The movie totally holds up, and I was saying the shaving is that one never happen again, because no one will ever allow all of their ip to be crushed under one umbrella, and then a week later is like. Oh, my god of where's video games, of course, why? My god, of course it was such a such lovely whenever you're right. Never. Yet it was such a lovely such a lovely moment and and
and I got to be on the dvd and the Blu Ray. That's right when you pause the Blu Ray for too long. Your punishment is that I come on and start yelling at you I know I wanted to put that in the future. That in the cinema- and they let it somewhere telling me that when you're about when you pause the movie theater, just no at various times during the movie, I wanted you to walk out just start yell entity audio. That's a great idea! You telling me that I should buy the dvd, not the blue, issued by the book. Your job, don't need you young idea, your Joe. I don't need your young. Parents with kids at amusement parks are like. Why are you crying and their shaking them? Yours, you're, taking your child, I get it it's not for understanding lion I just step in, but I get to
basically come on. I point out a lot of the references like all video game references in the movie, which was such an honour for me that I got to tell you that, like that mess magician guy, that shows how oh, my god, I have an immediate pilecki. Merited your coming on the screen. I would be into him he's been area to be magician. If a lady of acts, by or on any of these figures, living comfortably in the intergroup somewhere? Maybe that's just my guess, leverage Not if I know I, without an age, if you're out there or if anybody has you actually surgical man. Yes, now none of the great act he's the reins he started? We started a company called Mitchell Leggings, where it had just make a stand right. I may on space around his face. His love boy, moreover, is like the one. The one all have skulls on it for Skype, moulding the damage that there is an egg.
Miles a video game for the pc that I used to play or time which was to use real video footage and you can manipulate sort of like you decide to like pickup, something or whatever, and you can always or you would be called in the sky his office and there be a video Skinner Blank and you can just take your gun out and shoot Skinner and face if you wanted to get out and they wouldn't animate that I wouldn't be shown on the video whenever. But then next cut seem at the next tat scene is always him go, and indeed your badge, he's gotta. Basically, I recently bible. Does the category of ethical issues mentioned in the face? How much of the now I just laudably military. Out there you the truth, Are there out? Did you weren't, real you or use? Are you Sci at all? I am back when, when it wasn't in fashion, orco or good or yes,
We did have good site just not only this going on all I mean why, when it wasn't good to be that kind of fan Yonah for for the younger geeks inert, there was a day when, when Troxler dates rule this planet, if you were a sure like this, you know oh yeah. Now you would get beaten, and dragged by a truck. Well, that's a little harsh pilot. You don't later really talk about. A love. For my I started with them with lost in space. To think when I was about reruns of lost in space to do their duty to them. My gateway, Syphon tv. I loved the theme song doo doo doo, doo doo did it did it did it did it did it nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, even one hour
LISA pocketed a great job and Harris from their went to STAR Trek the original star, Trek Grant Afterthought: North Korea, then do the guarantee every now and again we're not introduce detail mission, far point in surgery, veneration, nineteen, eighty ethics in star wars and both of us the vote. That is just what kind of inherent Jonathan Harris was in STAR wars: in have been greatly group here. I think you would have been a gradual through an imperfect, that's really great you're welcome or a bit of good emperor to yeah you won't, they can feel you he'd, we see the emperor me.
Seeing I remember you see him in like holographic, cannot like in a hologram, really give a holographic. It is, but even that monkey I he's not he's disease, not this, this guy just and also ease he sounded like you just had a stroke, Ursa Legal, he would be a great asset and also Darth Vader later in the original star. Wars is kind of a psycho like he doesn't really gonna get cool calm and collected until the next moving I'm a guy that murders nobody is kind of a psych ass I mean, but but he's he's aggressive, like he's he's an in the follow movies. He's not like oh yeah, he's kind of aggressive in the first movies, whereas even more ass, the like take once he realizes his hands. Set a out or are there is gonna come down if you want custody of them again, he's probably to calm down bit.
