Who are you really excited to talk to you? Somebody who's created
shown series of shows about true crime, specifically where you you get to spend more
Then just one episode talking about a case where you get to delve into every single asked
and you know what your show up in vanished
season one man, the terror Grinstead CASE
wondering if anybody hasn't listen to this. Yet who is listening to the show right now? Can you give everyone just kind of a brief overview of that case yet or so
one open vanished covered a missing persons in South Georgia is emitting de queen and hyper teacher named terror Grinstead. It was over
Ten years cold and there were no less
anymore and people pretty much to stop talking about it and South Georgia, and I came round him and made a pot cats are disappearance and assorted, urging people in the town and in about six months into the pockets about halfway through there were the major breakin the case and a kick came forth to law enforcement, which prompted the research this the con orchard and they made to arrests for tariff is order so it with a huge story, and it deserves goodbye person involved with car like this sort of arm.
Part of the town that people do not want any more at all, they were afraid to mention people names over the years over a decade. People of point
here that each other in the account is given up on an idea. You know ever really finding out what happened to Syria with such a big mystery, but about six months into the pike after the major break in the case, and that people will be especially followed
these aspects and their friends and interviewed everybody and actually read that we are the ones we accuse Ryan, Duke hired a new attorney and in the next six months or so there should be a trial, interprets this how man loud
I mean that's powerful stuff too, and this is something that a lot of the folks nor audience today are definitely wondering when, when they hear about the story about the investigation that
who conducted under your own power at especially at first there are several of the people. Listen now
are probably aspiring keyboard sleuths right to use, use the phrase they think you came up with Matt, so we'd like to ask on their behalf about the process. How did you begin
making these connections in tracking down the this info
nation that in some cases it sounds like people did not want you to find. I mean really difficult with it. The same way you could figure
are you around. If you ve ever been on red it or the oven, dance discussion board different websites like webs blues. If all the same, thank you try to find people names. You finer contact information after you state look alike,
because you can t their faces and you can verify that after they aren t there their and so
I'll. Do that usually does just with my own real paper profile to know if I'm reaching out to a stranger, I'm saying hey look here
pictures of me and my family, Admiral Earthen, I'm not just some cat. This almost no are you know it could be got things sometimes
you can go to read all that you just completely just nothing and another for several times. Admittedly, but I think you have to do that
to find the truth. Sometimes you don't know that until you read the bottom of that,
you realize oh ok, well, there's nothing here, or this is just all wrong. That's kind of like this enhances of
one of the convention and Waterways dinner. I was, I basically started with the two or three persons of interest that our law enforcement had unofficially announced to the media, in that everyone a covered over the years in exploring all of these people and their friends and everything else extensively, and then it didn't go anywhere. Things were weirded suspicious, but there was nothing concrete
notably made sense and then you're, not out of the blue. There was a chip, it came forward and it was two guys know ever heard up two former students, so you know there's a lot to be learned from my first go around and I adept in applying a lot of that even to an dumb
how different cases conflict in different ways. I most certainly is
and I want to get into that in just a second thing. I just want to stick on season one just as there
couple
what's in here in Manila, wanting just explore with you. So you know you're talking about just giving your facebook out to ran
people that you don't know you don't know how their involved necessarily in the case, at least behind closed doors right, but you're put yourself out.
Doing that, and this
the small town where people know each other
where there is a real threat of some kind of, perhaps retaliation from either a person or group of people that actually carried out this murder leg
what kind of security measures did you end up getting in place when you're walking around that town on foot when you're talking to people, maybe in their Hauser at a public place like? How do you protect yourself it? Why don't you get it at first? I didn't really hate you.
You might say tat my blinders on and I was just being almost foolishly fearless about it
just didn't really you think too much about my own safety. I was too determined to figure out what was going on and most of the time it was from the cover of my own home. If I was on my computer
phone calls. But when I went down there I deadly took more precautions, and I didn't really, you know, make a whole bunch of noise and I was there. It really was until the very end of it.
