For much of his life, Donald Trump Jr. has been disregarded by his father. He played only a bit part in the 2016 campaign and when the team departed for Washington, he was left to oversee a largely unimportant part of the Trump Organization. But after The New York Times revealed that he had played an integral role in organizing the Trump Tower meeting between campaign officials and Russians promising information on Hillary Clinton, the younger Mr. Trump struck back hard at his father’s detractors and the media, finding a voice and an audience. Aggressive, politically incorrect and with an instinctual understanding of the president’s appeal, he has become a conservative darling and his father’s most sought-after surrogate. Today, we look at his rise to prominence. Guest: Jason Zengerle, a writer at large for The New York Times Magazine.

From the New York Times. I'm likeable bar on this
we're here tonight to talk about the great american story, one of the most memorable speech
of the Republican National convention. This week was from the president's eldest son,
Biden and radical left are now coming for our freedom of speech, a blistering attack on Dubai in the
or can left. They want a boy,
since the submission. If they get their way, it will no longer be the silent majority being the silent majority,
the predicted a national descent into anarchy, violence and oppression. People of faith are under attack, you're not allowed to go to church, but mass chaos demonstrates gets a pass. If voters do
we elect his father? Imagine the life you want to have one with a great job of beautiful home, a perfect family. You can have it today,
my colleague Jason's, angrily on
on juniors long journey from family outcast to right wing star and now to his fathers
little air. That is the life, that is the country that is world, that Donald Trump and the Republican Party or after and yes, you can have it
it's Friday August twenty decent. It feels like
Dont frontrunner has had many different lives and the most recent of those is what we saw at the republican convention this week. But where does that story start? It literally starts in the hospital room when he's born on New year's Eve and nineteen. Seventy seven, his mother wrote a book a few years ago in which she were counted the scene where she tells her husband that she wants to name him, Donald
Junior and Donald Objects, saying no? You can count on Junior what, if he's a loser la from there?
nothing else flows. I used to kiss him before going to school every morning.
Seven o clock in the morning I'm going to school house gives it needs to say couple things: no smoking, no drinking no drugs, but then he followed up with don't trust anyone ever and he followed up two seconds later with so do you trust me,
of Course, you're. My dad said what did I get here? He thought I was a total failure. You, my son, the loser. I guess it
sister of Vodka, who is the second oldest, was clearly as fathers pay for it, which is your favorite from child, and why is it even under utilised? Man? That's something! That's dawn speaks very kind of jokes about it now, but he does talk about it. All the same hundred four percent hundred percent in I'll even see
only the purposes of this interview. She filled all the things that her father kind of envision for his children. She was a model. She was polish. She loved him immensely dawn at a much more tortured relationship with his dad. You yourself said that you say a Trojan, maybe once a week in a somewhat famously after his father and his mother, divorce you're having a lot of difficulties with the twelve year old Son, Dounia, haven't talked to him since May DAWN was twelve and thirteen at the time and he refused to speak to his dad half for a year.
I mean this is a very painful such I am not going to disparage of honour as a woman or as a moral duty, but he was clearly someone who is kind of being pinball back and forth between his parents. He was at a terrible
age. Where does he was old enough to actually realise what was going on his two siblings, a bunker, an era where, in some ways too young to understand he was, he was old enough to understand. He was old enough to get teased by his classmates, and I think it was just a steering experience for him. I always feel that is very important to be really with age,
London or Jailer Donald anyway, my job and if anyone had children, if any one of my children go I'll, always take the limit of what I'm doing.
