One day in 1967, Sweden changed what side of the road its citizens drive on. It went surprisingly well, considering.

In a guarded meta everybody and welcome to the short stuff it's Josh and chalk and theirs. Area over there, some out there in the ether right. I hope So- and this is this is stuff you should know short stuff we should probably stop horsing around yeah. So I don't know why said in a gotta dvd assuming that Sweden, no, I think it's a pig, lanyard gibberish, really yes in the garden of Eden, but for some reason he said in a guarded ovida. Why did you say for the ship has just for fun? It's a pleasant things here. Don't you think I thought I was an Easter egg? No now, and now it's too totally ruined. Well, we are talking about a pretty interesting thing that you tease out on an absurd we did recently and one that is from an episode. Wealth is not from
pursued. But there is also a ninety nine percent invisible episode about this. Yet there is, if you hear a better version. Soon into the roman women, as is being just about every way, but will try our best right agreed. So we're talking about today is called Dogging h and dog in age is swedish for our day or right day h, the age stands for hooker, which is the swedish word for right, and what the whole thing was really talking about. Was thing called man, hooker traffic com logged in gin, nice, I don't know of Nice- is the right word, but sure thank you and what that means is the right hand, traffic diversion and ultimately, what all of this of these words and boom lots of piled together mean is that this is the day dogging H
September. Third, one thousand nine hundred and sixty seven in Sweden said were no longer driving on the left hand of the road like we have been since one thousand seven hundred and thirty four we're all of a sudden on one day going to switch over to the right That's right- and I think, did you mention when they how long they had been driving on the other side. Yes, is seventeen thirty for too long time do what you're You do is there's a couple of factors here. You ve gotta teach people how to do this literally, so they put together a pamphlet that literally told you how to do it, and then you got it it's an infrastructure projects, supposedly the largest driving related infrastructure project ever under again by any country. A really knows. Definitely Sweden's largest infrastructure project. That day it was the largest fruit for any country. As far as traffic such related largest traffic related infrastructure,
guess what I just said. Ok, I just couldn't believe my ears chuck, but yet yes, oh yeah, there's a infrastructures say section of it and then there's the public information campaign paint in it was a lot more than just like a pamphlet. Pamphlets were step like one dot, you know, oh, would go with indicating that there's plenty other steps about that and when some other things they did was TB, AIDS Radiohead Newspaper ads. They came up with a logo for dog and age that was everywhere. They had a song contest to pick us a theme song for dog and age, and they came up with a good. What should you listen to? It gives good of you, oh yeah yeah. It was called while the american translation is keep to the right Svensson I those by the teller stars- and it was like you said, selected by a vote. It actually reach,
number five on their their charts, whatever the swedish charts are, and there was also a weird little sly side, meaning because apparently keeping it to the right means to be faithful to your significant other. As opposed to cheating on some, which is go and left Owen heard that before their wild chuck for some that's a deep cut right. There is fairly deep so then the name of the song in Swedish is how dig till Hooker Svensson and down. I listen to it enough that I could have sung it by enough time has elapsed since I've heard it on. Can you say what have been great? No do you think we ve talked about it enough to Lay it at any point or too we have to do, is tell people go. Look it up on you too, No, I mean: let's could we play like it version where we will get sued find out in the ETA that I was play little right now here is hauled dig till Hugger Svensson by the
the stars bottom, it's just a bad about his catches. Is it Yes, I'm surprised. It only rose to number five and the HEAT Parade yeah here. Thing with hd, though no every municipality, had to deal with their own issues. They had to change me when you think about it. It's not just about educating the public that pamphlet that pamphlet I mentioned. I want to make it clear that was not just like hey here's or do it is here, is how to drive on the other side of the road. I got two here and there you ve got street signs that bus stops and you get traffic lights You got bicycle lanes. You got one way street. You got buses that have doors on one side of it
goal that now need doors and the other side by was huge yeah. What is one of the other things too? Was the Swedes Sidney? They want to do that there is not at all. There is a referendum that have been held ten years before when they started thinking about doing this and like eighty three percent of swedish voters said no yeah, they did not want to start driving on the right hand, side of the room, and the governments are well we're doing it anyway, and the reason why they wanted to do this in the first place was because Sweden was cut lagging behind the rest of Europe, which had served to increasingly rest of the world. I should say which has started to increasingly drive on the right hand, side of the road, and so there was one thing: Sweden didn't wanna look backwards or anything like that. But then the other thing is that they, the government, was like this may cause fewer fatalities, because, while we drive on the left side of the road we're buying cars and clean volvos that are design, to be driven on the right hand, side of the road, so you're driving at