Even after the erected a maid, and I was interviewing different friends of its aspects that I felt really uncomfortable down in a cellar Georgia for the first time- and it was at that point that I realize ok, I'm not coming down here again alone, one and I'm gonna have a completely different game plan. Whenever I come back here, and so I have some I've been
back to build new start for the tv show that we have in the works and that this around we actually had security with us and they were outside
door, the whole night they were seen. It said the sable tells us we did so. We actually hiring security pen
left over there and by the way that is the. I think it's been announced enough now that we can say that spin, it's going to be
with oxygen right, yet the threat to look for the up and vanish tv show on oxygen. Everybody guess yet
and let us let us, though I think about it, because it's no secret that here at stuff they want you to know,
also excited. I can't wait to see, can't wait to see how it all turns out and how the puzzle pieces match together. Oh when we're talking about security, naturally we begin to wonder about law enforcement right, especially in this situation that occurs in up and vanished,
season wine and for everyone whose listening there there may be spoiler territory here. But one of the questions we have to ask is
given that the relationship between law enforcement and journalists can be such a complicated thing did. Did you feel any support, or did you
Lenny, I guess on the other extreme animosity from local authorities when you were poking around initially in this case, will it first in CARE Griffith case adverse local law enforcement. You fill up with the permit was free welcoming to me
They wanted a k thought too and there they simply round leads anyone who is gonna, go out on a limb and try fall this in pieces
gathered on their own. They supported that so an effort through it was on their pretty cooperative. Now the gb I the door to Burma estimation they never really talk to me in the beginning and from what I've heard
would like them. It's still an active case in their eyes. It was a an active investigation, so they didn't want to divulge any details about the case or really comment on it too much, but really halfway through the series is when things started to change once there was to arrest in the case it just got real again. It went from being a cool case to a murder case with two suspects that have been arrested, and so
with that. Come all these new rumours about these people and almost alive investigation again, and so from that point board. Really, no law enforcement wanted to talk to me at all, and you really, if you listen to the entire theories, thereby single interview with a police officer there would support
None else could afford to imagine that now, but on better way was wow,
you died, so you did have assistance, there mean their summer.
Voices on the show you had assistance from investigators and some other people that came through and ended up, assisting you in some way right? I wouldn't I wouldn't call them
They were. They were supportive of the pot and someone telling terrorist story on a major platform, but they weren't giving.
Meet tips or pointy me in a direction. They say they feared very clear of that and related. It seem like after the arrest they didn't want to touch the
cast at all. So in your other interviewing folks, and I'm sure you wanna travel latency can be kind of like you know
nimble in getting around and getting as much energy can, what kind of equipment do use when you're out in the field, recording interviews and chastened down leaves which what's your kit, my kid is my macbook pro and all my file think on dropbox in for the team to share, and I use latest round with a zoo made
and either a shot gun MIKE attached to it or I'm running, I guess Herblay short ECHO are able to have a better astounding MIKE and then someone usually holding that, but I like to have one eight six with an on board MIKE on it at all times
Kate, I'm all the sudden talking to someone. You telling me something very important I reckon,
report on my phone, so I get some decent audio from and on more microphone with these you made six, but that's that's pretty much. It is preferable. That's awesome,
actually pretty affordable, and there are some other versions of that zoom that you can gather even cheaper if you're thinking about start,
your own thing. Listening out there or you know, checking it out, you can you can affordably get some stuff to make a pretty cool show
and will return to this story. After a word from our sponsor.

while we're talking about inspiration, let's take a
Let's go a little bit further down the rabbit hold, because as long time, listeners no pain you and tender for tv did not just create up in vanished. You also have created Atlanta monster along with her
behind the scenes. Collaboration with our very own Matt, Frederick,
and been born and Paul jacket?
Well, it's a teamwork makes the dream work, but the reason this goes to a question of inspiration is unsure of many people.
Curious to learn what originally inspired you and you
Donald in your team, at tenderfoot to investigate the story of weighing Williams, yet definitely Billy with it would my bit Donald who brought mainly to my attention it. I never heard of
a child murders report. It happened in early eighties and I just for diving into the story and looking into it and just take me back at that time period and sing out differently. Lana was I default so many reasons to tell this story the on the question of whether or not wane limbs within and are guilty. I thought for paying a picture of a time period that was in some way forgotten that shouldn't be. If I know about you, Aunt Shaw murders that met. There is probably thousands hundreds of thousands of people who also did know about the charters, and it turns out that was correct. I did folder so much to explore their at. I thought of the race poor. They seemed extremely relevant today at the beginning, extract some sort of positive silver lining message. For me,
In some way, though difficult I've got that we did that, I just thought it was in some way the history lesson for people and even for myself in this way, but I was so cool because, as I was driving through, all the wood or guys and just energy needs people being taken back to a time steered. I wouldn't part of seeing how different it was. Like. I opened my mind a little bit for the lotteries and why I chose to to tell the story the amounts
murdered and they were all about Williams. Just for anybody who hasn't listened. Yet he did.