That is worth Debbie dad in the universe, Why are you murdered young legs? You couldn't go in the backyard and forced through the ball or with me. I know what it's like. How do you think you'll get that food security in the distance? growth, like blue, looking mailed nice drinking. That's I always that had a problem with him at MA's Isley, because he ordered milk at the bar tests. Abloom Elk, like a guy, Nigeria and joy is gonna, do Are they forget that they cannot Jesus Greek get him out of here, but they probably real it really That thereof, I suggest that he was really feminine brutal Mosely for just ass. We talked about,
holes in this, that it is those stated here that this day you you just four billion dollars. I gotta say which we just watched episode for again the other not that long ago, a few months ago, and it's so gorgeous like those shot of tat a win win. This is, in fact, still ass. The man, that's the one that just absolutely just got its hooks in me and for years, just Have you been to the ranch? Have you seen there? Did you think you to the archives with all of the? No it ain't going the archives. We did our sound mix up there with with Jerry Rights Drum and I met Ben Bert up there and you did all the sound form for the starch searching for the star wars movies and on its it's like wholly ground,
Her sides is so weird walking around and you go into the big main house and there is a Rowan. There's like no one around. You know yes, gonna walk around and in the spirit of Theirs Indiana Jones, his hat and I said idle- and here is one of the original snows Peter models and Darth Vader is light Sabre, it's weird and it's just kind of sitting there. There's like no one around, but you know if you touch it, you know that there's gonna be. Fifty they all come out of the law or there is there some little. Settle the sum, a little security droid that comes out and made its gorgeous interest colonel. So this is where they did all the mat pain that is in the end, this one building where they have like everything you know,
original droids, like ARCA, of an covenant original concept pieces for job, how we gonna carbonated? How diet was not that Willow margin of mad again rat again. They. They also have This line that you had seen a hardware store of shower doors, just slid into these slots, yeah because the shower doors were the aspect. Ratio surround use them format paying, so they just bought In short, our doors right and ended on painted, and so then you know they slide them out and show you and it's a showered over. That's like. Although the scene when there are the hangar and then all of the storm troopers and its backing the millennium falcon, and when you look at it it's a gorgeous painting, but it looks flat and when you take a picture of it, has It just looks like it just looks like it's a real thing. Amazing. I love those old paintings.
Yes, that is neither has the archives dead on when, when I started at the studio they like to take all the new hires over, it's a kind of Oregon check out the archives We were. We keep all the time I got. Thank you. Thank you for inviting us rudely go with eyes. Then come right out under any free already I grant we could go so you go in there, okay, but we have a lot of old. Do you know the old drawings and Van background paintings and stuff, and we like what we like to start by showing you this then pull out a animation older, with animation paper. In there and their light, they don't touch it they're, using like these little sticks. Me and I'll go through the pages, and it's the original rough animation from Steamboat Willie, Jesus Christ, software thirty, oh my god, you're out this, I'm looking at the drawings out. The from but you did in the end it like. What's what is this word? You know what what advice.
Vomited on there's no yeah. I don't even know if there's a prize value on on this, this is and its unaware thousand Langdale, don't tell them Gandhi. I will give you that when they are Arizona, the address is vague, address What we should do is big address the master, the others do just what they they should. They should. They should prank the storage, worse people and just put out of storage facade, he's archives, oh my god, and let them did like fifteen hundred dollars. That's like this! It s. His knowledge is Jochen there or just joking yup guy Ghana Bananas are here, man is here with our bananas. There's so many things that I want to talk to you about a lot of that. You know the process of wreck it Ralph how you're able to pitch and how long the process took. Four. Let's go back to the fact that you, my friend,
citizens. Animate was I work. Who are you I heard of it? Did you know my Virginia my friend but enables- and you know, as I do know, Brad yeah- you kind of came after my time, but we we all get to know each other. What was your? What was your time at symptoms? I was their seas, one through five or you ate a nine through ninety three. So what was the process of of of altering the simpsons between the first and third? The omen of what you have been? Obviously the Tracy Almond was super super rough, but I'm ok I mean the the animation like the character, design change, but between, like the first second third season in homer, went from being frosty chocolate, milkshakes guy more elections more of what we think right now, I think that he began the voice. Tat.
