House Republicans voted Wednesday to remove Rep. Liz Cheney from the No. 3 position in caucus leadership after she vocally rebuked Donald Trump.

This is an unofficial transcript meant for reference. Accuracy is not guaranteed.
I never thought I'd be Pro Cheney in any way, but it has happened. She was removed basically for telling the truth. She gave an impassioned speech on the floor of the house last night, which was empty because all her colleagues left she said Republicans must speak the truth. The election not stolen. So she had to go can have Republicans going around saying Biden won the election, people might get the right idea has republic. Voted to kick list chaining out of her leadership role, publicans haven't, some in this fast since they tried to murder MIKE tents. You get, the it was upset when he offered to take. Has minority leader Kim and Carthagena hunting trip to talk it over this chinese savage. She doesn't want to get near the oval office and ever again set that hard I have to do, is hang assign outside this is just sell it
good morning and welcome to morning Joe. It is Thursday may thirteen to be funny. But it's all true, along with what you and me. We have co founder of punch ball. whose Jake Sherman he's an MSNBC political contributor, White House Quarter for the Associated Press, Jonathan Le Maire and founder of the conservative website, the bulwark author of how the right lost its mind, which is the question we need to answer today. Cheerily Sykes job, will be tomorrow, but we'll dive right in after being ousted from Republican later Congresswoman Liz Cheney is vowing to keep up the fight to break former president trumps grip on the GEO P House. Republicans voted behind closed doors, yesterday to remove Cheney as conference chair for telling the truth meeting that lasted less than twenty minutes. According to a source in the room. Chinese spoke to her colleagues before the vote saying in part, we must be true to our
suppose, and to the constitution. We cannot let the former president drag us backward and maker complicit in his efforts to unravel our democracy down that flies our destruction and potentially the destruction of our country, The congresswoman spoke to reporters after the vote, including our own Casey Hunt. I will do everything I can to ensure that the president never again gets anywhere near the oval office. We have seen the danger that he continues to provoke with his language. we have seen his lack of commitment and dedication to the constitution and I think it's very word and that we make sure who met we elect is somebody who will be faithful to the constitution,
can you feel betrayed by today's vote? I do not. I think that it is an indication of where the Republican Party is Ann, and I think that the party is in a place that we've got to bring it back from, and we've got to get back to a position where we are a party that can fight for conservative principles that can fight for substance. We cannot be dragged back, by the very dangerous lies of a former president. Thank you in Congress. Jenny was removed from leadership by a voice vote, meaning none of those Republicans had to record for history. The They voted they're just hours after voting to remove loose change from house leader Minority later Kevin Mccarthy stood outside white house. After meeting with President Biden and actually said this- and I thank you- buddy is questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election. I think that is all over with we're sitting here with the president today. So from that I don't think there's a brown present. Trumpet
any other Republicans, of course, are questioning the outcome of the election. The fact is the Theo out, one hundred forty six out the Republicans all voted on January. Six, the same day, the capital was attacked by insurrectionists who wanted to overturn the election. They voted not to serve that. Joe Biden had in fact one any four months later now, many Republicans are still hesitant to say publicly that president by one legitimately that includes likely successor to list chinese Republican Leadership postcard, come in at least a fond of New York who claimed just last week Elect officials engaged in quote unprecedented unconstitutional over reach, she waste her support for the baseless Rico in the state of Arizona under way. Right now, so Charlie likes really a breathtaking day from about nine Am Ford for congressional Republicans. When you look at the vote itself vote and unrecorded vote to oust List Cheney, Kevin
Arthur saying no one's questioning the outcome of the election will get to this later, but several Republicans in it national hearing. Basically, engaging in January six truth or resume saying what you saw happened didn't happen. It was just a group of tourists moving through the capital will get to that later, but your thoughts about what you saw play out yesterday. Well, it did. It seems like an old story, but it all came together yesterday and we know what happened with less Janey by the Republican caucus was was cowardly, it was dishonest and it was politically stupid and Kevin Mccarthy is now decide. That is best strategy is to lie about the lie in the contrast between list chain Standing on principle. Not backing down is extraordinary. You mention some of the other thing that we're said yesterday. I was also struck by the fact that you have you know this we're from Georgia who says that what happened on January six was just to tourists Juno peacefully walking through the capital they're not going to sanction him.