I can see the road on the left side of your car, which means you're just gonna, looking down into this little, ditch next to you without coming traffic, which seems it seems reasonable that they thought this was a danger situation yet you know I never really considered that cause. I didn't wonder what Big deal was my only experience I think have said before was when we? on the australian tour. I drove opposite side and right here. Sides steering wheel wizen, but now that I think about it? I guess would be a little weird to be opposite side with the regular set up right, yeah
it would be a little weird, like you'd, be really far removed from China, where you need to be paying the most attention, I think, is the thing an end and they they ultimately did show a decline in traffic accidents and fatalities because of dogging age, but if they think it was because people are just pay more attention getting used to driving on the right hand, side, because within two years of went back up to about normal yeah think people extra cautious. Great yeah, here's the thing that when you do something like this, it's not like little by little over the course of a month, you can start changing street signs, because that would be chaos right so the night before and the day before they had to shut down. Basically, almost all traffic you of special permission, stab car on the road at all right and they had to change three hundred and sixty thousand street signs dry in less than twenty four hours where they successful will. Let you know right after this message break

I can't stand the tension any longer where they successful in changing three hundred and sixty thousand street signs all across Sweden in one single night. While I want to say for sure my gut says they may have Miss one,
to say, but over over overall, they were very successful at four fifty in the M on September third, nineteen sixty seven bunch bunch people came out to war. There were cars on the road and they said, stop go to the other side and directed people the other side and said I have a blast everyone Yeah, there's like a countdown on the radio. As the announcement after after they reached one that Sweden now drives on the right hand, side of the road and everybody concert driving and I'm sure there like wobbling and weaving and kind of like little kids on a bike with training closer after having the training I was taken off, I should say I'll bet. It was adorable to see, but there were the next day that was a Sunday at like five, a dot m when they started and the next, the next business day Monday.
There were no fatalities. Nobody died nearer like a hundred and fifty seven corrects, which is slightly lower than a normal Monday in Sweden. And it was not cheap either. Obviously this gonna cost a ton of money at the time it costs six hundred and twenty eight million kroner, which, with its astronomical, Yeah it's about three hundred and sixteen million american dollars today, but about five percent more in the government's estimated budget, which is not a bad over no, not at all, and if you read some of the articles on it, we used in addition to a couple others this one BBC article about it. That was super interesting. They pointed out some of the people who were there and took part in this point like dude you that was ridiculously cheap even further time for them. This the massive scale of this, not just the infrastructure again, but also that all of the public information campaigns to think they did
for cheap, and they did it really quickly, yeah it's! It was quite a project, my hat as after them for doing it by all accounts like pretty successfully yeah. They they did it and they said that's great but then, like I said, traffic fatalities went back up Ashura couple years when people got used to it, and so Sweden undertook a project starting. Ninety nine b, seven that that said, were we don't want any traffic fatalities diameter? What side of the road we drive on in our countries too? They came with the program called vision, zero and they just been slowly but surely trying to whittled down the number of traffic fatalities and in two thousand sixteen it was down to two hundred and seventy two. Seventy that's a minuscule about for a country, the size of Sweden for an entire year. So who knows a fellow forget, the zero but hats off to them for also for for trying to do that
yeah and for digging up tell a star to cut the hits on vision. Zero right, they literally had to dig one of the members of a man. The nails, except to recommend the ninety nine percent. Invisible episode because they do their show little differently, so they got some cool interviews with people that were there at the time, and now it's always in a little more dressed up. Then I shall feel- and by that I mean way more dressed up agreed. They do a very well over there, so that's it for a short stuff go head on over the nine percent invisible, and we will see you next time you Stop you should know, is the production of I radios how stuff works for more podcast, my heart radio? I hurt radio applicable wherever you listen to your favorite ships.