When that always doing something that was more a kind of it was kind of up Walter, Matthau, YAP, impersonate, Felix yeah, prism. Those words her good night Why had that really kind of the Euro is of a more nurturing and kind voice yellin, but he couldn't they found very quickly that the homer needed take to get loud and yes scream a lot and that voice wasn't just conducive to so he tried different things and it just kind of like what the drawing style of it too. We were always of all of you, the characters because more and more people I had to,
draw them in our crew. Kept expanding, so we'd have to build these packs of model sheets to describe in other, have various some angles on the characters and turn around the characters and and that began to kind of solidify them into how they look cause. You start after the first four seasons you stopped ever seeing the characters dead outface on yeah. We stop doing that because, because we felt mallet it just flatten them out, you know, and they just didn't look as appealing as they did when they were at a slight three slash, four or seven slash, eight view me a no sew, but we did do a lot of flat on. I think those were kind of funny. You know that I remember doing a show where we at we just cut the homer's face flat on with this vacant expression, and it played really great. I think- but you know
ray with everything you know did Matt give. Did that was the decision to make them yellow really, so people would think they need to do a just thirty me said, and I think the well I don't know the story that I heard was. There was a color stylus named Georgie pollutes that was in charge of painting all the cells and all the backgrounds on the show when, when they were doing the Tracy Omen Lords and Georgie loved like these kind of bright colors, and that she can have invented that that color palette for the show and she just thou well Panem flash- would be boring. So
Now, I'm just gonna, Panem, yellow and see what they said. I guess it stuck in ozone. That's the story. I heard the wise, the other one. I sales like all they did so people think they had to adjust the color on their sides. What was funny is in that first season we used to go through. There is to be a step in the process called tell us any. You know where you would send the print to this place. With balance, the color for television Euro was like the step between filming and video, and they didn't know that the characters were supposed to be yellow, so they would try to hijack the kind of a flash collar. That's mine, that first season there is some doubt the color, the yellow, color kind of fluctuates, alot, yellow the kind of they might, oh god, I totally know what you're talking about. If you go back to the first season in someone had to say, like gotta, tell us any gains: ain't, no they're supposed to be yellow, stop trying to
but only after the first entire stays that I feel like. Maybe we should talk to this guy. What is happening in between? As regards this, guy was trying to you know, I don't know, what's wrong about painters overseas, they keep doing this really yellow, looking flesh colored. So man, I took the icon, by what I couldn't major animation and when you silly, I could major innovation there, because you have to be in the film programme to do that. But I took the animation I took. I took the horses and there the professor there's, this guy named Dan Mclaughlin. Did you know tat. I know a lot of people who, once you see Elaine talk about him down and he have this sort of voices and the ability to use the just week either way, of course, behind a beggar like and then, of course, we had to find a place to. Mary, the bodies, birds. You know where you're going to find a shovel of three. I am, and here I wasn't dead, dark Brown got exactly how we stand at the moment, but Denmark love
an animated, although he was responsible for others, old sesame Street shorts, where it was like you'd see the three kids, the fruit vendor and then like one would get an orange and one would get an apple just. Finally, they gave it did the pinball machine for one two, three, four, five: six, seven and eight and eleven eleven twelve and the pointer sisters, loss of society. But was a sweet guy, and so this was of course back in the back in the days when people We would have an intimation table right. Draw. You have to paint things and you ve got a game and that's how the Simpsons were done. I mean the Simpsons were done, what the exact same technology, that they did snow white, also really just as a matter of process, not being changed very much from the first,
I think this is a little too slick now. I think you need a you need a little element of little shitting us in there. I think they resisted going digit all four years in offer that for that reason, because whenever they would do TAT S, what the new technology some amount would think it's a slick, it looks to slick like you're saying in it looks, Digital looks electronic at and it lost kind of the homemade quality of the show and- and they did all kinds of think they try to put like film grain over the whole thing up: shitty, vital city, filter on and gamma there's something about the old episodes
no, not just because I worked on them, but something tactile, something TAT, Thailand and, and and about rough about that, the that I really love on. We were painting on cells at that time. To use it was great, I will take one It isn't terrorism around five once I got it now. So so, when you do so when you're doing a false e g movie is, is there any point viewed the animation earn you that's a little broken hearted like monopoly. We could print out a scene from it, but it's not, but we don't have the cells and that's not like a functional piece of the process. Right, you're, just kind of making something. That's collectible, wrangles like when Disney would put out the limited edition Cinderella sell out just made for four collectors. It wasn't an actual frame from the movie and that's it.
