The Field: The Specter of Political Violence

2020-10-29

This episode contains strong language.

With an election in which uncertainty may abound, concerns are swirling around the possibility of political violence. Experts and officials — including those charged with the security of polling stations and ballot counting facilities — have been taking extra precautions.

Americans across the political spectrum appear to be preparing themselves for this possibility, too: Eight of the 10 biggest weeks for gun sales since the late 1990s took place since March this year. Many of those sales were to people buying guns for the first time.

Today’s episode examines these anxieties from two perspectives.

Andy Mills, a senior audio producer for The New York Times, speaks to patrons of gun stores in Washington State about their motivations and sits down with a first-time gun owner who relays his anxiety, ignited by the unrest and protests in Seattle over the summer.

And Alix Spiegel, a senior audio editor for The Times, visits three women of color in North Carolina, one of whom says the scenes in Charlottesville, the killing of Black people at the hands of the police and the threat of white militias have encouraged her to shift her anti-gun stance.

Guests: Andy Mills, a senior audio producer for The New York Times; Alix Spiegel, a senior audio editor for The Times; and Reid J. Epstein, who covers campaigns and elections for The Times.

It feels like a life and death situation Really, I think if Biden wins, the you know the proud boys are going to come out. If Trump wins. I think that's where we going to have a massive problem, it's really all up in the air. I don't know, what's going to happen
just don't know who's gonna, be president and what's gonna happen afterwards. The year arming yourself just in case From the New York Times, this is the field I Molly Spiegel in North Carolina, and I'm Andy Mills in Washington State partially ranging you wanna go your way either come across. I can talk if you want so I have spent the last couple weeks. I guess well following the started talking to people who are concerned about really bad things happening around the election. So a couple weeks ago, India and I caught up our colleague greed Epstein on the politics desk. We ve been here,
about concerns whirling around the possibility of violence around this year's presidential election and we were all trying to better understand what that was about. I talk to academics and people would think tanks and corporate security consultants. so red had gotten on the phone with all sorts of different professionals. People who are in charge of keeping polling places safe and maintaining security at facilities were there actually gonna count about the sort of check the Also all these different people, people who monitored domestic extremist groups, former State Department of Homeland Security officials, whose job it is to think about stuff like this. And were saying that extra precautions position to before my there certainly is, is more emphasis on security. a lot of people were very concerned that if there is not a decisive result action day or the day after election day in theirs weeks of
Certainly that follows that there could be a problem or that, the losing side. Mounds, some sort of major protest events. There is a concern that something violent could happen and allow these people that I talk to are either making contingency plans urging others to make contingency plans to be prepared in case things, go haywire, and there was this other thing- reed had been hearing about something much more tangible, eight out of ten biggest weeks for gun sales, since the late nineties in the United States have come since March of this year. Since the start of the covered lockdown in the. U S, gun sales had been breaking records united it's not uncommon for gun sales to go up before president. election. That happened both before and after Morocco. Burma was first elected in two thousand and eight
This time around. Not only is it conservatives who might be fearful that new president might take their guns away, but a lot of folks from across the local spectrum who are arming themselves for the first time in his country. whoa, I just say a collective well. And so we set out to learn more about this group of people who were buying guns. For the first time, people on the left and people on the right track test. This is Andy Mills in Seattle, Washington, I am standing today outside of guns, store, called Linwood Gun, just north of the city proper, alongside a pretty busy highway, and out in front of the sword, there are several people lined up
way to go in and I'm gonna see, if any of them will talk to me, my basic questions. Why wait here money so a couple weeks ago, I spent several days earlier two different gun shops on the outskirts of Seattle. Are you by chance newer gun owners? I've done since I was twelve years old, People in these long lines. Have you noticed that uptake at all and newer gun ownership over the past few months? Yes, it's hundredfold. Everyone is and right away, I was seeing it Actually, what Rita just told us very far it's time for a new, Gunnar S, you questions about why a ton of first time. Gun buyers have always believed in the second amendment, but I ve learned felt the need to have again and an incredibly diverse group of people see
give you noted that I've seen and people give I've seen african people? Liberals erotic Are you gonna give it our views of defining suffers politically laughter, politically right? laughter, libertarian, sometimes I would say politically centre, meaning to the right some of the left and some of it to the right right, but I'm not on the far right in ordinary pray in front Godsend earlier, some that, like the president, of overriding some. That did not want to go for an hour like drum, but we have a generation tat. our kids some who were not first, I'm gonna owners, but who were thinking guns very differently in this matter. guns for years, but I just recently for the first time purchase and I are rifle partly because it what's Goin on I came to Seattle to hear from people who were out buying guns specifically because they,
worried about the possibility of violence from the political left. I think the left, while they talk what about freedom and rights in this and that I think, they're more oppressive. I think they're more closed minded. The left claims that the right intolerant and the right would say the left is becoming intolerant. you have an opposing opinion than yours. how racially motivate, every year, a right wing echo. What what particularly do you point to say this is raising our concern: riots, urban! I accept that start spreading out into the suburbs. I'm gonna be in a position to defend myself and my home and family here in the Seattle area. A lot of people pointed to what
