From the New York Times, I'm Michael borrow! This is a day for millions of Americans. for years have been a national trauma today, as Joe Biden prepares to the oath of office and become the forty sixth president of United States? Some of his supporters are filled with hope, some with concern, but with relief. It's Wednesday January, twenty. Various Hey Brian, her mind gone. It's been a long year. Has it ever, a boy of war. Brian You sure you remember the last time that we talked and let me pressure lemon reflect our listeners memory. Could you
you surely remembered it was right before Super Tuesday in the middle of a democratic primary, and you were a deeply conflicted democratic voter because, yes, you loved Joe Biden, your personal connection, within dating back to your college days when he spoken in the rather you organised and what you told us home spoke to you back and was it you feared? Joe Biden was not as show the right candidate to beat Back Bernie Sanders who ascending at that moment and whose views you disagreed with, and you frankly feared that Joe Biden was not necessarily the right candidate to be back present trump and Just remind you what you said back, then you said So I larger gentlemanlike him, but he has not been a strong candidate.
I think it doesn't look good, I think he's not sounding good and Joe Biden, who is a great guy is, Playing by the rules book that was written in nineteen eighty, maybe one thousand nine hundred and seventy two- and that's really concerning to me, because Donald Trump's going to fillet and very quickly. this very bluntly, you were wrong on on both fronts, because Biden did beat Bernie Sanders on superfluous. And afterwards he be present Trump by seven million votes there. Is there anything you want to see for yourself. This is what my daughter caused the the brigantine effect. Perhaps the very next day fighting rolled over everybody else and one all those primaries was unbelievable right. He it was Virginia South Carolina. It was everything
He was the de facto nominated right literally the next day, and that's the Joe we were looking for and by the way. The next day I voted for J M. So ultimately, the Democrats picked the right candidate to do that. What do you think at the core of your wrongness, not to put that to wear. It well My wrongness was actually more not so much a wrongness as a struggle that I think a lot of voters were having, which is. we go with kind of the dignity. A guy like Joe Biden or the fight of either are Bernie Sanders or a Michael Bloom brain, and that was The kind of the challenge which one is gonna win- actually, I think, at the end of the day, what we saw nothing, but this country season quickly now is really that, if the dignity of a guy, like Biden, that one people over
In our original conversation, what you seem to fear was that Biden in terms of his energy. His presence nature you might not be up for that ask of winning the primary and beating Donald Trump, and if That was your fear back then, is it your fear that he might not be up to the challenge of this very unique and pretty dark moment now that he has one which somehow governing as president successfully What feels like a breaking point in the United States needs good. That's a good point from before to now in to me he's proven his metal in the way he's run, his campaign remained and impart well cause he's been so consistent in not taken. Debate and he was always kind of above it and it was like
This is a guy he's, not gonna, get down there and play that mean calling game he's gonna keep focused and do job in economic, alleviating Alderman call what you would call dignity. Yes, exactly like oh he's already. President is that what you're saying that Joe Biden will model they use he wants himself in his conduct as president? And so I wonder what sign or images or rhetoric you'll see from man. That makes you think but he's on the right track towards trying to build unity in this moment will in order, build unity. I think we, the kind of almost breaks, some of the the note that we assume, which is what is unity, because, quite frankly, to some folks It sounds like weakness right now. You know why, when
gonna have unity. How can I stand there with? You know, people who were who have profoundly stood and watched people invade the? U S, capital, like the one sided them right now they have to be punished, for it like we can just be unified of these people is that there has to be a punishment first before we can just be unified, people, need to be held accountable before You can say everything's, ok and that I think that's true whether someone's five years old and they a window and again just say: hey: no, it's ok! You show that no yeah reactor fix the problem. Before you say: hey you never do it again and coo attend The United States of America from within that was unblock. It is unbelievable. Scary. To me than nine eleven I mean that day Thank you, my children. Unlike do understand these are not. This is not a foreign invader. Did our neighbours who are people from
Just an hour flight away, I mean it's like this: is we ve never ever seen anything like this, and that needs to be fixed. So it never happens again, but there is real opportunity here to by the way use them. As an opportunity to bring together the country and so yeah. You know what I am Joe Biden and I am the president- and this is how it is going to be fixed and vigorous, drank war what, if dignity and modeling unity and reaching across the I'll just isn't enough and does does convince many very good reason to think it might not convince. Tens of millions of Republicans who have been told by his victory is illegitimate to see him. their president and for there to be any human? Is that something you fear well by and large people are of good nature, and I think we really need to remember that
We really are now one were called tour. Worst natures, all of us. a problem to actually forgot to our worst nature, and myself included, so we just if we can be called to our best nature, We really were. They are already so that's gonna number one in what I really The thing is fascinating is just Social media, twitter, predictably, is a real the challenge for free speech, quite frankly- and we ve seen him, His trunk is now off twitter. The Big news, as you know, is dropping precipitously, and that is unbelievable to me that event. There President United States has been the one to create this fake news, and so it's ok. Well, you know I can call fire and proud a movie theater mediation. Say you lie to a million people and that then actually may help the republic's, if
