you're giving acceptance speech for four Besta election podcast up his height we're not gonna wind. Yes, it is swing states which are all the rage battleground states these days, thereby loves him in, been for a while. But some of this stuff was even enlightened me and I thought I can do most of the stuff yeah it's one of those I found that can make a lot more difficult than it actually is and was just the general concept of swing states, but there's a lot of detail and info in history to it. That makes the whole thing really interesting. So, to keep from making the whole thing more difficult than it is: let's just define swing states at the outset and get good swing. State
states during presidential elections in the United States. Here that are so closely divided politically that they could go either way, they could vote one way or the other and based on a lot of them you know governmental ins and outs that will go over who, depending on which way they they they flip, they could make or break a presidential campaign and elect the president or deny somebody else, the presidency at the same time, even they can do, but that's right and I'm glad he said that, because more than anything else in this episode we want to drive around to drive home. At least I'm sure you're aboard a swing state is not just a state that is very, closely divided politically among its constituents and age, could go one way or the other. It is eight, where there are people who
There are enough people in that state who can be persuaded to change her. They vote for. that it can make a state go one way or the other we're on down to thousands, or even hundreds of votes, right and that is why it is so. So oh so important everybody votes, everybody votes, but Actually, if you live in one of these swing states because there are believe it or not. There are people, still haven't made up their minds in this country, which is really surprised in this particular election, because things have gone super partisan in polarized in American. They had been going that way for many many years now, but I mean it is, and I want to say is reached its apex. I Pope has reached its apex. I'm sure it could get way worse, but things are real. Polarized here. So it is very surprising that there's undecided voters in IRAN from our election pulling episode. We,
saying one of the reasons that the state pulling was so far off is because there are so many undecided voters at the end of two thousand sixteen bed in and of itself as pretty surprising, because the candidates were so different, things were so polarized. Then it's you, more surprising now, if there's any undecided voters but they're out there there's not a ton of em, but there's for them to swing an election and swing estate. Brookings instant, since, as seventy five percent or more. The presidential candidates spending occurs in these swing states. You know that their spending on adds a lot of it is advise and social media advise in a robot calling stuff like that, but we should go over just you know. I know he did one on the electoral college, but just for our friends across the many ponds- give kind a quick overview of the very odd way that we do things here, yeah, because everybody thinks in the United States that everybody goes to the polls, and
during a national election like the presidential election and elect the president. One person has one vote, and that is definitely true. Each person does have a vote, but the thing is: we have something called the electoral college in rather than directly elect the president. Through a popular vote, we have in indirect way of electing the president, where all those p but who go to the polls are going to the poles to cast a ballot, whether they know it or not, for the o, the electors for each party? So if you voted for Donald Trump in two thousand, twenty say where your voting for is not necessarily Donald Trump. Your voting for your states republican Party electors to go to the other throw college to cast their vote for Donald Trump rattled fully. That is the indirect way of electing the president that we have in under this.