happened in the region. Over the summer. We have a lot of suburban eight people that have seen looting assaults you no stopping of people's party damage. I mean burning up of staff, we're protests turned and riots in Seattle City Council moved to defend their police department, further, create anarchy and for a time a group of protesters actually took over a section of the city. This isn't a bunch, a hippie smoke and open listening to music Woodstock. These are armed, Dane violent people that are destroying property, they dont have good intentions. There, not they're, not improving society, and they said that day I saw this as one of the most flagrant version of the law. You're trend that was happening throughout the country Bob mentality. When you see groups of people showing up it
missions, homes or even the chief of police is home, makes some of the average people fear that, if their opinions or Positions are well regarded that they are going to have a mob outside their home. What positions or opinions do you feel like you're not being allowed right now for anybody who speaks positively against Trump, which, for the record, I'm not I'm bored with Trump a hundred percent, but are you rate if you speak out positively afore him you demonized you're, basically, its cancelled culture cannot be lobbying hired for what they say here and there, like your out of your white, wherefore it where everything privilege and were automatically the KKK. They don't like your opinion, though, go after your livelihood. Their got your work situation will make you I've miserable to get their way and that's escalated to the point where it might not just be somebody judging you, but it might be something where you need to defend yourself. Absolutely,
I gotta go to the grocery store. Unama can have some a writ me out of the car. Put a gun at my face You ve got to the point where you're nervous that there are fractions of the left. That would do something like that. I would say so you when you say it's: ok, to punch a Nazi, and then you paint the other guy as a nazi and then boom, it's okay to kill a nazi. You know what I mean. and then when you're hero did I I don't want it to happen. Hopefully there and have the guts We are living amongst basement, but these are you so now. I think that they are pushing for a contested election so that they can ferment civil war
I don't ever want to shoot anybody man, but you know to protect myself and my mom and my dog, and I guess, if someone is trying to get into harmless, I would It's a pleasure one of those anxious people that I met in one of those lines. Actually let me go over to his place right so so, where do you keep against its? By are bad
to explain a little bit more about what it was that brought him out to the gun, store, accommodation and dumb timed it, and I can basically take it out loaded and theoretically, aim it in ten seconds. So far, none of you practices in I have. I got a security consultant to come here and he's off You know one of the trainers at the range and ass. You know he was like practices like even five minutes a day will really add up. So this is one of the things I practiced. What kind of gun is it so it's in a are fifty aunt, em
one is sort of. I would say to him like a middle, the road price point the dealer talked about how you know, if you, if you spend x ray, will ask logger and sort of in the mood that I bought, I didn't feel like cost was an object. It's got your classic iron sites and your optics. He had just purchased and a our fifteen as semi automatic rifle. What the inner re actually calls America's popular rightful there's the bolt action is supposedly more durable. I'm definitely the wrong person ask about these thanks, though you're still learning. I have very much very much.
Can. You are load the gun and show me how it works. Sure, absolutely so. You'd have to standard procedures that you ve got the gun and the ruddy position, which can be either angled slightly upward or slightly downward. We want upward for loading the gun, and so I put back the charging handle lock it back in and so now we're just going to take out the clip we inserted tug to make sure it actually stated and now press that he live round is in the chamber. Safety still on. I was pretty quick fix yeah. It says that you ve been practicing. Will my structure will be pleased? I've enjoyed learning about it. Let me help you pick up these boats. He put his gun back in. It's safe before we move on to another. You wanna, keep something's private
What would you becomes a little more about with your education in your ear professional life? I I thought about this because I didn't want identify myself too much and we walked over to his living room. I currently I will say this, I work and tat. You know that doesn't narrowed down much in Seattle, but I think that sort of being identified as having sort of any right, leaning, beliefs right now and especially owning a gun. I would be very afraid of losing my job if that became public and after explaining that he was nervous,
about possible consequences of sharing his story. He began to lay out how it is. He came to be so anxious about this political moment. Can we just start at the beginning? Where did you grow up and what was your experience like in your home around politics and specifically around guns sure I grew up in a kind of all over the MID West, but mostly rural South Dakota Rural Minnesota. My parents are both highly educated. You know least, sort a very liberal four, where we lived at the time now that I live in Seattle, I think about a little differently but they were always sort of the Democrats in arguments with the rest of the republican family at Thanksgiving. I definitely have some memories of that. He said that, even though he knew lots of conservatives, he and his family were in line
with the political left. You know gay marriage. You know that is a very important issue for me. I still believe that sort of there should be a single pair government option. Healthcare like I think that would be a good for this country, including issues about governance, father and my mother- and I like we all believed in gun control and my dad still doesn't own a pistol every gun, the nuances, a hunting gun, my dad loved hunting. He would take me hunting and fishing as a kid and damn you know when we thought about gun control. It's like well Why do you need you know? Why might you need a pistol like? Why am I do need the air fifteen that I own now. Definitely you know that would have been something that we didn't want. Love me through, as you got older first, like how you