so you're saying just as turning off that force. It is a step towards unity, Is it really is huge? Now the problems not fixed, I mean, but is a huge stevinus aids, like oh hang on everybody? We really don't hate each other that much because I just doubt that you're, not his terrible, a person, as I had thought I just I'm being fed, constant information about how terrible you are and if I'm not fed that constantly vision, about double, but you are because you're not really that terrible. Then maybe. We can actually have a real conversation now that we will have to get along and hold hands, but maybe just not that terrible a person like we don't have to talk about. Oh my god,. Are you not give any data now I loved what he did. I hear he hates these people now. I guess I hate those people, then too. We must avoid them like it's like now. We don't have to do that. So just
Summarised the brine, keen theory of the case here is turn off the flow of misinformation, inaugurate a president who represents dignity, generally lower temperature and american politics creates less drama all day and use to have a real shot at unity. American seeing themselves as people not enemies. and the chance of actually getting big things done, and then I think we ve done by inviting in place. We are restoring the first break of dignity to the United States and the world I remember you telling me that when you're a young man in college you first met Joe Biden became to speak at your political union. You had dreamed, he would run for president on along political journey with him. This is a man affection, but but you had that dream when you met him so now that he has done it, and he has one- are you scared are you?
four. Are you nervous? Are you excited him? Where is your mood? Knowing the challenges that he's gonna face running at noon on Wednesday, well So alright, so I was, I met him at eighty, nine, one thousand nine hundred and eighty nine and it's not a twenty twenty one. So this is working out just like we Forty years later, the exact thirty one thirty somebody relating to rape is exactly like. We plan there exists. This is Unbelievably to me this is the more meeting the man. I swear to God like and I know, and he ran and eighty eight IRAN in two thousand and seven. This is the moment meeting the man I swear if he had won the other times. It would not be this momentous, but today this is a precedent. Then this country needs right now, after Trump,
we always say politics as a pendulum. This is that. We in pension, but it is not the pendulum. I've left and right is the pendulum, a personality, and this is the personality that we need: a man, who's gonna, restore dignity through his own actions, his own faith in his own faith in the american people and where she restore dignity to our country and actually quite right into each other. We're gonna be better people to each other and we need to be because we are well for an hour. Thank you for making time for us again. We really appreciate any time really thank you for doing, can have these questions. I think it's really important, Michael, and I really think I know there's a lot of concern and asked trot. Country, about just about all of this, but I think were a step closer to home. to really unbelievable days for all of us.
I wonder there are so many people who would expect you to feel this deep sense of relief and excitement and I'm curious how close how accurate that is, how close that comes to your feelings? Now, Oh, you know by any Medina politics reporter with the times when I Candy Yola earlier this year, she's an immigration policy to this end, Arizona famously abiding over the Obama administration immigration record during the debate in the primary run it, because so many people and yet the day. that bite and won the election. I know he has. We went in it so many times, but the day that we but we knew that biting was going to be the president. I I did. I felt a little physically felt a sense of
leave that we we didn't have to keep on, theory now what was gonna be the next attack coming from the administration and that fell really Graham my body and mind the next day, You know it was just kind of getting up to like ok, what's the next, what's the next move, what's the next fight understanding that for immigrants for people who tend to be the targets for Republicans rate, if you hear political ads on tv from a democratic public and Republicans gonna be campaigning around immigration, Democrats, not to say anything most of the time about immigration, and so we are not afraid ready for it for the most part in. So I think for me, not just relieve? I think it's just now. I feel a sense of urgency to star pressuring you know. And again and starving,
ability to make sure that immigration is a priority for him, his administration. What's your what's your biggest fee, What are you worried about under the binding administration? Is it just been ignored, or is it more than hand? My biggest fear? Will there the line, but I think one of them is that a lot of progressives and Democrats have this. This under. standing that, under the governance of a Democrat, immigrants are ok same people who rally against gets in cages are now many thinking about everything be fine, and I just hope that we can create enough, like awareness, that people understand that we still have to push and that I really think that we're gonna have a lot more progress and and the things
not gonna, be like under these Trump administration, but also that things are now going to be perfect, that we're still gonna have detention centres and people driving down the street and getting poured over for a speedy and ticket and getting deported the only way that that's going to stop is if we as progressives or people who care about energy, and are willing to also hold accountable democratic president. I really hope that the public is there. those folks who were railing against kissing cages that that their continued to rally with us we'll see how things evolve, we'll drive back.

