Hey. What's goin on everybody, welcome to the daily social distancing,
I'm sure, vanilla. It is true today August Eighteenth, which means we are
only seventy six days away from the election and only a hundred and sixty days from knowing who one. Now, as you know, yesterday was there
one of the Democratic National convention, and if you didn't have time to watch all two hours, will we then bring you all of the highlights, just like we ve promised so
Let's do this, people welcome to the daily social distancing, show Fervors Couch in New York City to your account somewhere daily social distancing, show bruising democratic national Convention, unlocking America's president's now every convention is not just about a fish
picking the nominee. It's also about telling a story about what the party represents and from the get go last night, it was clear that the Democrats we're trying to
trade themselves as the Party of diversity, unity and also patriotism, the show kicked off with people of every
Race, ethnicity and gender reciting, the constitution, then the pledge of
agents and then singing the national anthem after which they were ominously,
trapped inside and american flag, assuming the only way to set them free is
electing Joe Biden as President. I think that's how the spell works wrecked, and I mean it's clear why the Democrats have to lay the patriotism on so thick because between
testing, police brutality and kneeling during the anthem. The Republicans have tried to make it seem like Democrats, don't love America just because they criticise it so long. I get why democratic trying to fight that perception.
If I'm gonna be honest, you're never gonna beat Trump. When it comes to symbolic patriotism, I mean yeah you're, singing the anthem, but any time from even sees a flag. You trust the shit out of it now after
minutes of patriotism. Porn the show heard from a number of everyday Americans from the Shrink state of Pennsylvania all the way to the other parts of Pennsylvania, business,
talked about their struggles during covert and troll forges talked about why they stopped supporting him. They also had an appearance by the family of George Floyd, who talked about the need to fight systemic
racism, one of the most powerful moments early in the show came from a woman whose trumps supporting father died from covered. Nineteen, I'm Chris dinner keys.
I am one of the many who has lost a ones are covered. My dad mark, Anthony or Chiesa should be here today, but he isn't. He had faith and Donald Trump. He voted for him.
Listen to him, believed him and his mouth pieces when they said that quota virus was under control and going to disappear. My dad went to a karaoke bar with his friends a few weeks later he was put on event later.
And after five agonizing days he died alone. His only pray
This thing condition was trusting Donald Trump, one of the last things that my father said to me was that he felt betrayed by the likes of Donald Trump. While there was absolutely scathing as she's
Believing Donald Trump is truly one of the most harmful things you can do, and that was that was even before he was president
I mean just ask Atlantic City his first two wives,
any graduate Trump University degree
was made of asbestos, but after hearing
from some regular Americans. It was time to hear from America's weirdest Americans, politicians and one of the biggest speakers of the night was Republican John,
basic, the former governor of Ohio and Guy who's, always
months away from meeting the Heimlich maneuver, he crossed party lines to warn his fellow Republicans about the cost of supporting Trump America's at a crossroads
times elections represent a real choice, a choice we make as individuals and as a nation about which path we want it to
when we ve come to challenging times. America is at the core.
Roads today, the stakes in this election are greater than any in modern times men
thus have been deeply concerned about the current path we ve been following for the past four years is a path
but the division, dysfunction, irresponsibility and growing vitriol between our citizens. Continuing to follow that path.
We'll have terrible consequences for America Soul, because we're b
taken down the wrong road by a president who is pitted one against the other he's, unlike all of our best leaders,
before him who work to unite us to bridge our differences and leave us to it
knighted America, while how creative America is at a crossroads and he standing at a crossroads, I wonder if that was intentional
I'm just glad that case it. When will the safe metaphor like America is at a crossroads, because
would have gone with a much more dangerous one
guys in applying that's unfounded rag and the only power should have been thrown out of the way. Maybe the bad idea, no understandably lot of progressive Warren
happy to see the deep sea giving a time to a Republican who doesn't share the parties values. But at the same time many people in Democratic Party argue that
Order to defeat Trump, they need to broaden their appeal to windows, crucial swing states that gave Trump the White House and twenty sixteen. So if it means teaming up with Anti Trump Republicans, then so be it, and you will discover reminds me of it- reminds me of God's Zilla like
You remember how we hated gods and because he loves smashing our ship, but then DORA showed up and he didn't want just measure should he wanted to destroy the entire planet so than us humans. We had to team up with guns Zilla to take on the door and who would have thought we'd be with guns, Zella,
We gave him a speaking as one of the convention, but it was worth it because he smashes ship, but we ve got a planet. I'm sorry, I've been watching tuning we'd movies during quarantine, but don't get a twisted case. It may have spoken at the convention, but the prime slots reserve for the democratic heavy hitters, including the oh gee, Progressive himself, Bernie, so
together. We must build a nation that is more equitable, more compassionate and more inclusive. I know that Joe Biden we'll begin that fight
on day. One Joe supports raising the minimum wage that fifteen dollars an hour, Joe will read.
Build our crumbling infrastructure and fight the threat of climate change.
Transitioning us to one hundred percent clean electricity over the next fifteen years, Joe Biden will end the hate and division tromp has created and then
We can finally go back to the hate and division that existed before Trump. You know the regular hate under vision, not this crazy shook with the red hats on the boats. What the hell is that I'm really impressed with
Saunders because he's doing everything in his power right now to take down Donald Trump
only. Is he giving a full throated endorsement of Joe Biden, but the men state up until ten o clock to give that speech? That's not nothing and bodies. Point was very clear. He was telling his base that progressive cannot afford to cost protest votes
like they didn't twenty. Sixteen, because this should we lived through. This was four years of transport,
caring about being reelected mention what he did
totally unleashed forget pardoning other people. Second term troubling
pardoning himself mid crime he'll, be out there rubbing banks like
Eddie, I'm gonna need you to get on the ground pardoned. This is a robbery
The money in the bag pardoned and ran away,
I love your boobs pardon burdened, so the thrust of the night was clear. People across the ideological spectrum need to unite against Donald Trump, and by and large, I'm pretty impressed. I mean a virtual convention has never happened.
But the Democrats were able to string together appearances from all around the country from John K, sick in a field somewhere to Bernie.
And is giving a speech in a cabin where he clearly murdered groups entire family and stack them in the background, but don't get me wrong them. I didn't go entirely smoothly
I'm guardsmen Jim clobbering here
start good evening.
Cars when Jim clobbering
hello, America, the price of failure is just too great to imagine. Thank you.
I see what
When I hear this was smart of the Democrats trying to make it see
like they have the same. Embarrassing tech issues as Regular Americans very relatable and you gonna feel better Bernie Sanders man an awkwardly timed applause.
Would any speech, no matter how good it is, not
what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country now. The truth is nobody,
members all the glitches and the bad timing, because all anybody was talking about today was the Democrats closer former, firstly and walking Vision Board Michelle
Obama understand that my message won't be heard by some people.
We live in a nation that is deeply divided and I am a black woman. Speaking at the democratic convention.
But enough of you know me by now. You know that
Tell you exactly what I'm feeling you know. I hate politics, but
You also know that I care about this nation.
Within one hundred and fifty thousand people have died and our economy
is in shambles because of a virus that this president downplayed for too long. Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country.
He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly
over his head. He can not meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need
to be for us. It is what it is. All that was ice.
Old and what made it even more devastating
Michelle Obama wasn't angry. She wasn't yelling she's stated trumps, complete failure as president as an obvious fact
and what's the difference between your mom screaming at you and your mom just casually sipping,
coffee and going will? Not all kids can be winners, and you know another thing:
I appreciated about Michel speech.
That shouldn't Shane people right in the last few years. It's been pretty standard in politics to shame people who don't agree with you and don't intend to vote like you,
and a lot of it is fuelled by the toxicity of online culture and how divided the country's right now, but instead of doing that
showing knowledge. There are people who don't want
to hear what she has to say and then she respectfully and
honestly engage with those who might want to listen to her and asked them to back. Button
That's what made her speech so brilliant in a way it's almost unfair, but the Obama family was blessed with true charismatic public art
they give great speech it all the time it gets nothing? And then you are Trump who acts like he disk
makes, and so we have these accomplishments. Chaise and accomplishments show true what a word. Now. It's not surprised. Donald Trump wasn't as impressed by Michel speech.
By Michel speech, but the reason why was pretty surprising,
He was over her head and, frankly, she should have made a speech live, which you didn't. Do she taped it, and it was not only take two escaped a long time ago because she had the wrong deaths. God damn that is one of the biggest self owns. I have ever seen a hundred and fifty thousand. Dare I killed twenty dozen more chance? Then you idiot airmen get allowed of this area men. So that's how
Democrats kicked off their convention and if Democrats can get some more speeches like Michel Obama's well, let us just a man
of time before America terms Donald Trump into Donald dumped.