Duration. Under this indirect electoral college set up that we have, you can actually get elected president without winning the popular vote and that's what happened in two thousand sixteen type in our times. Yet ass to the twice very recently happened in the two thousand election were AL think one the popular vote by half a million votes happen into doesn't. Sixteen were Larry Clinton one the popular vote by almost three million votes at two point- nine million- then it happened both times there. I think the nineteenth century didn't ya for time The other two were pretty far back in all four times report: Can candidates lost the pocket? boat and ended up being the winning the election and when will get into me no changes on the horizon as far as that goes, but to come, put a pen in the electoral college. How it specifically works is
each senator from each state, which is too senators, because each state has to get a vote and then for each representative in the house get a vote and everywhere except remain in Nebraska, does was called a winner takes all so If, if everyone in Georgia Urbino, if Georgia votes for fur, let's Joe Biden than everybody all the electors would have to vote for Joe Biden then cast both in Maine in Nebraska. What they do is, I think, and the goal here by the way- is two hundred and seventy electoral votes. If you want to win the presidency, but they do. The district system, which is they were two of those electoral votes to the state popular vote winner, and then they go. I think just district by District Dante, yeah they do, and so
so you can win, you know if you win your statewide election in Maine or in Nebraska, you get to elect all votes automatically, and then you get one for each district One yes, well is, it seems a little more fair. It does seem a lot more. but I saw that on fair vote dot. Org they stay said. If you do the math, it's actually weigh less fair on the relational level yet like maybe it works for Maine and Nebraska. But if all states did that you would be able to eke out an even more imbalance between the intellectual college win and a loss of the popular vote, I saw somebody put out that they that there is a path to two hundred and seventy electoral votes. So you would win the presidency while also getting just like twenty three percent
of the popular vote, while the you like to think that they can never happen, but apparently mathematically with the set up of the electoral college. It could happen in the reason why is because one the electoral college exists like he said, and then too because of that winner takes all system to wear it. the matter whether you win to state by one vote, you get off the electoral votes for that one state, and so in it in creating swing states. The electoral college also creates what are called safe states. An essay state is where so, people so reliably vote for the party that that candidate is running for that you can just count on that state, giving like winning their of their electoral votes, and you actually start with a base of that that that, like gum, let's say There- a hundred and seventy solid electoral.
boats among like twenty states for Democrats right that is you would rely on not just on election day but throughout the campaign, and so not spending much time or money in those states, because those who say states you don't need to it doesn't make any sense to do that. It makes way more sense to spend all your time and money and attention on those swing states, because those are the ones that aren't necessary really safe, but there also not necessarily leaning the other way either in you could conceivably put those swing states together to create. two hundred and seventy or more electoral votes, which should lead you to the presidency right you know. It's got a little tricky here in recent years, because there are a few sway. States that are kind of really solidly swinging and Then there had been a few that were more swing year, less Winnie, and you have to me The decision is a candidate where you're gonna spend your money in your time and we're pulling comes in People say that perhaps
Clinton, didn't spend enough time in certain states that ended up flipping to Donald Trump It's all strategy. Having now weaken, maybe take a look. Extended sidebar here about this whole blue state red state thing without a thought was very interesting yeah because it here in Amerika, we have blue states in red states. these states are the democratic, leaning states. The red states are republican leaning states. If you are sorted in the mix. Maybe a swing state, they might call you purpose, and the news, if you hear that, that's what that means, but didn't always used to be these colours, and I got this from NPR. I found it in thing to know that when the colors first started being assigned in the mid nineties, seventies The bad the Democrats were red and the Republicans were blue. Yes, a supposedly bellew is traditionally the Republicans
color, because it was the color, the union during the civil war and The union has led by Abraham Lincoln, whose republican and then though, apparently in Europe, the conservative parties are typically associated with the color blue, so it made more sense, at least at first sight to have Republicans be blue and Democrats be read in supposedly that's where it debuted back. Nineteen. Seventy six here in the United States on NBC, because embassy was the first network to have to go full color right and saw an election nineties. These six, they said check out, are amazing. Interactive map, blue states are gonna, be ones that role, the kinds of one read states or even be ones. The Democrats have won and dumb heavy did you see a picture, the man, yet it looks like, giant stained glass window near the United States, it does not look super flashy or anything but at the time it was like knock your socks off technologically advanced, I guess,
yeah. But here's. The thing is those colors weren't locked in like there was never any Nino vote about those colors or anything like that. They do some sort of went that way. as more and more tv networks went color they went with other colours and it got a little bit confusing, I'm depending watch which, network work. You were watching, you might see different colors representing different parties, and always red and blue, but they were going to flip laughed and it was till two thousand, in the Washington Post they credit, TIM, russet The late timorous, thirty best awaited here, unfortunately, yeah yeah. They credits him right, with kind of locking in what we now know, as blue states in red states, blue being for Democrat, read for Republican during the two thousand and between Gore and Bush, and these colours important because its and one of these writers- and here I was his name Bill- Bishop he's from texas- he wrote a book called the big sort and he can make.
really good point that has become a short hand of not just a leaning over state but sort of a lifestyle. Like you hear things you know it's a really blew neighbourhood or a red community, You can know that shorthand for certain thing in this country now, yen and part of the problem with with Firstly, designating entire states is like redder blue is that it makes it seem like theirs is homogenous group that is that idea that the whole state thinks that way, and it's not necessarily true, I mean there's plenty of states out there that there are considered red states, but they were one by one and a half percent or three percent. You know it's like a very most call, but it went republican in the presidential election. Swords are red state or, like you said, you know you can you can get under like community level. That kind of thing, and in doing so all you're doing, is sowing this division.