No controversy within the republican caucus about him, but leaves Cheney who has said now whitewash the ins, action who, who has had the election was legitimate, was thrown out they did not have the courage either show up and listen to her final speech on the floor of the house, which was remarkable. They did not have the courage to have an open vote or have a recorded vote that was cowardly. And its profoundly stupid, because a serious- party would have been talking about some of the issues facing the country yesterday and instead, what is Kevin, Mccarthy doing is having the entire new cycle, overtaken by his purge of Liz Cheney, I think that you not, we are seeing the Republican Party might by the other reason it's stupid. Of course, is that he's this raises chinese profile dramatically. She is far more prominent today. Then she was a week ago. So if, if he thought he was
putting an end to this. That was delusional and one last point that that comment that no one is questioning the election has he paid. Any attention to what the former guy is saying on a daily basis. Down on the Orange Versailles is putting out ones. One after another questioning the election. Bracing one crazy conspiracy, theory after another, and so here is a party that cannot tell Least, Cheney cannot either a vote on this Cheney open vote, but continues to be in the throne, of this guy who continues who deny that he lost the election and appears to be embracing. Weird, I of some, are during the election, so the crew the stupid and the dishonest very strong and republican party. Yesterday it was a vote on the truth, and I use the words vit, revisionist history and delusional. This is what leads to
downfall of a democracy, democracy, and it can't be put lighter when you have a group of people who run a part. a political party, one of two main political parties who are acting in a delusional way. It's So dangerous and loose change is just trying to tell the truth and try warn them that their lies there bold face lies are in this country and are putting this country in danger and putting this country endanger around the world, destroying our p. in the world. Kevin Mccarthy is a bold face liar and all the republic standing behind a main lockstep Andalusia. Sephardic. They have made that choice to be bold, face liars to the american people. Here's what we're talking about now, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing yesterday, January sixth. Attack on the capital, people are going to jail for the crimes they committed. That day, in which
heard. Several members of the Trump wing of the Republican Party offer blatantly fall accounts of what happened that day there was tranche supporters, lost their lives that day, I'd, not Thompson, those who were taking the lives of others. My constituents demand answers, but the truth is being censored and covered up as a The deal jeers harassing harassing peaceful patriots across the country show was generally in a direction, or could it be more accurately described as a mob of missed? It no insurrection and to call it an insurrection, in my opinion, is a bold face, lie watching the tv, judge of those who entered the capital and walk through statuary Hall showed me. Will, in an orderly fashion, staying between the stance in robes taking videos and pictures? You knock, you didn't know the teenage goods. A video from January. The six we would actually It was a normal tourist visit.
I don't think so actually goes our Fallon Clyde all lying There is new video of that normal tourists who visit that they were lying about. Last I'd CNN aired new body can footage from the capital showing the moment when the insurrectionists attacked capital police officer, Michael for known at one point. You can hear him pleading with his attackers telling them that he has kids a warning. It is very difficult to work. yeah
yeah Oh my god, How are you why afterwards
you know: you're, not you It's too and I just wonder of congressmen Clyde if his constituents consider that a normal day, that's a normal day to them, just a peaceful I'm day and goes on, and fell on the congressmen saying that that was not what happened? You stop it did. think the american people are, but even war, so why can they just tell the truth and how does anything get down on capital hale if you have to work with p who stand up for a criminal act. Few toothache,
Don't have the words of the emotions to adequately respond to this because it such a lie. I, as you guys, know cause I've known you for much of his time. I've been covering converse. fears in the capital nearly every work day in that period, men was there. Any forty six. There was nothing about that day. That was anything remotely closed it to a regular day. No one perspective between the sanctions. I mean this itself I can't even put into words how ridiculous this stupid. Those comments are an unjust how how a logical and criminally stupid they are, as there are one or two to be blocked. These I'll, even marginal players in the has representatives. These are non factors. These people are back bans rank and file. Members that ninety percent
Ok, you know sixty percent of the Congress. They don't even pass them by Norway, don't even know their names. So, yes, they are members of Congress. They have a vote that makes them a potent, but they are not involved in any sort of legislating in any way, shape or form a but listen, I mean in part two. The circle this change was pushed out, because she was willing to speak what a lot of Republicans it. Frankly, what factually were uncovered the truth about January Sex and about the election and even republic I agree with her suggest that, it was distracting and although they agreed with her, they didn't want to bring it up and they didn't want. What about it on a regular basis so that the Republican Party and cabin though, right now and that's the party that is trying to you know in in the ten months wherever it is? Take back the majority for the first time since since losing again in twenty eight as one eighteen. So you know this is an Frank