I always loved about cells, and you know it's like this. You know is one of many that they've made the scene. You know that made it work. It's not just like a piece of art that someone manufacturer to sell as a I have a couple of fun cells, I have a run instantly cell and then I have a wizard cell better than I bought from raft actually signed. Any court Ralph was he was. That was the first I had and out of call you oughta wizards, no, not without on that was kind of that rouse Pinnacle. I caught him and then caught em what he was doing. The mighty males Saturday morning with John K, yeah with John no for a lot of us myself by Andrew staring,
tourism Riordan Bruce term without a lot of logic. Vicki Jensen was a director on Shreck, just lotta great people. Great people were there show on that show, and it was for myself written and Jim Stanton and our first job out of cow, large and and Ralph hired us as writers for supper. Today more than cartoons, regular Ralph. Actually, oh, my god I mean it was. It was the best first job for a year Animator right here. That show was so like the result. My mouth John Canada Podcast heroine of sick there were it just sort of crept through any
like? We all showed up in and all the sudden it was like. We have to make a show round. We don't really have a lot of time and effort. We ever one all the animals have to write it because there's GINO. If was so strange, I mean it was a really. I don't know how many work got done, cannot with just like going to work in an messing around just kind of fucking around and you know and is burdensome drawings and stuff somehow these shows we're getting done, and the summit has the sensor, and I mean there wasn't really object objectionable things to them. They were just weird. Yet a beverage is very kind of surreal and obtuse, and what's the sensor gonna say we can't put that on. That's two up tubes brand
that's true absurd. It follows it just falls outside of side, but it was great. Ralph was actually the first, the first guy to give me a chance at directing you know, so I credit or blame the great Ralph back she for wasting me upon the planet, there's no way when you're working on Simpson season, one you like this is gonna go for twenty five snow, but I remember thinking at and it was. There was a weird time back then, because it was pretty boy. Free. Animation like this was like eighty nine in know and coming out of college there. What you couldn't really go to Disney had not kind of out that step forward with the little mermaid and all that that was all can in the work and television animation was a mess. I was no nation which had just gone out of business, of and Deak D,
yea evident Gadget inspector gadget and and lots of shame placed on toys in you know, so there wasn't really much out there. You know assorted land, a job someone like back seem, you know who really try and he was pitching, shows like crazy to networks and that's that's where we really got a lot of fun, you not working on these wild projects with them, they're just wasn't. There was kind of a wasteland at that time. So when, when the Simpsons came around, there were very few people on the staff, the really kind of understood what Matt and Jim Brooks and SAM Simon were really trying to do with this. You know, and you got a lot of people working on and on the animation and who had worked on stuff like Scooby, do arise all those Hannah, barbaric cartoons in the seventies and they distant
Lee. They didn't understand not trying to be mean, you know, but they just and understand, but the sense of humour was- and there was maybe about ten of us on the staff in other kind of got, but it was you know, and we would read the scripts and save me, and I would say to myself: I thank God. This is called. You know this is everything I've ever wanted to. Do. You know any animation and dumb. If, if I don't, you know, give it my all, I don't think I'll be able to live with my second. If this doesn't get off the ground and end have a chance. I I can't live with myself in the future, also Can I just absolutely poured my heart and soul into that show in the first, the first season was just. I cannot remember anything else going on in the world except simpsons think there's a whole area of my life for about three or four years that
was the president of of current events from that time, and also I do I have idea what you're talking I was on the simpsons than its such an incredible like that, like a good, you know, many people really understand, but a really good cartoon requires there's a little bit of luck, that at every point that every artist to it's like you have to have him. Music, yet of amazing performances. Yet of amazing our you have amazing direction. You have to have amazing story like there, so many different places where it can sag and when it works and and when it works its great, but the Simpsons had kind of it. It had kind of a rocky beginning the series, because there were people working on the show on the animation and who did not understand what we were trying to do and fox almost when, when we screened the very first episode
network work. They almost pull the plug on Jesus says it was not mean like the Simpsons, like you know it now, and dumb. They said this is what is this just like a Saturday morning cartoon you know and jumper if it and, if not, for Jim, Brook saying to turn member who is very Diller who is in charge them the studio there at that time? is said, no we'll get it won't. You know we ve got good people on it. Right now will well, you know, will get the humor if not for Gemlike, saint pleasing I'll, give us another tat. There would be Simpsons I mean there was a moment. Word look like you know. This was not going to happen and that, but they want to do couldn't be done. You know, but then, luckily is shows start to come back. You another were directed by the people. You know ve been what the show now four years.