Of tribalism that exists in the United States to where it is so easy to have his allegiance to blue a red. They don't even make a donkey your elephant any longer. It's blue and red. It's one of the most basic things you you can sort by, which is colours and its it is a real problem in that it somehow stokes that mentality, that in group, our group mentality, that is so problem, in the United States re now in his drowning the the country as we speak. Basically, I hate to say it, but it's absolutely true. It really is in its especially annoying. If you have political leanings like I do and live in a state like Georgia, that is, for the past mean of twenty plus years, been solidly red. And then you know you have merely southern California, have plenty of
in California, hoop say things about. You know places like Georgia with such disdain, which bothers me so much because it is in these in It can be said for people on the other side of the political spectrum is not exclusive to to me being a liberal and George. It's I'm sure the same frustrations happen for Republicans in Massachusetts, absent, yeah. I'm quite sure in that I think it was You don't know where article that came from the they point out that those people are some of the most. I hard partisans you'll find you. People who are a minority in their state takes because they like they're, really carrying the flag for their party, you ever. But yes, it is the real problem- mail, it takes away all nuance in. It also makes people think, like oh you're, you're from a red state. I can't work with you. My constituents won't like it. If I work with you read state person rather than you're from Wisconsin and I'm from California this figure out how to make them
I will make more sense kind of thing in a year Emily, and I have a lot of conversations about the lack of nuance in today's world and its debts. The biggest problems we have gone on right now, nuance has been lost and everything is carved very much indeed red and blue and black and white and sad- and you know another thing that makes it said to his it. It's not just like that. Just a few owing to the lowest common denominator. Activates in all people, including brilliant, intelligent people, who are otherwise normally level, headed that they still have that part of it rain, similar like on blue arm red eyes. I feel I affiliate with that, and I hate the opposite: some it. is that when you lose new, wants a lot of stuff goes out the window with it or it will just take a break. That was our first so box of the day,
didn't. I thought we started out on a soap box at the Libyans. I guess I was gonna, be, I think, pretty even handed so boxes so right sure where we will come back and will build another so box in the next couple of minutes. You'll be back. After this target, each item you put in your car. Brings more good to life like a coffee brand opens more eyes to black business. Natural laws detergent puts a wider load on the planet, wheels. friendly, Halloween costumes. That said, make the lead in motion and make up celebrates beauty. And every shape, dear Good, you want is always within reach, because our target We believe in good. We can all afford
everybody we want to talk to you about ratios are a o apostrophe s, which can also be pronounced amazing, because Rio's homemade makes all their pasta sauce with naturally sweet tomatoes combined with only the freshest ingredients. Did you not? I chuck? I did because I legit have a pantry full of this stuff. I've got like eight jars in my pantry right now nice and we paid for it with their own money because Emily loves it. She loves her red, sauce and she's kind of a connoisseur, and she loves loves the radio's, because not only do they have the freshest ingredients, but they also slow simmer that sauce and small batches the weight should be done yet to Rio's. Homemade Delicious is a lot more than flavour, everybody. It also includes all those moments, on the table that we never forget, which is why Rios Homemade says make every day delicious,
ok so with were back on swing states right now. I think we should come to talk about how how they swing or how they have sworn or swank recently, because with swing states like you, you can't get this idea that their through the same all the time that is not the case, especially not lately. It seems like ninety. Ninety two and two thousand sixteen were both the watershed years. As far as just completely re colouring the alert Toro Map in ninety ninety two Bill Clinton did it in twenty. Sixteen Donald Trump did in it just surprised everybody both times, ninety two and, if
if you're, our age or younger, you might not have been super hip to politics when you're in high school, it say or early college, and you may not know that there was, what was called a red Wall dating call Red while back then, but it was a red wall where There was Republicans had a pretty firm, lock electoral college in that four nineteen sixty three, x to nineteen. Eighty eight twenty one states voted lookin every single election. And that included, you might be surprised to hear California Illinois and New Jersey, Amyloid Virginia, and here's the one Can it really make your heart stop Vermont, yeah rely Republican voted twenty one times in a row and That is a hundred ninety one electoral vote, so they The Democrats had a pretty big disadvantage going into ninety ninety, two historically meaning