show yourself politically, as you kind of came into your own and whether or not guns played any role in that along the way. Sure sure I definitely identified as Democrat. The first time I was eligible to vote was the two thousand and eight election, and I voted for Barack Obama. I definitely identified as a Democrat. I mean really honestly until this whole covered thing came about, is up to this point. He's basically been in alignment with all of the big progressive issues, but when it came to the handling of the corona virus, I will say that I think the initial shut down there's a really case to be made for it. I dont think I would have done it, but we didn't have any mass. We didn't have any testing. How else are you gonna try to check the spread of the virus?
yes, I think by June, though we had masks and we had testing, and yet people are still arguing for locked out, and I, like you know, can we at least let young people. back to work. He just disagreed with fee, convey general thinking, and he felt that there wasn't really any place for him to give voice to that. When I would say things like this or when other people would say things like this, it dad that the response was always like. You are not enough. already that we trust and I'd say, ok, but there are other authorities, you know who are saying things, I'm saying and there like hope. We don't trust the meter and I'm like okay, so you know he's being authority really the problem or is it just not saying what you wanna hear? That's the problem, that's what it felt like a guess, as the covert locked down are happening, you're fighting yourself feeling, like your arguing with people who usually feel
more like political allies. Definitely I mean numb Unita, I've, a group of really close friends and the discussion last year is Bernie the right candidate. Are there any other candidates who are good enough for us and dumb I'm one of two in the group, the other who has the same training that I do we're both questioning their the covert stuff? He says that part of all this is that as the lock down war on the effect of a lockdown. This thing that he didn't even agree with in the first place, he started to feel it, I'm a very introverted person, and so honestly, for the first month you are yet I feel great eyes like while I don't have to commute to work like I have all this time, but I think that the isolation sort of did get to me
It took me longer than most, but it did get to me and when he started talking about this with one of his friends and like you know, it's driving me crazy and I just feel trapped in a he said he was going through. The same stuff is like an I'm feeling, a lot of stress he's like, but what I find myself getting caught in it he's like. I force myself to turn it into an this friend suggested that you know he find some way to take back some concern. his life. You know now, when I realized, unlike all like, I have lost my sense of individual power. recommended to him that he consider buying a firearm at? So I made the decision to a gun, and so that was the plan and then George Floyd died. The death of George Floyd started peacefully, but his turn very destructive tonight than there were riots and see my way
and I ve got a notification. The city set out a mass text. There was like there's a curfew in effect for like what's this about, when my wife starts checking your phone and she's like their rights downtown here,. Admiral demonstrators through Molotov cocktails cars and buildings, causing multiple fires, some through fireworks into peaceful crowds and police. From his perspective, these protests in Seattle we're terrifying. We looked up where was sort of like half mile from where we used to live swarms of people. probably damage here. There's injuries and clashes with the Seattle Police Department. Just like a cough car was, I totally trashed There were police, but they were taking like defensive positions. They were like afraid to engage this crowd,
police are not thirty feet away. Maybe sixty keeping the line of protesters back firefighters, work, firefighters, these burning, these burning cruisers. Nobody is intervening. People enter this business here I mean it. is the word that comes to mind is anarchy, just like a total loss of order. Do I realized, and with you for riot happens, you are essentially on our own. We have reports of multiple officers and civilians injury that night. That Saturday, night sort of you know, after my wife and I were watching this unfold totally- it night. You know I lay in dead and I about what would happen if, like someone just laid blew up the front of our house like they bought up the front storefront suggest storm. Then I just thought about
how bad it would feel if that happened in my wife were heard or killed, and I haven't done anything to prepare for it there like well, I need a gun that can handle a riot so first thing in the morning I just dumb, like I called the place, took me a while the sort of get a human. They were very busy that day and there lay there like look like you, gotta hurry. We have a big step in the car and I just you know, drove out at Bellevue. That's where I got my gun, that's what I practice now and that's where I met you so at first He says it s really think that much about it, you can't just again there's a two week, usually to equating period while the background checks are run. So I was like
like there's really nothing to worry about. This is probably just gonna like collect dust, and that's ok. You know it's like now. I have it. I've checked that box and I can I can stop worrying, but it's just after he buys this gun. This issue at all, so called Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone several blocks of the city now taken over by protesters. That's when the protesters take control of that section of Seattle, a section that actually turns out to be just a few miles away from this house. After today's of violent clashes between police and the protesters. Officers retreated from the area to de escalate attention affectively abandoning their station in from his perspective. Just like me, the other people who had met in these lines in front a gun stores. This was a step beyond what he thought was even possible. In America breaking news in these, so called Capitol Hill Organise protest, so there's been yet another shooting early this morning. Protest or no so eventually, of course,