You ve. Can you give us an overview Atlantic elvers get his? You mean you
If you do a little butter, I mean I haven't heard any it. You have to listen to a labour market are usually Breton pause right now. It's true so aware more through
bout, even farmers that occurred in the eighties.
The man in prison for some of the murdered, his name is lame billion, and for the past several decades, a lot of people
question whether or not we Williams is the right guy in today, and twenty in eighteen still says: I'm not the guy, I didn't kill anybody who always a bunch of conspiracies around this case. Allow different advocates either for or against way millions in a lot of unsolved murders of these children either way. How do you slighted? There was upwards of twenty eight thirty, two kids on this list of children
You were murdered in Atlanta in that time period and only about half of them were blamed on Williams and what it wouldn't leave with. Basically is a bunch of unsolved murders of children and filter it away there with us
whose injustice done whether wailings, what they feel pillar or not. So we firstly explored that and not to give you much away, but during the pike ass we may contact between lambs in prison and he gives it is take on everything and he still pending his innocence, but as he gives us new information that is supposed to
prove his innocence, we gotta go back through that dissected and find out whether or not it will get on it and it's complicated, but it would take looking to the whole series to get a big it to get the bigger picture. So you you did talk to me,
Williams, I didn't know you. Perhaps you dont have to you know how to answer this pain, but I'm just gonna ask it: how does one talk to convicted, possibly serial killer in prison,
Oh, my. I don't know how I did that I found it pretty difficult just because I had this would have put on his sword. A persona wanted to hear everything he had to say and I wanted to gain its trust. I did want to hear about I wanted to hear he told me he had proved that you would benefit so I wanted to hear it. I was gonna, give him the benefit of my own doubt and
your mouth, but over time AEGIS, became really difficult because he would call me at random hours from different numbers in prison, and we would just talk for long periods of time about the same exact things and for realising that he wasn't really calling needs to tell me he was innocent or for me to get him out of prison. He was evidently seem to concern about that. He really just wanted a spotlight
wanted to you wanted somebody pop you like myself, and it wasn't me with somebody else and though over
I'm it became harder to talk to him and my patients levels admittedly decreased. My patient with Britain was locked, thereby
and I had a pathway, the pathway Williams, to hit Donald for a little bit because we were building the pie, Gaston or called work very constructive. They were just sort of rehashing things. Didn't we make sense
and so the kind of the steering wheel and in
he's somewhere at all anywhere of the cliff again with paint difficult, but are we learn best to extract as much information legitimate information as possible? Whether or not that was true? You know it's a big thing just for some more background information here,
just paying you're talking about just how little time you actually had when we're in production of this. So there was a production team on the house of works in that.
Engineer. You know, engineer and work on the chosen at it to some extent, but most of
breathing was added, at least in the major first pass by you by pain himself. As he's also, I going on recording everything in doing interviews and stuff, so yeah tie
was of the essence, and I can't imagine getting stuck on the phone for like two hours at a time, ire and crunch,
and even the hassle of going
the bureaucratic steps necessary to gain access right here I convicted or Ellen,
so. We were your calls monitored as well. Surely they were right, get let s call. It came from the prison itself, it always maturity in it. A little white, the compliance protocol start that lets. You know for sure that its debt media reported-
and we in these in these conversations, knew you
you hit on the fact that there was at times this feeling of talking to a broken record or hearing record on repeat. But one thing that far
needs me in this story is something that you mentioned at the very top we're talking about this, that you found stories and threads. That did not
not necessarily have a direct relationship with it
Williams. I could you tell us
maybe one or two aspects of this journey that surprised you as you Doug further into
the investigation I get the right to private reported to me was just how severe the injustice was. Somebody families talking to tell it myself and disappearing near stories in person really changed. My entire perspective of the Atlantic Farmers and Williams in what the true injustice was here, so that that threat alone, with the biggest just sort of seeing
all these children's murder cases essentially being swept under the rug and the FBI and the Atlanta Police
honing in William and wanting to go away so badly and for reasons that are just about catching a killer regions that are about preserving the cities in a way the city Wilson,
the newcomers into Elinor was with on the rise, and people in power saw this as
We need to go away and you need to go way back and saw with
entirely. Came this sort of arm sweeping under the rug with these cases, and so what happened? Is you talk to these families and almost all of them will tell you that they all think Williams and, in my opinion, I don't think that that's because women didn't necessarily killed there. There followed a daughter, I think it's because they wouldn't it was never proven to them. Otherwise, no one ever proved to these families. That way
you killed their child in that the biggest part of this whole whole mystery. For me is, though, over the years decades in decades is perpetuated. This idea of conspiracies and with the kick a cannibal, all the other different threads does come to light because it was never proven to them.