they had to win more than three quarters. Of the remaining electoral votes for these current called competitive, her up in the upper Grab states and that's not counting DC, which Democrats have always got lock on yeah for the last fourteen elections, theses always gone Democrat right so there they come in wisdom was that when George H, W Bush went up for re election Not only was the incumbent president, which means that you're supposed to be favoured. Typically, he also had this red wall, which I don't know what they call the police lock on the Electoral College and It was presume that he was probably gonna win and then Bill Clinton came along and he flipped nines dates from that red, while not just a swing states. He flipped now. those Red Wall States which was eight hundred and eighteen electoral vote
and ended up winning three hundred and seventy two hundred and sixty eight fruit in the electoral college votes buddy bring me a sledgehammer basically what he did, though I mean it was. It was pretty precedent it and, like you said, just flips, the critical thinking in this country on its ear inflict them so hard, California Illinois New Jersey, Ember, might have a river her having voted Republican since the ninety ninety to elect. Yeah really reshape the map yeah. He flipped those republican, Lock states into democratic state. That's right and now they call it the blue all and they do called the blue all now. This blue is firmly ensconced, is Democrat, and there are eighteen states supposed among this blue all along with DC
voted Democrat in each of the most recent six elections from ninety two to two well previously for ninety two to twenty twelve. Right and that's when Trump came in and footed on its here once again, yet so he flipped some. traditionally democrat strongholds like Wisconsin, Michigan Pennsylvania, and he he did so by first of all, energizing voters that hadn't really been seen at the polls very much like our voters without higher education diploma thought of rural workers, especially blue collar workers, who had been lifelong Democrats, went out and voted for Trump and ended up taking. I think he flipped more than just those three oh yeah, he flipped five main in Minnesota unit, I'm sorry he flipped those three that's how we won the electoral college, but he also
One main any almost one Minnesota right in both of them were pretty pretty strong democratic states. Minnesota hadn't voted for Republican in like fifty year here, and he came close to flipping that, and so here's the thing or talking about all these states being flipped, because when a stick is flipped no action, especially if it's kind of close or narrowly held rather than flipped, that state is Prob we're going to be a battleground or swing state in the next election. yeah. So if you're wondering I mean, will list out the swing, states and sort of in that drama right here, but if you're wondering might be in a swing state. It has to do with quite a few things. Obviously the voting history there being predictable. If you voted for a long long time for a specific party. You're, probably not a swing, stay if your demagogue, demographics, in in that state, are
Traditionally, really support same candidate than your probably not going to be a swing state. The fact is, most voters in most regions of the country, most regions of this dates in this country, they vote based on. They really different opinions based on the x. Periods of just literally the physical place where they live right. So, like the rural voters, typically go GEO, P Republican, whereas people in metropolitan areas, major metropolitan areas, frequently go towards the Democrats and they have different experiences based on their geography and, depending on how balance that is how big the metropolises how big the rural area is an estate I'm compared to that, whatever metropolis or capital is there that can make that state of swings like North Carolina, is a really good example of that yeah there's a lot,
highly educated tech types. Scientific researchers who live in the research triangle in North Carolina there is also a ton of rural voters too, who are active in politics and those to balance each other. Around so North Carolina very frequently a swing state in presidential elections, because of that yeah and you know I do. I want to be clear: we're not like disparaging people who don't have diplomas. There are all kinds of ways to be smart. There's a lot of people of college upon that can't change their oil on their car or you know, or build offence those in those or other types of smarts all different ways to be smart, yea. Not that it all night worried if you listen to your election, pulling episode a a divide between college educated and Non College, educated voters
was created in two thousand sixteen, yet where it hadn't been there before exactly now. That is a major part of an american politics. Right so long in North Carolina this year and again, you know this is what they expect see it could be turned on it, your once again and states could be in the mix that we didn't, even for ass, you never know, but right now, they're saying that North Carolina His owner Florida always for this so important Michigan Pennsylvania, Wisconsin people say New Hampshire, some people, Georgia that some pigment it's a big one. Georgia has voted for democratic presidential candidate, I think I mean, as Vincent's since Clinton, never thought. I would Saxons ninety two and I think Texas possibly and georgia- have both drifted left by four points, with each of the last couple of elections and their sand that you know It's gonna be varied.