The mayor felt obliged to you now ended in and send in the police took to break it up after several weeks it it took a while, but there was still talk of defining the police, and all of this just left me wondering like what is going on. I have many times I wondered if I overreacted and dumb I'm still sitting on. No, it's definitely possible, but a five overreact. But I'm not alone, I mean. I know several people who have have told me like here when the City Council said there In addition, the police, I I went out and got a firearm- what's keep you up at night at this point, just that it could happen again like when the election occurs. It
Just feels lake, whatever laden craziness was there, you know exploded before could explode again, when you are practising Shooting you re are when who are doing these maneuvers in your bedroom. Where you see how fast you can load it and have it ready, who props into your mind, is being on the other side of that gun?. The thing that I most as I see them coming through the front door, which is maybe kind of dumb I'm picturing, I'm picturing, a mixed race group so like definite combination of white and black people and damn after seeing the riots yeah, I'm where their left wing. That's that's what I'm saying
It really sounds crazy to talk about civil war in this country like a bug it enough. It can happen here. Famous last words. Unlike what business do I have with the gun, so it's like having to get past that they were going to a gun training it something none of them ever expected to be doing you of the three women Nicky was the only one who had any familiarity with guns at all. She had done if I says mixed race and politically independent, but she grew up
in a rural community and her family, which is mostly white, is extremely conservative and owns guns, and she told me the things she has been hearing from them recently really put her on edge. There's so much fear, like my friends and I loved ones, are so afraid because they feel like once the election happens like they're gonna, be riots in the street,
blogger and interest boiling breaking down people's doors in their business. It is in their reaction to fear, sometimes is violence and that scary to me, are you afraid of what will happen with the election? I already know that shit's gonna pop off after the election, like I don't know that afraid, is the word just because I think everybody is just preparing you know when you see when, when you see people who are legitimately talking about another civil war like and not one or two people, but like truly quite a few people, if it's a waste heavy, unlike my spirit and by us all so, countrymen was Emory.