We first spoke to surround about you back in the summer she's, the thirty six year old activist, who had been organizing as a part of the black lives matter movement for years? When we spoke,
movement was newly energized by the ongoing protests and the outpouring of support following the police killing of George Floyd. Then a national conversation shifted to the alert. seven and the pandemic. We wanted to see The Biden administration felt like a new opportunity for the movement. You know, I think what is interesting is that many of the activist I have gotten to know and spend time with Definite Lee were hoping for a more progressive candidate to at the top of the democratic ticket, and we ended up with Joe Biden and so binding for many of us is a compromise. He is a moderate by all accounts in Ireland first rate, but we definitely understood that it was critically important that he be elected to reducing the harm experienced by so many of us, our families and other
members of our community surrender and many of her fellow activists also have complicated feelings about common Harris, namely because of her experience and law enforcement. A friend of mine made me a customize pair of tens that say comma across the bay. I dont know where, if I will ever wear them, but I own them right because they represent this moment and they represent what she represents to so many of us complicated or not, but they also see the potential for greater opportunity with heroin, than with Biden. I would much rather organise push and sway and educate her. I think there is real hope that she will move. I think she is demonstrated and openness to learning, and I also think that she, like many people of color right who have worked in law enforcement, are trying in this particular moment, to reconcile within for themselves what that means.
Yeah. What do you want? The administrations first hundred days to look like who'll? Listen, I've thought about it. I will be fully transparent and I will say that I dont think that by it and gave us much to vote for, I think trunk gave us a lot to vote. against. I don't think I'm saying anything new original here right when I say that we have watched Donald Trump, provide legitimacy and political cover for violent extremists. So often in other media will talk about. While there was a b l in protest and counter protest and you're like that's, not a that's. Nice is not the same, and I think because
So much of the public conversation has been framed as two sides with two different world views. The ideas of the far infringe right that have been made legitimate because there is the sense that you can enacts racial violence and that the state has your back and we have seen it. I think you know, especially in the last four years, is just its created for me anyway. The just over well make sense that people feel and power two harmony and don't feel like there will be any real consequences if they do. This belief is why surrender worries about the safety of the incoming administration. It's a worry, that's been with her essentially the moment button was elected. I felt relief and tried very hard to sit with that for a moment, and then I felt almost any media censorship of dread.
Chiefly because I was worried about what the backlash would look like from the right, and I was worried about the increased scrutiny to which comma would be subjected, and I think it's probably a feeling that was most again to the sea awaiting I experienced when Obama was elected in o eight dislike me and we just made history and also I'm so afraid for this person, and I feel that for common every time- see her, can you talk a little bit about where that fear comes from yeah, in the fear that I'm describing rightness fear of you know your history maker, your trailblazer, what are they going to do to you?
You know really comes from the history of black people in this country right. Every time we have broken a barrier every time we have tried to stand up for our humanity. Every time we have tried to fully participate in this society. Are examples of very real and violent pushed back from people who have believed that we should stay in our place so to speak, and I even if you listen to you know the ways that we talk about particularly women who were trailblazers. I think all of the messages we get around that are, if you dare try and be the first of anything right, we are going to pick you apart and I think that's especially
true for black women and women of color. What are you most worried about? As you look ahead to the Biden administration, I'm really really nervous that we are going to attempt to appease the people who I did at the capital and that those of us who have experienced real harm and real violence, specifically over the past four years, will be asked in the name of reconciliation, tend not bring up that harm right and to not hold accountable. The people who committed that harm against us, and you have already spoken about some of your hopes for the administration. But I'm wondering what are your hopes for yourself. Honestly, I am hopeful that I find myself less angry on a regular occurrence. step basis, I have already passed