And so what is the reaction of this young man? Who's been pinball between his to parents and
no doubt understanding very well that they are going through a highly public, very ugly divorce. I think his reaction someways was to try to get away from it and his parents item to boarding school in Pennsylvania, and he just tried to forge kind of his own
distinct identity there he got really into the outdoors. All these are the things we do want a weakens our free time. We're shooters were hunters, we're outdoorsman in a way that his father just couldn't understand. Well, they love hunting and I've always loved hunting. I don't and just found for her
thing. Baffling hoovered I've never been a fan and I haven't actually seen anything, but I've never been a fan of it now, but
Don Junior, really arms report himself into that
and when he was gonna go to college, he was thinking about actually going to University Vermonter Universal Colorado, it's gonna be a ski bomb and eventually he sort of relented to his parents wishes anyone, cleaners, Pennsylvania, where's, dad again,
but even the air. He really kept a low profile. He did not try to make a big deal
of his name and you at this point. His father was famous me, wasn't obviously a politician, but he was a celebrity business man. People knew that the transfer right is, is it? Is it sometimes a burden, or always a luxury? To have trump? Is your last name,
Stephanie burden associated with at times about the people who knew him in college said he really tried to play down. His name is ok, so is it true that there are times when you just into have introduce yourself is done and forget the Trump part? I do it often yeah. I note to the point
wherein is a fraternity? His nickname was wrong, rob and
he went by IRAN and one of
Only brothers told me that he thought near one of the reasons he liked the name was just gave him another level of anonymity. So this point he is distancing itself from the family. Yeah he's trying to figure out his own path and after graduation had a job waiting for him at his father's company, but he didn't take it. He went out to aspen for about a year and a half, and these
need any hunted any fished and he was a bartender. I now have this image in my head of
Don Junior as a kind of Conor Roy figure for succession fans, the kind of Joe blew up
his world right, I mean he's gotta, dropping out of the family business and it sounds like MRS rebellion. Yes
but after a year and a half out there, I think he thought he had to take his place in the family business and he went back to New York City and he went to work for his dad and he gave up four
plaid flannel in the camera and he started wearing the pinstriped suits and the wide ties and slipping back his hair, and now he seemed a sort of surrender. Hence the expectations that he was. He was gonna, become his father's protege
so. How does that go for him? The fighting? Is it doesn't go all that? Well, what do you think are our greatest strengths and weaknesses? What do you think we need to improve on work on or what things we should just leave exactly the way there are. Then there was an
word fit for him. You, young and you're, not always focused, and you have to keep focused when times got bad. I wanted focused and that's why I came out so strong and other people. They went bankrupt and gone and never never to be. Seen again. Many of my four seem like his greatest value to the family business. Oddly enough came on the television show, the apprentice
which he knew he joined us a cast member few season, there said Donnelly Vodka, the other famous father. Is that easy? Or is it tough
It's definitely not always easier is definitely advantages to it. We ve got to be spoiled, hopefully in all the right ways. I think it's tough figures, Eureka and again why he was one of the board
room judges. Why work for me? Why not go someplace else getting to work on the best projects in the world and day that the producers
These are the people who worked on the show. Overcast members talked about him as being this kind of stabilizing presence on the set mainly be.
Ass. He was, he was willing to run interference between them and his dad half his dad. Would you know how these temper tantrums and get angry at people and Junior would try to assuage his father and also comfort the people his father is mad at there is a saying: it's not your fault. It's your turn.
He and he seemed to really be intent on just trying to make other people feel comfortable around his dad. I'm in people talked about how he would tell jokes, which was not typical on the set but Don Junior or tell them and then make people laugh. If you don't mind still Joseph does own expense. Why don't you know that you'd like me to teach you? What do you think? I know everything's those in the trunk. Now I'm a drum Ivan.
To be able to do the three for a couple years and gets so at this point it sounds like Don juniors, Prima
the margins of the family business. I mean if you are running interference with angry employees of the apprentice you're, not exactly central to the Trump organization. Now he's a peripheral figure in the Trump organization. These are peripheral figure. I think in his father's life and then when his father decides to run for president, he is very
much on the outside. Today I have the honour of introducing a man who needs no introduction of anger and her husband, Jared customer are the linchpin of the campaign in the early days. They have few really just sweeping influence over all aspects of it. Ladies and gentlemen, my father Don all J Tramp, but Don Junior is given these very discreet small kind of tasks to do for the campaign like what so before the ILO Carcasses, Donald Trump is being attacked and I were for being a city slicker and being in a closet liberal. So, while Donald Trump sets his sides caucus when here and I am even pull the trigger
you'll get to shut out of his sons. Donald Junior and Eric have extended the campaign trail to the corn fields of I. What were they are literally aiming for pheasants dawn, who is a hunter get sent out to ILO with his brother era, is also a hunter and they gonna pheasant hunting expedition in front of all these cameras. Donald Trump apparently says to dawn your damn. You can finally do something for me even go. Hunting is your showing islands that this party or culture, often very much so that we get into a very young age and he's just given these
little sort of things that he can't mess up budgets in mind, for the dawn. Definitely did one big thing.