we'll have to see meagre if these parties ever able to move on this, because they have given at least Cheney a beggar phone there given. This is dominating the front page of every major newspaper in America. Today so Republicans were trying to VON from shady. Instead, they haven't bold heard, given her megaphone Charlie. Maybe to my ask you to explain what was inside the heads or what remains inside the heads of those congressmen that we just watch their engaging in full truth, ISM about one SEC, that's the same as saying the planes didn't hit the buildings at nine eleven or whatever other conspiracy theory. We watched it happened on live TV, Jake was in the building. He watched. It happened his own eyes. What going on what is the rot at the centre of the Republican Party that allows people to think these things to a ass, these things and then to have leadership. Look either way when people say in an open rational hearing that what we all sat
happen on one six didn't happen that it was peaceful. There were just misfits. There were behind in an orderly fashion. tourist visit was one way it was described by congressmen, Anna Clyde, its dishonourable, its unpatriotic and it's just lies what is going on in the Republican Party well the word wrought iron that does not much is going on, but the reality is that those nobody will be rewarded for all of that that there will be no such sanctions for lying about. There's word this kind of revision as history and the term revision as history doesn't seem strong enough. I'm in feels like it feels like something northward. Ryan regime. Were you simply rewrite the history books and you white out certain people who have become politically incorrect, but the extent of the lie is extra Mary, especially because, as you pointed out, we were they
We saw those images are still so graphic. All you need to do is put them sign by side, so it's Certainly indication of how divorced from anyone, what a reality or our allegiance to the truth the Republican Party has become, but I think counting on as there are counting on the alternative realities, silos of the right wing MIDI ecosystem to either, ignore the lie or find a way rationalize it. Well, it wasn't so bad. This is called red, conning you simply rewrite the history. You pretend that what happened didn't happen put your own spin on it, but this is a forum for a party that has been devolve, yesterday really was extraordinary in so many respects. can only imagine what it will be like if Kevin Mccarthy and those guys take the majority next year,
Yes, I also think that loose change has humiliated these liars and it will be interesting, see what happens in the days and months to come and where she I support, because I do think there's lots of people and organisations who support the truth and belief. The constitution and she's betting on this country, and I think this- Just the beginning of something that is very frustrating to watch. This party go down in flames. Quite frankly, we need a strong republican party. Can or if it is real wise. We don't have that as meeting between President Biden and republican leaders, Kevin Mccarthy and Mitch Mcconnell, it was about the infrastructure bill. Republicans through their red line on taxes and in a campaign tax to supporters shortly after the meeting Mccarthy looked at raise money by saying quote: I just met with corrupt Joe Biden, and he still planning to
she's radical socialist agenda on the american people standing like Donald Trump in his language. That's his model. While compare that this tweet present I'd and put out after the meeting quote this morning. Vice president, Arrests and I met with a group of bipartisan, a bipartisan group of congressional leaders. As I've said before, we can't let the divisions of the present stop us from doing right by the future. We are committed to working together to build back better for the american people, Jonathan Le Maire, the White House, apparently taking the tactic of just staying away from the ugliness and the lies and doing what I can do with this party as a pretence to the legislation that they want passed, it is still an effort, but White House and the Democrats to come to some sort of by part of the agreement for at least a portion of his infrastructure, jobs and family planning. There's still hope, there's
deal perhaps can be reached even on the hard infrastructure part of it. The roads, bridges highways broadband things like that and other there's the family planning, which is more about childcare, healthcare, maybe Democrats, and that doing that on their own, himself came out as meaning. I was part of the press, fool that was in the room for the in the oval office for the first few minutes of it, he said it was encouraged. and what I asked he said, he It believes he can do it deal with Republicans, including leader, Mccarthy. Even though she has now back at least as far as I can, at least chase. If, of course, someone who also Jesse that she did not believe the election results were valid, but with the Republicans, by drawing this line, a red line and leader Mcconnell said afterwards outside the West Wing, may have also given the Democrats and licence to further go it alone that if, if to the Trump tax kind of twelve, seventeen is off the table them up. They say it is that perhaps makes it easy
for Democrats to sell to the moderates, the mansions Cinema, the senators with a white acid lobbying persistently making you're to sell them like look we're, try and that's a lot of what this is about right. There's the show the effort of bi partisanship, even if it does not lead to any GEO P votes. Now it is a poor the voters nowadays that what Americans want to see from their president, but by making a good faith effort, saying we're trying to bring reach across out to bring opponents on board that might reassure some more moderate Democrats will squeamish about doing this via reconciliation, which would be Democrats only to that hey. We have no other choice. We have to do this, but I think we should also just well on this as a final point that the striking contrast where these two parties worthy act rather mean by, as I said in courage, said he'd been in there and urge them to say we set aside of differences and do something big for the american people. That's why we're here Republicans very different Mccarthy that tweet you just reference, and indeed he came out of the.