They realize. Ok, we can do this. This is part of my god. That's they just like even thinking about a world without the Simpsons and well happens to comedy, and Conan it like all like and just all like, just the the the ripple effect that that had across many, a bunch of young people in their company development- oh my god, and everything that came they have would be so different. Does it hurt? when you were growing up, who was here, do you know who you're sort who we're animation heroes? My animation heroes, while I loved of the looney tunes cartoons. I love Chuck Jones attack. Savory bob clamp it. You know those with that I did you like with the aims that I knew I didn't I you know. I talked to John K, that's what I like. I really like the Robert MC camps in years, and then he was now they were gray. While I mean there, I like em, you know, but they it's just another style with the characters like I I like all those,
actors that I like for israeli nigh. Like I like know, you know I like frizzes much as I like Bob lamp it but shock had this way of mean like he. To have the talent that he had as an artist, but also the comedy brain that he read as well, but just those like ITALY could you see like bugs? funny, like you know, when the tortoise and the hare, anybody rubs the tortoise his head and it looks like there's a skull underneath the animators were amazing. You know they had a crew, the the Warner animators and the amount of foot they had to crank out. You know a week. The those guys were is good. I think, as like the Disney's nine old man, how many drawings per second was it. Was it like twenty well, its film is twenty four afraid my face for second, yes, on one's bright, also on two's, what we that's, exposing each Rhine, twice rain
it would be twelve frames, you know a second, but the cheaper animation likened the Hanover barriers later was like those that was on four's on six right. You know, there's lots of holds me unaware that the character which is hold and all their Anna meeting as the mouth, Put a blank on the walk behind a Bush of Bush gathered. Bragging bars there are so others are. I went and I'm it's a cartoon dump yeah yeah effects. Reed's. They show like in an initial like the worst animation right, but I remain the worst, though the most poorly animated thing that even as a kid I was like off with it, was the mighty Hercules terminology and when it was like with Pat, yet and they would, I was always walking behind a bush, and there is That very guilty were continue.

We just gave away on the site in the newsletter. We just picked my women newsletter and then the website your website is check it out. I mean the second largest combat likely. What's the word, we gave him the fort for Regular Ralph when we the best the year that, in my opinion, is regular, It was the happiest day every we should. I think we should consult you have made and I would even go on that pays you I go on the site,
If there's a little, I mean I'm just saying I wasn't I could support. I can support the idea of giving reckon wrath the best picture here. I'd like I just feel like we're. May be ignored, skyful that's his problem right now we may just like us, forget about Skype, he's been we had a best, let's go at best best movie, that isn't Skype regular out to me to be fair. It would be fair riddle, lumber map, Myra wants to be James Bond underwear, just man I will go and James Bond back cousin he many magically bond Thursday. You covered grandma's thing. Now we really big. I've, told you to sabotage. There's like a those wool. Walter Lothar
Then a mother- I don't know it's people, goods, capital, you'll, be triple Well, I guess I soon celebrate sounds like you can say something ridge days underage so hang about limiting Morocco, IRA Lyra to be fair. I love has no sway over anything so hundred years. They represent your. They try. They try to draw up a list of noise at all that bad virus math I met. My work, goes home places, Lefthanded, Dave, Matthews, guitar and weeps, while he's watching the dvd extras on Skyful, usually I'll, grab less that's closeness to the tv.
But I do I do want to, but I do want to write about, or they came from me, not him hope, you're, not an academy member. I am- and I voted was this. There are over two years and helping mad mad mad mad does not speak for nervous Are you now? Are you I'm going to cancel a lot of those interviews? I always used identifies a geek. I think I think it's a real old term. It like we didn't where I grew up in Memphis and the word. Actually. We did not use either word until the movie revenge of the nerves came out and now and then a lot of us while the few of us today, the time was a very small group. That identified is as what ended up being nerds, and I think it was just like. Ok, Therefore, we are because that signals at all. I think that's me up. There are other things that we do, and so I ask
so I think it was regional. We honoured- and I think other people use gave some people say that you know some people say: geeks are more pop culture. Nerves are more technical and some people say the reverse and some people say nerd, sir, so people say nerds life hop something context. I thought you said enough. I think some people say nerves are more socially awkward, some people say geeks. I think it's just I were, I think, we're all saying the same thing I think geeks were weren't. They like sideshow folk. They bid the headless chickens, object yes to Europe, we're showman from the Jes run a german word jack, and now but I think was its nerds origin came from doktor source. I don't really. I think there was It was really was a from Doktor Seuss Book, happy days. I remember like I think before that, is the column nerds you knew earned a maybe it's from Gary Marshall. Them
look at these nerds here in my studio- and I want you to say: is this my first? We have the very interesting story that I'm gonna tell in great detail about a doctor's sues, rear door, guys may these murders are cash cow. I just imagine that the Gary Marshall is very similar to his character help dish where he was the head of the network Harry marshals rather it is an honour for the record I wanna go. I agree with you. I think they Gary Marshal had well, I mean it's like it's like Gary Marshall, made Skyful. That's how good it is. I wish you would sky fall out of this apart studio, Skype. All you guys
is pretty good. You can use the night in the writer obstacle. Where did everything is rigorously lose that happening? money right, we're gonna, do it right. Let's do I think I think it's it's just it just may happen I'm into it. Can I just left be applied, want to say one word. I don't give a shit what it is, even if it's like Hell, Ralph whatever it is, matter like Corolla. We avoid doesn't move it up that about come up, so how much of the movie was? How much of the movie did you did did so and John play around with a hammock is so much of it like, especially within European, Are you really feel Sarah in there in an hour? Writer was right.
