, because we have that history that precludes us from. he's doing the opposite thing, which is celebrating a culture history, the Aztecs.
What an empire that that something that can be celebrated there was there's all these ways to turn to shit on it in Film and television sports teams wonder. But if we have opportunity to celebrate it. I don't see why that's negative, I just don't think it. I don't think it translates in the same way when it's a minority group, because minority groups already get stereotyped all the time they already get objectified and their there already facing an uphill battle. So when you call I'm out as an object to represent two falsely represent a group of people that will hold on, though, falsely it's on a per in school it, but but but none of these schools are my junior. I was not scottish the The Michigan state folks are not spot. I know not, Greece still are it's still a majority group. It's it's still light p,
the usual Abe ruins are not bears. These are just symbols that represents virility strength, prowess and physical apt to its compliment, unless you're using one of these very bad words, then it's never letting people races. all the time without using bad words you're my example like when you, too when people say to black folks there so well spoken. That's a waiter, yeah yeah! That's very races, yeah, that's something racist, whatever any stereo type is often just a thought, a negative thought about someone. Doesn't it make? You know how you can think something negative about someone and not say You know a slur yeah. I think that we should embrace celebrating folks an adult because they're, not the hedge demonic group in the country, it should mean celebrating them is negative. You're right it shouldn't mean that girl, again this logically your right and proper, but
evil emotionally an realistically the way people are treated is not based on logic. It's based on emotion and its based on values. Ok, but do you I just want to be clear for our purposes here. You know I'm not proposing cartoon, drawing of a persian ampere on proposing you called the Persians and there's like a cool sword. Or the HANS New show the stir up in the horse, which was that their mounted troops were the breakthrough of the Huns? That's why they were so successful, so that was their big technological breakthroughs celebrate the idea that at part. The benevolent also feel like white people adopting this thing, that isn't theirs. It think there's something that feels a little bit like appropriation and away as well so I think what you and I are really really debating and in it is that you don't believe there could be a celebration of that culture. You don't trust. Given our history, you know
really believe it would be a celebration of the Persians. I think that's where the rubber meets the road on this one. I think it's a lack of trust, which is very fair. Yeah, maybe I mean, I think, that's that's diluting at a lie. but yeah. I don't know I just what you are saying. If a white person were to pick the HANS, that's a no go yeah. I appreciate your perspective and I love you. I love you and it's very ok. We differ on this. I don't even think in a court of law. I think this would be a mistrial. I don't think they would find In your favour or mine, the people will tell us, I'm sure, yeah I would say that, in fact, the second and talking about where Van came from your reference to Malcolm Gladwell book that discussed culture of pride, also known as culture of honor, I think more commonly this culture of honour and that book is from outliers so and its also referenced
I know from Phil Billy elegy. They talk about that. But then yes, the mountain global books. I can recommend him enough. They are like reading great magazine articles, one chapter after another in Urien. Having a grew up, personally, I don't know that. I agree with his his overarching conclusion, but by getting the ACE material, is so fascinating. Getting the dad or the studies or the history of these family feuds and stuff it so fastening, whether or not you agree with his ultimate conclusion, or so ok and then then had many citizens re Charles Saxophone Guy, and he said he thought his name was King Louis, but based on the information I found it was David, APP Head Newman. Also your balls grid, name's, gay or fat had Newman, but his words team name, the fat had Newman's share. You mentioned a van that he plays a lot of instruments like Prince does, and you call
that multi musician on is not it's called Multi instrumental as firmly as more or more specific, orally, specific, ok and then you said that Detroit was the black, a city in the country.