in georgia- and I don't think anyone is anticipating that it will flip right, but purple and in the mix for the first time in a long time yet, which is really saying something because I mean in Georgia, for many years, a few or a Democrat. It just did not matter like you, just didn't need to bother to vote and that's a big problem with swing states in the electoral law. That will talk about an you mean that metaphorically, by the way, right exactly, but I mean there's this- this whole concept of a wasted vote in a saint rate for the opposition party, their votes wasted, but we'll talk about that later. But just like there's some sums, pricing states that are now considered swing, states or battleground states and twenty twenty there's also some that, if customarily been swing, states that aren't necessary and the big stand out. One for that is Ohio. Ohio has voted for the president to correctly, or I should say they went fate,
The nominee for the candidate that that Ohio voted for been the president? the one who won the presidential re race in, like dozens of of of elections in May, not doesn't, but they ve been voting correctly for the president correctly picking the present I feel like I'm digging myself deeper into a whole here anyway. What does hi. Oh! Is that why Ohio is like really thinking group, politically speaking, because we have had republican President's and we have head Democrat President's through throughout the last few decades in Ohio. Has you know, voted differ? we owe you know just about every time- and this is their house. Longstanding swing. while our highways foot into doesn't sixteen and there's a lot of political observatory like Ohio, now leans conservative, yes, now a red state and that
A really surprising turn of events for twenty twenty, yet in Colorado, how in Virginia or three of the traditional swing states had been take, off that list Arizona Georgia. I dont think Texas officially on the list at all, but I think because taxes always been so silently conservative for it to eke towards the Democrats, at all, just making it a lot of hay so there's a lot more talk about it on the news and stuff like that right, because there how much media influence, and I think that, the liberal media, probably thinks it like. Oh Texas is leaning. Maybe we can help push him over the edge. We talk about it all the time, you're, probably because that's how things work, if you listen to the polling, podcast and like you mentioned earlier, Minnesota voted for a republican and about fifty years and Chris they are, you know they have entered a little bit right yeah. I think Trump just missed minister
Clayton, just barely one Minnesota by like three percent. Main by one and a half per cent serve, those two are definitely in play like they haven't been in a while to be taken of the break another breaking them. We're going to come back and talk about get this swing. States Josh and Chuck Definition Hey friends, if you enjoy enjoying things than Heineken. Now you can catch each year. MAX is new limited series, the murders of White House Farm streaming September, twenty fourth, an infamous true crime story. Over thirty years ago, three generations of one family were murdered at their isolated farm in England, initial evidence pointing the finger at the daughter of the family. What a history of mental illness, however, one detective refuse to accept them. As you do deeper into the investigation, he uncovered new evidence that sheds
species on a different family member. This six part Mitted Series uncovers the mystery behind what happened that fateful night, the murders of White House Farm streaming September, twenty fourth, only on HBO Max So I took one of the things we talked about early on- is that swing states basically tell campaigns where they need to concentrate their focus right or money their candidates time. You know election, stop that kind of thing, stumping end They do that, like that's, that's where the vast majority of the money goes into the advertising campaigns in these swing states. Floored is a really good example.