Really great at writing. Dialogue for Sarah, you know, but I would always let the two of what we will do our process and recording would be starting. Love is not with what was on the pay: your own and get a few takes a that. Usually that was just kind of I'd, be kind of armour, her soul. Just kind of warming up, you know for a scene, and then we had a very kind of democratic room. You know where we would have the the writer. There are have story. There are the actors, of course, myself and then we would, just you know, take a moment go okay. How can we make this better? You know how it without being precious to anyone, part of the process. You know, and then I would let them kind of go with it. A little bit You know and then take a way off the reservation to your way away from the page you now and let them let the actors really have fun with it, just take it to where they would want to go.
What that and then we'd always end where I would kind of real and back in a little bit to try and kind of get it on to point it out. So we had a really good tat. It was really very collaborative creative process. You know that I wanted to play to the strengths of of John and Sir, and all the whole cast were of just been able to act off of one another and be spontaneous and enter have that chemistry. You know that that happens between comedic actor yellin and not and not squelch, that you know by by being a slave to the adaptation process. Yet what could it that ever at the I did a voice and a so called barnyard an end. So barnyard we recorded an entire cast, which is rare, lifetimes they'll. Have you record one time and we really we recorded as an entire cast, and then we would come to do a similar thing where we were gonna win. A regular pass as written and then like a they. Always they they are. They would call it lets you away
that's right, and so you do that, and most of it was totally usable, because your would always went like inevitably was and now I raining shit on this forest and the boy the Fucker Function- was that a lot of stuff they were able to use, but it is connected. The actors in a way when you're just reading lines up a page. You may not necessarily get forced everyone to connect, right and and and in those kind of crazy passes. You know it can unlock something that may be, as you know as discovered is not quite right, but then you can just kind of folded right in two on other pass yeah thing. So I am a firm believer in just kind of playing with the material oh, you know not being precious to you not. This is how it should be every word of it
his golden just say it how it is here and you ultimately want what the thoughts the funniest and- and I think that when I have someone like like John and Serene and Jack Ms Breyer and Jane Land Chanel and to Dick, you know it's like they, they can bring some and that's why I wanted those actors. You know, because there would be something in the characters that they would get out there, that myself, the writer would not you know. Think of you know, so that's it. That's exactly why wanted them involved can bring that extra. I also wanted to drop that references to let you know that I have not a voice overwork, and so I could easily say: hey Ralph terribly, very met. My arrival was not adopted, the guess what they mean opposite. I'm sorry if the fiftieth anniversary of James Bond is very important to me? Ok or it I don't want. This is worth
You are our praise where Europe is Kyle R P, a reference that The office is true or not, but that are you a model for one of the characters on the simpsons? Were you a model for one of the debate today He was a reference point. We did model for one of the characters a day today today, as we did for that so nice, the air says the Simpsons are always described as grotesque, and, I do not think there was a boy where we did caricature Is that where there is a character and
and I believe myself and David Silverman, one of the other directors and unless Archer made in there's like a big model pack that, wherever, although the term of the characters, you know that that every one tiny dipson through to kind of poor characters from our character, maiden in there and every so often like my kids will sail. Oh, he did you're on some suspected because, like when you watch when you watch the booty episode and all the writers rather taming like what those guys are had, you have written on the show that those reactors of the writers and- and I think what up a sword when at Myers at the achieved, scratchy studio its David western Iron, like that, the animals- that's cool, so there's lots of caricaturist that are in the background in simpsons, even though,
MAC, raining hates those often say like I hated in and Warner Brothers cartoons work all the sun, the background characters. You know they look overly design just now like that caricature of someone who I have no idea who it is. I don't care, you know, I don't care, and it just takes me right out of the cartoon, so don't put any of those into the simpsons. And of course we want those and get a certain point there just that he can't you MAC raining can't get out of his house because of the money pile in front door, and then you have a lightning. You have the opportunity to do other things. You're never going to push I would love to see that it was borders really just cash everywhere. This there's like theirs is dead animals trapped under pile, but with