During the campaign, and he
stand up very significantly. Yeah.
The one area that he showed some initiative and when
side of his lane was in arranging for a meeting between russian lawyer who said she had damaging information on Hillary Clinton and campaign officials like Chair, Kirshner, his brother in law,
Oh man afford who is in the campaign german he arranged for her to come from tower to turn over the damaging information she had on health.
What is now known as the meat, the Trump Tower Meeting
yeah. This is the meeting that eventually will threaten trumps presidency, but at the time, no one
those about the meaning of certain people who were in the meeting and to them, it was nothing. It was Don Junior brought this woman in saying she was gonna, give a start on Hillary Clinton and she gave us nothing and then, when Trump winds of vodka,
and Jared they go to Washington and they become members of the White House and-
dawn and and his brother Eric stay in your ostensibly to run the Trump organisation of their fathers president, but in dawns case dawn, is put in charge of the international side of the Trump Organization and because of a promise that his dad made about not doing far deals. He can only work on pre, existing,
can't you any new deal. So not only has he not Moderns Father frenzy rule has everything to do at the Trump organization he's just gonna left in New York and everybody forgets about, but then breaking
and stunning news, and our politics leads today the release of an email chain from last June
Donald Trump Junior and this man in summer. Two thousand seventeen, the New York Times, finds out about the trunk tower meeting from the previous summer. Camp Junior took that meeting on the promise of getting dirt on Hillary Clinton from the russian government and don't forget, then campaign chairman Paul manner.
Was in that meeting so was resident son in law and suddenly use foreign centres
The initial defence of the hunt him her from here from the trunk people.
Is that a doll from Junior is an area that is exactly the story
This is done, Junior being an idiot he's, not a trader just stupid. What struck me as I look back and thought about the exchange between Don Junior, his father Michael Cullen, who was trumps personal. Turning at the time, he told us Senate panel that Mr Trump had frequently told me and others that his son Don Junior had the worst judgment of anyone in the world. President Trump thought that donging or has the worst judgment. If anyone has ever met in the whole world, it was more like he was resigned to a sense idiocy he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer Trump said with a sigh. The president is telling people that Don juniors, not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I mean what a way to think of your kid and your Chris Christy's out there saying from Junior, I know very well,
is by no means a sophisticated political after this is it. This is the guy who loves his father, godfather policies. This is father, got involved, but I'll think Darwin, gotten environment there all just trying to basically minimize Don Junior and just say they do this.
And base our friends on the five and walk on the Hannity, and this is a fox those Lord, but dont Junior. He decides he wants to defend himself. Donald Trump Junior is here tonight to set the record straight about as June twenty six.
Team meeting with a russian lawyer who will join us for an exclusive end up interview, that's coming up in just a minute
but then he goes on Fox news. He goes on shown how to show. How did you get this
what good lawyer for issued at another time left
he delivers a really kind of aggressive hard hitting performance. He young attacks a media. I think that
history? Media is probably done themselves into a pretty big disservice by going so far by going so extreme. By being so sensational, eventually start attacking Robber Mahler. I've said
publicly said yesterday, more than happy to cooperate with everyone? I just want to try to get out there, and that's part of wire really saw this after that. I wanted to get it out. This is attacks congressional Democrats, someone sent me an email. I can't help, but someone sends me you know I read it. I responded accordingly and if there was something interesting there, I think it's pretty come dungeon and thanks for coming, and thank you for your answer and every question I can think of when we come back more than a legal and as he kind of finds his voice in attacking his father's critics. In the people were investigating his father, he really becomes a star to his his father supporters and I think they obviously love the fact that he is Donald Trump Junior and they loved the fact that he's aggressive and he's a fighter and jellies. He says politically incorrect stuff, but he himself has a comfort with Red America that I think his father in some ways does enemy, certainly like
longer dozen trump supporter see that him. They can recognize that in him and once he finally comes out of the shadows and in a release or take centre stage in new and embraces this role as his father son and his father's kind of most vigorous defender and also to falls in the place from there. It is interesting Jason, as you said earlier, that advances role was to become the smoother of her fathers. Registration is gonna, send down all these
sharp elements of his political personality and no doubt is taking on the role of somebody who amplifies that divisiveness about tantrum
yeah you and Don Junior for a guy who was kind of off. You know in the corner, and no one was listening to him. It turned out. He had a much better on what kind of institutional understanding of what his father's appeal was and what is more, there actually would be as a precedent.