Long standing swing, state that gets tons and tons of advertising money. You're Florida is such an interesting state to me because It is it's really hard to pin down politically, and I think it's because I think more so than almost any other state. Except maybe California I feel like there are more versions of Florida, then Most any other state has versions of itself absolutely and it's not for is not small services California, but you know you think about the Gulf Coast. Then inland from the Gulf Coast. Very different people the people in that wouldn't be caught dead and floor Obama yeah you think about Miami each in area in key West and Fort Lauderdale, and then you ve got the interior of like the TIM,
Clearwater area which is really different and then without forget about the most magical place on earth, Orlando. Well, Gunnar Lando and then you ve also got up in the north, you Know- borderline georgie have places like Jacksonville in Saint Augustine and just flooded is has so many different kinds of ices within its own, stated that it doesn't surprise me. That's really hard to pin down politically could depend down to sort of culturally, I think right envy as you have so many different places that geographically inform the voters that are so demographically diverse all in one state, then that of course, is going to be a swing state in Florida, probably always will be a swing stages further reasons yet the retirees or a big they always pointer retirees in Florida, traditional conservatives, but Apparently, the youngest three generations amount to fifty four per a registered voters there now so surprised
Dear, I mean I guess, that's the sad way to say it is. Is that these people are dying. Yeah, I mean surely I mean there's an elderly populations going to eventually die off. Then there you got a younger populations right, so we can age into it, but it seems like right now: they're the elderly population. In Florida, has been losing ground numbers. Why while the younger populations have been gaining ground, a try there come and after the first but because we need all those young people the work to take care of all those old picture, so Florida gets a tremendous modem, tension a lot of money. A lot of campaign visits all that stuff and beat because it's a swing, see all swing. States get that kind of stuff in in presidential elections, but people in other states especially in solid states that have gone one way for many many election cycles, though,
people say what hey? What about us on attention? We want! These campaigns starts. We have things that are important to us that we want to talk to you about an hear from you about. We don't care about Florida we care about. Oh so come died, a hoe in talk to us in Idaho, in Canada who says, like I don't even know where I Hawaii please me alone, I'm trying to pay attention to Florida and you being very distracting right now yet Here's the thing like in my mind, I say who cares of a presidential candidate comes and talk the people at a dumb rally lying I like does that really matter, but what they do, as you know it just a broad sort of. Let me make a stop. There is very pin when did and calculated like they might going after really specific constituency there like, because how closely swing states are in they might say you know what, if we can get autoworkers to vote for, you will be set
or if we can get people that work on on public roads and infrastructure flipped our way than we can win by a thousand votes, and so they may make pits. In these states to go to the factory. I mean that's. Why do you do that stuff? It's not just to. He knows. I mean it, It's all this very calculated in very specific roles. The viewer on tv, like hey, I work in a factory in there at the factory right now. They must mean that they really identify with my needs and wants well true in one from another state that also just happens to work in a factory, but the people in that state feel like They are here to talk to the coal minors right. I can't believe they came to Michigan. No one Here comes the Michigan on purpose. We went to Michigan on purpose once We we have arrived on Detroit in a long time now it's been awhile, but that's really. What we're talking about again is calling for Detroit Lot not going to miss you, but it's just interesting
pinpointed and how like razor, sharp and focused, and laser focus campaigns are these days with talking to very specific groups of people if they think they can win a thousand votes out of a state that that can make a difference. It can because again, here here's what a thoud lit it literally. A thousand votes could make the president in in a state because of that winner takes all electoral votes, whereas if like States use the district system like main in Nebraska. You know if you won the one percent to forty nine percent. You might get half the delegates and they get the other half basically, but the fact that its winter too, all is that yeah. Those extra thousand votes really count in a good sized state for ten electoral vote. Twenty electoral votes so it's definitely worth spending that much time and focus on one single state and a lot of others