Member and a really I've Zactly, looks like just filled with money, we're just found body and soul. Yours, you take the view that a massive amount of money but enough- but I think this one here I feel like they could. LISA thirty million dollars in cash. It would still go for it. Fifteen hundred dollars at loggerheads still governor dollars does all collector those, though ass bags, look like now very old Brinks back. Now here's married people like these, like anyone interested in a cash, I think there could be something back there like a box. I think it behind those passages. Mass all those digital make like there's just make like ghosts, duck, storage, hunters,
you're. Looking for a haunted, storage begins with the souls of ducks and they emit that. Other aspects I would like is currently lies at all, but of course they would talk. Goes Doc, scared, the hell the boy! You don't believe in let's ride him on your head, ammonia Brown, but it just occurred to you that goes this bit closely in this old woman rate. Goes you scare other people, but you can't scare me Europe duels real! I thought you would say him shaped. How did you feel that ports till you know they they always you're right under event that they always buy stuff, that the bureau on cannot experience
again if it goes felt. Something go through me. They're just told me to the ball, a jury notice likely they watched the footage like something I'll go across the street. They something when across the screen and put a circle around you're, still like second death penalty. It does no that underpin its an unavoidable that aren't you weren't there bro that thing go right through me now and then, and then we use. Magic microphone events, Navy pays is, meter that they have which is dead. It's gonna call me give me please get out, you're you're, taking the undoubted academic Katy meter, which is that thing that always a penny shoved them where it's like this is their scientific being met me the plenty to hold down the button feel that role what I do want to point out, one cartoon that I think that that I think a lot of people like people reckless
our age or kind animation, there's no about but does not get enough credit anymore as duck man was fucking great agonizing, rape. Last Glasgow pupil was yeah. That's what's his name ever pack who designed it is over later, The USA is Friday night ass. I sat here and I learned of Greater Zander deals are really really funny. Show man, I love that should come back, but but but back to that direct Ralph. I have this whenever one screenwriter Ralph, I thought we were just talking about well. Even eighty shows like about goes storage. Even if you ve already seen wreck around, you can watch it again on Blu Ray, say: I'm trying I want you should raise already out. I already presented its fine. You wanna go right to sleep, you just turn and examined as commentary on your right to say, but I did what I got for it. It was a joy
Sometimes you need now is a super tired. How long does it take? Did you when you're doing it would do you do any how much hand drawing goes into the character design and then when does it hop over to full Fiji What? How long does it take to make regular Ralph? Well, the whole thing took about, just a little under four years, which is actually a pretty quick schedule for a movie I mean. Sometimes a movie can take twice as long as you know, some take eight years. I be it to executive and go for years. It's an hour and a half. What are you doing? Do a hundred substances or? U turn on your computer and daddy daddy? You don't don't know my grave did. Do I'm gonna bring a man, I'm gonna bring my grand getting ok, you Brandon ran all that Youtube Brandon. What I do I really doubt,
What do you want when I was six days gallery there? I dont know what how works. We would operator. I was not even your which of my wives, you, author, on the president's the present just scares me. I've got a lot of where I am present, that systems in this time period, president vice what have we don't even know? What to do? I wake up Every morning I go wise whether roads Brandon, just showing our lives for you too, for years and that first, the first night twelve months was writing the first draft of the script. Error was just time,
myself and fill Johnston working together. On that, We did a table reader that script up Pixar and that's when they kind of decided. Yes, you know this is me out. This is a movie worth making. And weeds. We had about eighteen months of story boarding and during that eighteen months, eighteen months about two years, we we make very rough versions of we ve using story board panels and and building these Anna Maddox, and we can watch it as a complete movie, and am I get together with my colleagues when we talk about what's working? What is and how can we make it better than we do that seven times change the course of the film and, in theory, is supposed to be getting better and better. You know, and at the same time that that's going on were designing, the movie were designing every prop, every background, every every character, and it does begin with handwriting.
I'm with with sketches and trying to discover you know what what kind of character is Ralphie you know. Is he a animal? Is he a human? Is he you know? Is he a monster? You know so we we we leave no stone unturned in in really kind of trying to get the best. You know for these fill and then we had about a nine month period of animated and we go into production. Work making the movie. We have to light the movie at the end. You know because we're basically working within a 3d set. You know that's within the computer and just like a real site, you at the light that you know he has put lights and to make everything, but the best I can be so it's a long, tedious, arduous process.