The office minutes later said that there's no one still question legitimacy. The election we met with the president, which of course was the latest lie The latest insult that here, the Republicans or putting forth on the through the american people about the events in January six, in the former its claims about last year's election, Jonathan Le Maire. Still I had on morning Joe, the colonial pipeline hack has caused panic buying at gas stations across the EAST coast, energies secretary four grand home is urging drivers not to hoard gasoline she'll, be our guest this morning to give us an update on where things, stand. Bows is life and I'm just wondering what you would say if both called you today and said: hey how's it going I say more memory society every single time we talk about, political issue- look at me. I give you my word should ever remember home is homebase, who you are the one that I hope he's dead. your home base, sticking to it, something things are worth knows, no a This is long to die now to do things that I do, but no.
Mr President. Thank you very much for your time today. We really appreciate it always cast of course, Can she be suddenly anyone? I m haze Brown. You know these days so much news to wrap your head around is challenging to get a deeper understanding of things so every morning go beyond the headlines with MSNBC Daily. If features Britain perspectives from people, you know entrust enlightening articles bite from mainly many Hassan List Plank and Frank. The gipsy plus we'll get a fresh take every morning from me start your day with MSNBC daily at innocent BC. Dotcom think there's a place where we can find bi partisanship and it's what they are brought to. The president's. We first have to start with the definition of what is infrastructure you'll find any Republicans goggle raise taxes.
We're not interested in reopening the twenty seventeen Clarksville, we both my dad cleared the president. That's our red line, so Jake Sherman S pretty explicit. Therefore Mitch on Kevin Mccarthy that they don't want to move that corporate tax rate, which was seen by some as perhaps a place Joe Mansion included, where there could be room for another navigation. On this we can talk about the substance of the bill. Where there might be some wiggle room, but more broadly, as you take a step back, what does Joe Biden? What does the White House do with ache? Mccarthy who sits in the oval office for meeting in good faith meeting, whether or not it was theatrical is, the matter and then steps out and sends a fund raising taxing. I just met with corrupt Joe Biden, whose pushing his radical socialist agenda send me money within the next six hours we fund raising tax wrote. How do you have negotiations with that person gift,
the good Willie compartmentalizing and you know, listen the the quest to be fair and I'm not making excuses could be highlighted that last night, also in our evening newsletter It's ridiculous, it's crazy! But that's modern day political fundraising, you didn't press had done that it was probably Tita. That said, it's despicable, I mean I I didn't you can't have a negotiation with somebody who says something like that, but listen Joe Biden Gonna try and if you stepped back even further The larger question is for Joe, I guess: how much does he want bi partisanship right, because he has made the case time and time again that the court protect? in Greece is an imperative both politically and substantively, and people should be bang more money to the government corporation should be paying more the government, in fact, at the White House, spends a lot of time telling me and other reforms that it is popular and by the way, Republicans understand that raising the corporate tax rate is popular. There's still not gonna, do it so so
There are not sure of their space for a deal here, but the White House has to be really good departmentalized with the Republican Party by the way it's not anything close to resembling the Republican Party, obviously the job I knew in his time on capital here. This is a totally different species of Republican than has brought it up in the light later years. Obama administration that he was gonna, gills Mitch, Mikado and wisdom. The leadership, but the party is just so different for them you used to dealing with in his thirty five forty years, wash it today. No question about it? That's why all that talk about Joe Biden has deal maker in a bipartisan senator didn't really a bride of the current political climate. So Charlie Sykes makes this just gonna. reconciliation again by the way that assumes that get Joe Mansion on board and curse, and Cinema from Arizona will be some with a room with a corporate tax rate houses gonna play out and really is Joe by wasting his time at this point, trying to get Republicans on board-
not wasting his time, because there should be by partisan support for infrastructure. There are always has been, and by the way, I'm a little bit confused about this. I'm a unicorn, I'm a fiscal conservative, so easy Is it a liberal position or conservative position to pay for the spending on war? Supporting the the republican position appears to be yes, to spend lots of money, but we actually refuse to pay bore, but what I think he saw yesterday was- the fundamental dynamic is that the ear you they're not negotiating in good faith step out of the White House Meeting, and you have somebody put out a fund raising letter saying I just met with corrupt Joe Biden. I think that's a pretty good tell about whether or not you have any intention of cooperating or voting to give this president a win Orson over the country, a win in any way whatsoever yeah. You don't get to go through all of this union to challenge the rope