It was when lambs, even if it was we millions, they would still tell you otherwise, because over the years worth of big developed, this sort of way of thinking about it, and this is all, but that was the biggest threat that I wanted to explore outside his wasteland himself, a sword, the impact on the families. In the way people have received this generation,
Our people felt that way about it. Another going this way about it being the then and now in Kiev, exploring all the different people that were affected by this in their views on it to me with joy, just the core of the park, ass dude, so ok, I've! This is
a personal question making a show like of Vintage Orlando monster. It requires a certain amount of obsession. I think you would agree with that. Just to get it right. Have you found that that,
has any psychological effects in a wailing makes you think about the world differently or gorgeous shapes set? Your vision
in some way in the real world where you're walking around. If you ve got all this dark stuff just kind of looming in the back of your head, yeah any debt, we had an effect on. You create dark, subject matter and I try to focus too much on the dark parts of it are not the kind of person who want to take the story of a murder and
first punctually, all the glory details of it. That is not something that I never interested in. I more interested in interviewing the people surrounding this event or this unsolved mystery in sort of diving into the hundreds of people that it affects, or even in the thousands on. So I tried to like keep my focus on things that are the darkest elements of these stories, but regardless at the core of it. Is this really sad and disturbing story? Whether the missing persons case or
do you sell murders, is so deftly had an effect on me like, but I do my best suited to now and not let that affect my dear day life and also not affect the way I tell the story is really really easy, especially if you're becoming obsessed over a murder case or a story like death did to describe lose all sight of. What's what the reality is, you know what's really going on, it's easy to get lost in it, and then you could come up with an episode of sounds crazy to people. So I have a cat check myself at all times and in keep a certain amount of distance, even on plodding myself right in the middle of the things, I still have a certain amount of distant like it
and that, for my own safety amount, daddy, really sanity really and a better, more objective. True story, so does Wayne Williams ever like see the occasional tax or anything
anymore. I think you get yourself and got snatched up good arm. I've never got them phone call
from prison that I believe are Wayne. Having listened to the boys smells good arm. I think if I were millions but really since the pockets, I haven't really been talking to him at all. I think that if I were to reach out to him and one thought him again, he would totally do it without a doubt. In at the drop of a hat, you would have on the phone and beyond any of my bike ass, I would think everything could break and then I'll be right back pay, I'm Andy.
If you don't know me, it's probably because I'm not famous, but I did start immense grooming company called Harry's. The idea for Harry's came out of a frustrating experience. Oven, vanish season to which just came out August twentieth is when it was first, the first episode came out. I've listened to it. I hope you out. There have also listened to it, so it focuses on
disappearance of crystal and is a recent rising. Her reasoner writing right here, and so
let's just get into exactly how this case is different from season.
Terror Grinstead CASE,
similarities and differences between at one and between them, one and even to the main differences are well. I do one with a small town right. It was a silver
Georgia South Georgia County middle of nowhere off the highway, a few thousand residents pretty small. In this case we are even more remote. We are three and a half, almost four hours southwest of Denver and the closest
store, really that's a walmart or no a chain restaurant
is overrun, our drive away from here and this power only had a hundred fifty residents. Now, there's people outside the town, this area called the backup dad about a thousand or so more, but in the town, proper crept down where this missing persons case is said, it's a very tiny place and is also a very unique place.