resent alot of non swing? States, a safe states resents swing states because they say basically of the Ohio and Virginia to decide who gets to be president. The rest of us are getting go. Voters were expected to because, if you're in a safe, it doesn't matter if you win by a thousand votes or win by it. A million votes you're gonna its winner takes all again too soon. I can appear. detention and really you're, not in way, you're not producing the president. That's a little sick go in my opinion, because without that solid, safe state, wouldn't have that foundation that the present the candidate is building. These swing state electoral votes off- oh yeah, I dont think that fully accurate, but there does seem to be like some sour grapes among safe state people. It that makes sense to me most of all chuck when you're talking about people who feel like their vote is wasted, because their voting for the the
Party. That's the opposite of how the state traditionally goes so at your Georgia voter. In your democrat for last several elections, you could very easily feel like your vote, was so wasted. You might not bother going to the Poles, because your vote in this sense of electoral college. This is a really reason, to do away with the electoral college. As far as the electoral causes concern. Your vote didn't count you, you had no reason to go vote as far as electing the president goes because it was washed away and drowned out by all the votes that went towards the other candidate. Since it's a winner takes all system of of electoral votes than that vote didn't matter because they were always going to win all those delegates, because you were going to get outvoted right, but Any and I'm glad you said the president. Specifically, you should always vote for the president, of course, but you're. So many ballot measures and local
local considerations on the ballot, local elections that really have such an impact that you always always always vote, but it's almost like it's almost filling out your senses, foreman away. It's the information that we have of where a state is politically is like asking your vote. Oh! If you cast your vote in Georgia like I do, and Donald Trump ones. George. Again, it's not a wasted vote because the, credit party will look at the numbers and say, while you know like you're doing now look how many Stacy Abrams almost got elected the purse Africa can female governor and the United States as one in Georgia in an election that many, but that was undermined by the republican candidate. With voter surprise, and that was a big deal. So now. That's. Why much attention is on Georgia because it's like your phone out, your little census thing, your casting that vote in theirs Ok. Well, Georgia's in the mixed now we're gonna we're gonna camps in Georgia more Puss, also theirs
the really good reason avaux in those situations as well like- I'm sure other voters in Vermont who felt like they were probably wasting their vote, one thousand nine hundred and ninety two, but they went dutifully to the poles and exercise their real basic, important right as a citizen. Their right to vote and Bill Clinton ended up flipping. The state had those people been like it's just a wasted vote anyway and stayed home that state wouldn't have been flipped right, the same, goes for was concept air Michigan Fur tromp in two thousand. Sixteen, so there's a lot of good reasons to go out and vote. Even if you feel like your vote is wasted, that's just It's just too cynical. The dead, you Know- and I understand especially in the in the during the corona virus pandemic in things- are definitely different. But under normal circumstances, especially the idea staying home, not voting. Unless your protesting against your parties candidate, that's different did they are united in a candidate. Ok sure I mean just
idea of getting out of the poles on election day participating in government. I have on that one day, every four years, even though its important it's it's just important in ways that you can't fully put your finger on. But you just know it's important. An important enough to just do it. Well, it's a right that people in this country, literally their lives to ensure, and it's a right that Not everyone in this country had until fairly recently and so it would be a very sort of privileged another was thrown around a lot, but it's it's a truly privileged of mine to think why, by voting. When so many people country, women and people of color didn't even have the right to vote in any now within the last hundred years right. So I just that something That's the only thing that really burned me a vote for whoever you want to vote for, but if you sit at home- and you don't even vote- then just get out
you know what I took a vote or die is a dead end. So one other thing that really has grab me in the last like several years is the DE idea. When I was younger lad, I was voting. Doesn't matter doesn't count everything's controlled by the Illuminati anyway, urea anarchists, so The idea that that the Russians are meddling in our election and that the the the the candidates take the elections so seriously Super peccary, so much money to spend a try to sway people's pub opinions. The idea that that actually happens in real life to me goes to support the idea that your votes actually do count that voting really does matter in the United States still and things are not so thrown off course. Control than under the thumb of people who, who you are really pulling the strings in calling the shots that actually doesn't exist