look around, you know. I remember it wasn't that long ago, right that the Donald Trump was in favour of infrastructure. This was an interesting nothing governing to do anything about it, but I don't I don't. I don't see much reason for optimism that these guys you're gonna deal in good faith, so Thank you, Charlie. Sykes, for being on Jonathan Le Maire, Joe Biden meets with Republicans again today trying to work on different issues that he's pushing forward for the country, this strategy? I think a lot of people underestimate Joe Biden that has been the story of his life, but his strategy of peace, of say of trying to understand these people who, at this point a lot of us have given up on. We can stand up for people who lie its. Possible, not to say something when their bold face leirus, and yet this president is finding his way to bridge the gap between democratic publicans and make an effort to meet with them on
legislation he's working on, I would predict that people under estimating Joe Biden strategy even right now that mere that think, that's right, Meeker first, I Jake's point is correct. Something very different republican then job. I knew what he was senator for sure, even vice president, eight or so years, go but there. Why does fishers? Who have some cautious optimism about today's? meaning centre capital who share the ranking republic in matters that struck infrastructure- other committee chairs are going to be here. This a group of organs who have put forth and offer enabled it showed a suggestion of bi partisanship. No granted the numbers are: there's a big gap between them, but Republicans are willing to pay what the White House wants. They're, not even close in terms of spending for infrastructure, but there there. Why has still believes there could be at least some sort of
ground that maybe they can on this with a little bit of momentum heading into what they have tabled so sore targeted soft deadline memorial day that which is now under three weeks away where they want to know by then roughly, if there would be an ability and an appetite, actual by partisan deal, as I said earlier, perhaps just on this part of it the through hard infrastructure and then do the other stuff by reconciliation. But it is indeed possible as much Joe Biden- wants to be by partisan and you're right make it. He has certainly proved in the past is able to do that. This is gonna, be an uphill climb that there is really very difficult together, any real GEO peace support. There's just no appetite there for much in terms of this, and certainly lots questions remain as to how to pay for so. This is about this about, though, showcasing an effort if bi partisanship, even if it doesn't leave me things but reassuring those moderate Democrats, it's about reassuring voters who might be nervous about the price tag say: look these
Things that are worth paying for this is going to reshape the american governments relationship with its citizens. We give it a shot. It will try what with the Republicans, but if not will go well in terms of the optics, while the Republicans are showing who they really are the ugly truth, Joe Biden, also showing who He is and using that as a backdrop, it's it's it's good politics for him. It will work. Some news now on the corona virus, the city: The advisory committee on immunization practices is recommending that is there a vaccine for children ages, twelve to fifteen in giving the final approval necessary for states to begin accepting that age group. It's a dialectical which is something we're talking a lot about on the show this week with a book were talking about dvd for Maize, its later on in the show, but the dialectical here is you can have regrets and at the same time, you also can have a lot to offer in this piece is terrific. Tell us
What is driving these women? Whether its Democrats or Republicans exactly so both Democrats begins. Have black women running in various races around the country already and two things kept coming up. One was sort of this idea of their lived experience being a political asset really for what feels like genuinely the first time to a lot of these folks and that's part because, as you know well and have covered while MECCA the country having a robust substantive conversation around systemic and systematic racism in a way that we just haven't before, and that goes to the highest levels, president by then, and Vice President Kamel Harris talk about those things to at length in so that makes black women on both sides of the aisles or to feel like there lived experiences as welcome in this country is a political asset in this time and the other thing that heard, is just watching events over the last four or five six years, many of these women who are actually running this cycle Mega told me that they had been asked to run last cycle in twenty. Twenty son had been