This is a place full of over fifteen different spiritual centres is a very odd holy place. The tracks different procedure, then people seeking enlightenment. We have all the kind of interesting people here in its relate the reason the crystal came here was for all the positive energy here and all the different ways of life better have clashing here together and working together as one and that drove a lot of people from all over the world here, and why found is that, even though the very holy place, a berries,
who plays in the mountains at eight thousand feet. Elevation! It's a beautiful place, even though, with all these three things is not immune to evil. Just like everywhere else in the world
in December in Atlanta, any big city, there are bad people there and just because this is a holy place in a special place. Unfortunately, it seemed like is not immune to bad people and that works boy. Now give what happened. The crystal we don't know cripple family too.
No, what we did not know until we're here ingress. Actually here now on this pretty bad wifi talking, you guys put up we're here to find out anyone tell the pistols door be immemorial. I've heard and introduce a different, unique person.
To the world. In other words, I do so you go beyond just dinner, worrying about people wanting to murder. You in your sleep, I'm out where you are in this very area, there's things you have to
re about like you now hostile wildlife. What's what's that like so apparently the wildlife here is extremely abundant. I mean it
I'm right now, I'm looking out the window and I just see huge mountain top better. Just a few hundred yards away from me,
surrounded by mountains. We, the people or the smaller population here
There are more animals here than there are people in a jiffy extremely fast place, our talking to one local named David. You tell me a story about his friends who, in it we can cover this. Never so to one of his friends a bare broke into her car, because you are putting your car and somehow the beard, but will the door and hop inside and then the door, clothes and then lock in so she climbed up next morning if he finds literally a raging
here in the inside of her car it's a month ago, and there, with a big broom and put the door open in the beer, runs off and does not. Lions here does warmed all kind of animals that are really in your face here in so obviously with with the terrain and the wild life here like it is one possibility, because we don't know what happened
If we go into the white hiking in here,
the camera, with an animal which he had an accident somewhere. There are tons of cliffs here this mindset here the bunch of unexplored territory that just off the greed that will be very difficult to find. Someone in if you needed help, show this kind, the possibility that it is not just that
idea of there being back people here or something which are everywhere then offer this element of
being in the wild, and it's very real here. It's it's also intriguing
that you mention being in the wild and living and off the grid sort of life here because of from we. What we understand aspects of this case may touch on
something we ve talked about in the past on the show the Rainbow gatherings this intentional recurring can
unity wherein people, I guess only trade or give things to each other, also
place candidly earn environment candidly known for a being very open and welcoming to certain types of drugs. There are tons.
A group like that here, the rainbow gathering is just one of them that comes through every now, and then there are countless different groups and religious groups and spiritual thinner than different belief,
you may even refer to some of them at the colts who's, all kinds of different groups here and they're kind of clashing, and it's a melting pot of the best of the best and the worst of the worst, and it just opens so many different possibilities to wear crystal may have gone. Or what may
happened to her and so inevitably to we do cover the rainbow gathering briefly, because I talking to the share of the poor, my ear
the early rumours was that. So my daddy her getting this Cora with a group of people
and they were going to the rainbow gathering they restock
rainbow gathering, no one thing crystal and it cannot be ruled out. Personally, I don't be, she went there. I think something else happened to her, but the possibility is still there and if not the rainbow gathering, maybe something else. There are tons of groups of people here who do we're stuff and not all of it is bad, but some of it include drugs in sport, a rubber lifestyle that
potentially put someone in danger, and so there's so much to explore with the different types of people here and what they believe in what they do. And you know what crystal is what's crystal associated with them. You know we don't know, but that's one of the avenues, the worst flooring
You know there's! This is completely off topic word also in episode to use
to someone named canvas and canvas. Can this is part of this thing? That's called the? U S or watch tower, that's out there in a valley somewhere. Can you tell us a little bit about that? Oh yeah, it's funny. I was actually at the EU if a watch tower yesterday and talking to the utterly who work there is very nice
when an Huey but yourself at a town on the main highway thither. I, U Upper, watch tower, which is literally exactly what you think it is. It's a watch tower where you go and look for you of those in the sky and beyond, just being platform weaken habit, but simply unadulterated. You of the sky, it
though a place dad according to them is very whole Lee in their different portals here and all tat sort of magical stuff happens there right. So your first inclination is a war minded believe yeah right. You know, I believe in you abode. I've seen you oppose one for my life. I think a third that point odd things happening in the sky
sometimes that even explain but a problem on port old and this being some of their machine that there, the spacecraft buried under this place- and they found kind
You know untrue to meet your only skeptical of birth and then she said well, pull out your blog, your phone and open your pompous up, ok in store for walking around, and she said that way. You pointed left. That's north and then on my pop is to the far right. It said north that are walking around
in my carpet, literally with jumping around like crazy. You didn't know where we were what was going on in everyone's Bob with doing it. So what
augmented thing it like a satellite thing or something but was maybe it's difficult residents, but for whatever reason, if you pull a cop is out
in this place. It doesn't know where your what's going on or something is interfering with it. So after I thought I happened with my own eyes yesterday
I opened. My eyes are below the more in Canada
nope, I believe everything, but I am open to it. People have a bunch of different beliefs here and it's not my job to tell them it's true or untrue. I'd want to learn more about it and I think some of my own eyes that was wonderful, but that that would have made places that are extremely unique and dumb really worth checking out and achieve famous side. No. This is why we were there yesterday evening.