that in reality voting matters, and I think that the threat devoting that we ve seen over the last like several years, have really kind of. In their home. For me, yeah- and you know what you ve by the time is comes out, will be a couple of months to go before the election. Are actually maybe one month ago check your voter registration, make sure you know where you're gonna vote If your voting early make sure you understand that, if your voting absentee or by male make sure you fully understand how that all works don't be surprised on election day. You don't want any surprises, you wanna make sure you know exactly how you gonna boat, in that you can ensure that you can vote absolutely go to USA, Doc Gov to check out voter registration. and make sure that you are late to confirm that you're registered Devoe. I still check the I checked recently
you and I tweeted it out on this- that we should know podcast twitter platform to totally. Then we should put a bonus when, by talking a little bit about the national popular vote, interstate compact, you read my mind in this sad and pv. I see this is a group of states that advocate for different plan moving forward. These are states and people that say how, can a candidate win by three million votes or fight four thousand votes and not be President that is clearly not the will of the people. We have a broken system. Let's get rid of this, to our college. and right now there are sent an organ. California, Colorado New Mexico, from New York Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode, Island, New Jersey,. Delaware, Maryland DC in Hawaii are all signed up, to pass legislation to enter this compact with several more pending Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina
Virginia appending right in somewhat as complex as a state signs onto the compact that says, under normal electoral college rules. We give our electoral whoever wins the state. Why ballot? Instead, we're going to give you, whoever wins the national vote, the national popular vote. So even if say Joe, by loses, Idaho, if I too signed onto this in this thing were in effect, but he won the national park. Ro Idaho would give its electoral votes to bite and so that the states are gonna. Follow the popular vote. and basically go around the electoral calleja, not enlarging yeah by using the electoral called here, because you can abolish it- would take a constantly no amendment and ratification by thirty eight states, I believe, to get rid of the electoral college. This requires none of that. It's the
date signing on to go around the electoral college by using the electoral college- and I mean we should say to the electoral college- is part of the framers vision for the constitution, but they specifically added this provision to keep the popular vote from selecting the president. They wanted to keep this only group of politicos in charge of who actually pick the president and that's they created the Electoral college to get in the way of the popular vote interesting so that's swing states, a that swing. States do I know more about swing states start reading up on swing, states start reading up on, politics is pretty interesting stuff and, like we said earlier, go vote just voted on since I said that everybody's time for listener mail, this is from Mckenna Bridge, and this is indefensible. Baby carrots- Just like the thought. A baby carrots disgusted me in the past country.
in conjuring up images of towering piles of food waste that I imagined, where the byproduct of smooth little suckers. but we got it all wrong. My friend weather because it is of course a very manicured in aesthetically pleasing version of the real carrot pulled straight from the soil mention basically change the entire curate industry for ever and there was a guy name MIKE Euro, Sick who decided to smooth carrots down nineteen eighties into these little aerodynamic bites. I cylinders They were called baby carrots. He figured here it's ugly and two plentiful to profit to profit from his farmers, so they had a long growing season and the people just weren't buying them. So MIKE you psoric, I'm sorry. Euro sick, it is the baby carrot and boom cared sales. Absolutely skyrocketed. Indeed, today's debate. Baby carrots frequently top the list for the largest share of supermarkets sales, while
asking about the peels guys They are just about the perfect byproduct for making carrot juice, a baby character tasty. in it in turns out a wonderful invention, the more you know right anyway, completely cut up on your part. Guess so maybe where's beat me too the punch, but I didn't want can't you are making fools of yourself the next time baby. Baby carrots comes up he has a great keep up the amazing work. Your life sooner and baby carrot convert a bridge and even it up to you, and I think I saw that it was a myth that their bleached, but something I would buy into his something I'd buy into do big care it. I'm sorry, small Garret character. Bleach. The Illuminati really runs things, so that I haven't fully vetted all that. But that's what Mckenna Bridge says is that they re He turned around carrots as a whole and that they do use those shavings this really your carriages. What she says