Love me ass. The control freaks dream come true. Of course, you to manipulate the entire world as well about the Simpsons too. Was that especially for comedy and animation you can. I had the ability to compete. Oh a scene right down to the frame you know of leg. Ok it it was a matter of ok should should get hit on the head on frame two or three. Two in a really came down to that science of splitting hairs with with frames like what is the funniest. You know down to one twenty. Fourth, like a second so, and it's always like Jude like when you're on the recording side and you're. You know you bring all this, you bring whatever you think you can to the that the suffering reading and then you actually see the visuals near like. I had no idea that visual gag there's still so many other wonderful
things happen and what school is like every step of the process, kind of feeds, every other part you know like, I would show John and Sarah? You know those story reels those talking about you not to give them an idea of what the movies can feel like it. Gonna pick up on that, like the energy of of what the scene is about, you know and then would show the animators reference footing. Footage of of John or Sarah Jane jack, you know recording and their very kind of animated in there. You know they don't just stand there and you know talk, you know they're really getting into the part and, The animators would pick up on little nuances. You know from the actors some the story. Crews sometimes feeds off of the design team. You know they see a cool design that someone did for a character and those they all that I saw
I'm going to put them into the seeing you know or the design team sees what the story crew is doing and saying lots of neat location. I want to try to play around with that. You know so. It's so collaborative you know where one piece kind of, even though it's ten compartmentalize do you know in two different steps. Process, they really overlap and touching, it think waits I mean as animation director. I think it's an incredible feet because you have to you have to have singular vision, but I think you also have to buy soon be flexible to allow all the different people to do their job not because we focused too much on one area than the other. Then it just doesn't work as a whole peacefully and- and I am always the biggest part of my job is to listen. You know, because I am working with was some of the greatest Artists, animators actors, technicians in the world, you know and they they they are there because they have great opinions on you know their area of expertise.
If I start to pretend like I've got all the answers and you know, then I'm not going to get half of what the movie can be. So I'm always. Yeah I do. I do remain flexible. I do kind of stick to my guns as far as the vision of what the the movie should be, but always listen to kind of what? What? What can we fold in here? You know too, to make that the best that can be. Why think in a racket, wrath and once again, when I saw the previews like. Ok, please don't let this just be a movie that all that is only held up by the references in it and then, when you see, if you like, oh my god, that those just enhance this beautiful story and then again that a chuck thing saying like it, I it's all about the story. And then it can't be about anything else. And and that's where we, when I started with the idea of how came you know the life of video game characters, I thought in others a real temptation
here, that its of just making the movie about game references like you're, insane or or just action, or you know about something, that's just about plot and also we kind of put fillin. I put aside for a period of time the whole idea of this being about game characters and said we just. We have to concentrate on a very human story of farming character. And we spent weeks and months of really kind of honing that in knowing and getting in a really to the core of like well who's arming character, and what does he want? What's he doing in and then we can of brought in the game, references and kind, aware, in and then had fun with that used it more to enhance it or just to describe the world not so much to make it the main focus of, but the movie was about now. Well, it's I again. I love the movie. I hope I hope
there's a sequel, and they made me my girlfriend- is gonna cost players Penelope like she's? Eddie built mazes, pretty good ones on yeah, I have to say I have to say I did I've been like that really fast. You know just overnight its leg. Oh my god. You know on Facebook, there's this lake pages devoted to Vienna, you're pretty Ralph at thing. If you could do pretty rough, you'd have to buy that. Maybe they should sell the Ralph knows dive, be pretty good likes. It did you, kids, you could start, on the massive. Maybe I should sell to Disney. Of course, but what about my god? Michael yields, treasure box, Welcome to my house, make up stuff. Videos dread, not astronomers anymore. That's what he's he's gonna head of doing that is now there it's in there that power remember that little goes through the Oscar you can, but this is awards,
and sharing and and We want a bomb when you arrive, there's a crazy red carpet, no matter what the the unease dab dab now so and Andy, I find a let the people will say like. Oh you, clean up well Doesn't by definition anyone clean up pretty well at all. You know the implication is like really you look language law. Does anyone? Does anyone look worse when they get clean, and so It's for you I don't it's, it's a really does it just me like. Oh, I see you took a shower and promote its it's the outbreaks, the complex salt yeah. Whereas, like ok, thank you order with comedians. Always I ve been until for any length of time that people come up and then they see in some ago. I never thought you have body but
Thank you you weigh offer today. Thank you. That's it. You became funny that no eyes like you're a lot of people kiss your ass off its I've builder, not Adele. I gotta go hunt for a goes into storage unit with clacks. The crowd like good idea, Panthers understandings. Oh yeah, yeah, and then you have to pay off the value the duck goes rigorously and afterwards there we ve come up, the things you have here an idea man before you now. I just get these ideas, They just coming to me. I've casting movie business, the duration of the word over, as I think we can go, the team we make it already money that we can solve. Our first answer can be the designer surgical, Mass and Tokyo. This perfect really is perfect. Can I get them here, even Tokyo,