He had no delusions that his father could be tamed anyway, that vodka thought you have. You could polish him. He didn't think I was possible and he realized that that would actually not be a successful presidency that that would not appeal to the people who put Donald Trump in the White House, and I think you know in a strange way he turned out to be kind of a smarter political actor than evocative. He had a deeper understanding into what really made his father's presidency work than his sister. Yes, and I think he had
he had a deeper understanding and who is much more clear. Eyed about who is father was, and what is always do for Donald Juniors at times quite strained relationship to his father, starting new and twenty seventeen after the trunk, our meeting comes too late and starting with Don juniors defensive himself in defence of his father. He allowed
for Don Junior to take on a bigger and bigger role in his political operation. Class sims, who worked in the White House for awhile, tell me a story about one day. He was in the dining reminding oval office with the President, who was watching cable news and Don Junior came on and the present gonna stop. He was doing and turned up the volume and was just sort of expressing kind of admiration and surprise about how good done junior was on tv say. He's he's really good at this, isn't he then? I think you started dawn on his father that his son, actually maybe was good for something or doing back. This type cast is supported by clearly the streaming service. Racism has long been a part of life for others. It's a reality that only recently come into clear focus as peaceful protest against police violence with the nation in the world. With the widespread calls for changes to the way we treat black Americans and our,
society. A lot of our readers and listeners are asking where they can learn more about how we arrived at this moment. One thousand six hundred and nineteen is all
theories from the New York Times in it. We consider the four hundred years of history that followed the arrival of the first enslaved Africans and what would become America
and asked whether we truly understand our past and its connection to our present. You can find one thousand six hundred and nineteen wherever you get your podcast.
Citizen Donald Junior takes us blow point
and his own relationship with his father, that from tower meeting and premature low point for the presidency,
and he really turns out into a robust new role and his father's world that has induced him to Donald Trump Senior and, at the same time, is building up Don Juniors brand so that some pretty serious lemonade from lemons
and I think he decides he's gonna try to make even more of it. So in
He doesn't eighteen, he reads an article on politico com,
ending on his emergence and how has become kind of a good presence for add dad on tv and there's a coordinates
or from guy really young Republic inoperative named Andy's Arabian who had worked at a pretty low level in the trunk, twenty sixteen campaign and then water,
The ban in the White House before Ban inflamed out and circadian says something nice about how Don juniors, like a good surrogate on behalf of his dad. He soon die

The eighteen they announced are getting divorced, and then, a few months after that, Donald from Junior and Fox news personality, cleverly guilt oil are reportedly dated. He goes public with his relationship with Kimberly Gulf Oil and gas oil at the time was a Fox news commentator guilt. Oil is composed of the five an irregular supporter
the trumpet Ministration C and Don t. You have a lot in common that she was no one who then circling around the Trump White House for a while there were been discussion. Rumours that she was gonna, become trumps press secretary. She was seen a various events. She like a lot of fox personality. She was someone who seem to kind of want him.

Don juniors girlfriend, as vat fall now he's Gus raving working for him, he's got, can go foil as his girlfriend and Don Junior gonna hit. The road
make sure that we get out in. He does something like seventy events in seventeen states, stumping viable,

Soon. I believe, as you can see, actually look we I mean he is now in the air asthmatic for ashore and there again some young man first, nor I is not really noticed some boring as though gang is really matter storm all the Trump family. As for America, and I can see Donald Trump Junior being our next president.