More audio with the owner. It was just us there in a corporal up with two people in it. It was a husband and wife and they pull me side said hey. Do you make a pike ass like yeah? I do, they said, is up and vanished ass, a yes creeping gets needs a blessed so crazy because, as we are blowing up, we just finished episode to like this is absolutely insane right now. So I guess people are as interested in question as I am, and if not all bad, if there's a lot of people here, one of its think people here and what the word here but yeah, but those so strange that the only run in I had its day was with a listener who had just heard on the packet
Candide telling the story about you about this guy. Then I overhear them ever leaving candid tying them the faint for that they heard the placards just a few months earlier than some awesome. Acrid aren't you
there's one words connection, then we have to ask you about, and that is this little net,
its documentary called while wild country and the russian each movement is theirs.
What is the connection between that group of people and Cristo? So I was in a deeper interview. I was talking about a guy who will emerge later on the theories and he's one of the people who attend the drum circles. Very nice guy, very eclectic Harry everything back.
His life story assists would blow your mind, but, as we were in there in his hobby shape how he called it a hobby, how it looks like it's real lord of the rings. Ah me built himself were in this Hobbit House of his and I'd be a picture of rock nation on the wall, and so one above our producers asked them about it, and he says that he was a part of that group. He was there and then after you left there, he came to crept down and been here ever set like an unbelievable, and I just finished some well a country which is amazing. You should check it out, you have it, but that's just give you a little insight to the kind of people that are here is the same kind of people. It's a bunch of the different
and everyone is very convicted about it, but they all work together and Unasyn, and it's pretty bizarre to see, but just everyone here has their own story. You do not end up in Crestone. Kristal is at the very end of the road. It you not end up here on accident, so everyone came here for a reason. So the more people you talk to the more
twenty five, because everyone at the back door- and we started here in the early episodes of the new season, about one of the reasons people might have ended up there, which is the kind of somewhat booming two minor sending drug scene and crystal supposedly possibly handsome involvement in that world. Is there anything that you can tell us about what might be coming next to some kind of teaser? Don't want any spoilers, but this is fast
stuff, yeah, so a very spiritual place over the years it has attracted sort of a drug culture advocates in someone's, been perpetuated.
By the legalization of air Wanna hear persuade marijuana, youth death toll divine, that's gonna be built amazed at me, video anywhere and its extremely legal here, no one even things for talk about it, there's a weed stores everywhere here, but think that being so remote it is not very police here, there's not a lot of police presence here, and so I think what happened over
I'm it. What does Europe virtuous Prop one kid people, kids, that are in their midst, one he's late, thirty to have money,
work and is come out here and live on red in for a kid. You know
your round town and cause disruptions and just living wild out here in being gravy, and there has been over the earth ass couple years through the more and more people like this, and so what were thinking is that at some,
point: a long journey eurocrat down. She had a running what these people and got closer with them, and something in this friend circle may have happened, and so has the serious goes on
when we start kind of in on who, and what are we looking for here? Who d cripple no here? That knows where he is because we are very confident that someone here knows where crystal is:
and the question is: why are they say nothing about it and it is a murder case. Dude, ok,
what are you so now? I'm in a man like that, a justice indices into today's mercy. The episodes in