and twenty eighteen. They said. No, I didn't feel ready. I didn't feel ready now and twenty twenty two they feel ready say it's Willie so great to have on the show with us this morning, one of the most talented reporters in Washington back doing what you should be doing. So let let's talk about what's happening at the grass roots level at some of these candidates up into higher office. As you point out in the peace, there are no black women in the United. States sent another common Harris has ascended to the vice presidency, what's being done at the grass roots level to develop candidates whose doing it how successful do they think they can be in the short term, to move some of these candidates into prominent positions in the country you really and thank you for having me on this morning, get out. There were too many groups, dementia, and, if I were to do my due diligence and name all the bastards group, doing the work but one organism she called higher hides is one of the largest national political organisations for black women by black women. They really worked. It invests in black candidates, fine,
recruit them train them to run for office. But I talk to their president in C o over the weekend, Glinda car. She told me that they have a plan willing, not just for twenty twenty two, but through twenty thirty there are looking at that a ten year strategic plan to really build a pipeline of black female political candidates? Not just for you, a senator Congress, but up and down the ballot and are looking at folks and really work with that because, as I mentioned earlier, to make a lot of these women and women in general studies show, but black women in particular need a little more convincing to run for office than other traditional candidates. Have we seen in cycles past so that something that a lot of these organisations, on the ground, in addition to providing resources like how'd, he raises Water, inventive ways to hone fund razors. Can you run for office while being a working class ma? That's a question that a lot of candidates as that
They brought up to me that other organizations brought up to me that they heard from folks that's a big issue, so it's really kind of walking people through the personal side of what all this means and national side and giving them resources that it might have from the National Democratic Party fail at sea itself, America to see, welcome back are you obviously highlights what a growing force democratic were black women. Are the democratic party, but a lot was made out of the exit polls and twenty twenty that showed that then President Trump Hudson strength showed some gains amongst and latino voters, but also black men in her report, We are trying to sort of a move to try to further that we're trying to see if that something that was you Nick Chopper, whether that can be seventy becomes more stable. The robber the Party walkest her that dynamic. What are you? What does your reporting tell you about what we saw from twenty twenty and how they could play go out for us
and I've been so good to see. You too, I remember, reporting for actions in the beginning of the twenty twenty democratic primary when there was this moment, as I am sure you all remember- from covering yet where democratic primary presidential its were. Really laser focused on trying to court blackmail, voters. It was a clear shift from the democratic parties previous focused black women, as Nick mentioned at the top of the show that they are often referred to as the backbone of the Democratic Party, but black men are not talked about in the same way and there been some tension. That's come up not just with voters bows votes in the party to as they're trying to figure out how to make the courting more equitable and equal But also how to really talk to black men in a way that is, you just mentioned, Jonathan former President Donald Trump resonated in various ways in the last election, one thing that I've been hurt hearing from democratic strategists outside of just
story. Is that Democrats really want to focus on a more populist message? Take these policies that their pushing narrow it down to a populist message that appeals they say to everyone across the country, but really to black folks and black men in particular, and I think that something to watch out for Alexey our some of these candidates, especially the Democrats. The minority candidates, using the big lie in Washington. What's going on Washington with the whole Trump wing of the Republican Party, which appears to be alone the Republican Party, Are they using that at all, in their strategies. Is it dry or earlier this week actually it was announced that the congressional Hispanic Caucasus, which is mostly Democrats, was my yahoo. They send out, adds targeting for Republican, and heavily latino districts to vote. To overturn the results of the elections so they're really working to hold these Republicans accountable, who pushed the so called big lie
I am really using race to their advantage, sort of targeting those latino districts as latino member sang. Look, your representative not only doesn't represent you and your lived experience, but they also are fighting against democracy. So there are a number of ads that are coming out from this huge, these political arm that will be targeted. Republicans in that way all right. Nice work, Alexey, Mccammon! Thank you.