Republican candidates to start pestering other Republican. Cannot, you had done junior of for them, but they want donging yourself on number. They want to get a tweet from John Junior. These guys, her difference made in West Virginia present want to state by full. He becomes
most valuable surrogate than the Republican Party after his father, everybody wants is endorsement. Everybody
some designer emails. He becomes it's just this hot commodity, it sounds we don't from Junior, has we
Homer star in the Republican Party, mostly by emulating his father's combative style yeah. I think that's definitely part of it, but you know his father can have
revises with that combative style, Don juniors different, he he's much more strategic and disciplined in terms of the way he fights and the fights he picks and in twenty nineteen. I think there is a really good example. Thus he wrote a book called triggered, which goes out to be a huge best seller, because the currency buys a lotta copies of it and cells at noon donors, but it
the course of doing the publicity for triggered. His publisher wants him to do some mainstream media is doing a lot of fox like serve atop radio and they reach out to the view, and they asked the boy

yeah. You ve really see this online he's very much like a social media creature ain't. He spends you all
time in the world like on his phone like looking a twitter looking instagram he's kind of steeped in these sort of conservative twitter account and servants,
how to get all the means, but he's smart
in the way he deploys summer. I think they want. The best examples is
earlier this year when his father delivered the state of the union. Madam speaker, Mr Vice president, members of Congress
The first lady of United States, Nancy Pelosi tore up a copy of the species,
memorably here for a few hours that became kind of a cause for celebration. Among liberals. Finally, tromp ended the speech and Nancy policy. Did this
There is a need for liberals. She ripped him a new one. We have a great show for you tonight,
the next day dawned Junior was having launch. Of course, the Trump Hotel and easy- and he
This idea Fer a video to create a meme of the state of the union and you he himself can actually create videos, but he knows people who
and one of them is a man. Embedding Johnson penny Johnson used to be a journalist was essentially drummed out of the profession for plagiarism in all sorts of other offences,
but he's gonna found a new career as a right wing mean maker. He works for a group called turning point USA, which the conservative group
and Don Junior called betting Johnson with his idea for the state of the Union Mean video he wanted to make and many Johnson
took Tangiers idea, Ernie got to work, and in a few hours later he had the video and Don Junior posted to his twitter account Charles's
one of the last surviving Tuskegee airman, the first black fighter, pilots,
and the video was highlights the speed
the more the benign parts of the speech here. The nicer moments. I can browse
They announced tonight that an opportunity scholarship has become a veil.
Is going to you and you will soon,
heading two: the school of your choice,
and the video that dont junior
your foreign than any Johnson created, took those moments and then airspace footage of policy ripping up to speed
we can only guess at the end of the entire thing and so look like policy was tearing apart. You know Tuskegee airmen, fourth, greater this state,
Our union is stronger than ever before.
According to many Johnson, this video got fifty million views, which is twice as many as the people who actually wash the state of the union on television, a very successful mean yeah, it turned out to be the perfect kind of trumpets and Meme
you know it occurs to me whether dont from where
reelection, or not, that Don Junior will have
really distinguished himself in this campaign and thinking back to work.
This story started the family business that Don Junior rejected was real estate right. It was the kind of old line legacy from family business, but the families business now is politics and media and cultural wars and he's not,
the black sheep of that business he's the star, so we're lose, does feel like Don Junior. Is the air
of this new version of the Trump business yeah
not only is he the air like he wants to be the air like he's position himself to be the air, and I think that a vodka in she obviously worsen the White House, but she letting plans to go back to New York plans to go back to her old life, went on without any possible for
but that's what she thinks he's gonna happen. Yon Eric Trumpets has running. The Trump organisation is to keep on doing that. Don unionism want to go back to New York is wanting about the Trump organization he wants to stay in politics. He wants to take what his father is built and use as a platform for himself, and he wants
keep ongoing of whether Trump Windsor loses this November. Don Junior is gonna, stand politics. The relevant parties become
are you tromp, bright and read the question now is what comes after tromp? What is his influence on the party? What is his legacy, and I think there are probably some people out there who imagine that if, if
were to lose this November. He would go away and Trump isn't disappear. I dont think that's gonna happen,
and I think wanderings won't happen as having Don Junior still gonna be out there carrying that banner, and he is really become his father's political error.
But isn't. Thank you very much represent thanks. So much for a meal will be right. Back is tat. Cast is supported by creepy the streaming service. The fresh original stories that unfolded minutes creepy has been nominated for ten Emmy whites, including the thriller most dangerous