works. If you yourself on working on the inside, and I think we do take for granted as people, you know just meditating, just taking a moment to breathe getting

I'm not good! I give my full self right so that work one
we cannot deny. Is America especially, is really good at convincing people that being healthy is expensive?
and it's really good at making unhealthy choices, the cheaper ones. You know if you come from a poor community if you come from from poorer household
look easier to reach for a bag of chips? Are what luck easier to only eat fast food, nothing wrong with having at once in a while, but some people are trapped in the cycle, and I wondered if, like you, you know if, if
you ve been tackling this. Will you looking to tackle this in the series in saying like how do we,
just in a world where, maybe you know a ghetto gardens, you were talking about four inches like how do we
In a world where we get people to the place where it's like you, you may not have money to do the fancy things that that a lot of people used to stay healthy, but there are simple, cheap.
Things that can help maintain your health as well. Well, I mean this. This shows is geared towards, but are we really breaking down like a raw love where you'll have the habit,

we deserve that now feel like. That is one of the data held elevators that helps us feel better about ourselves
I feel like you, VE, always been about elevation. You know, I wonder what new
hope to achieve by performing at the Democratic National convention. I know you won't be one of the people whose performing you take a performance is really see
you try and pick the song that has a message and you trying to get something across. What do you think people need to hear the most right now that you are trying to give them well
at the Democratic national convention. We performed this all glory. Gelatine legend, I like the song is about, say: hey. We were
and in their ways and in the steps of doktor king and of women and men of civil rights movement. We are today want to bring people together by extract in order the negative energy and not even like, put now mind towards that.
But really focused on how we can come together, how we gonna uplift each other, how like weakest bread loved each other. In that fight
man, I'm a fighter made up. There are no. You know I talk about love fight, we love to mean I'm not like lightning caught, him might come back
the leadership that we have in there now is going out and doing for four people doing front of people and bringing and like
so may bring an awareness about voting in voting for the right people travel about here, like I'm, I'm educate myself right now on, like a lot of candidates to run down and take a slightly stairs, so I'm gonna do states in

Welcome back to the daily social distancing show earlier today I spoke with New York Times: editor Veronica Chambers. We talk
about the one hundredth anniversary of american women, getting the vote and about her new book on the suffrage movement. Veronica chambers
welcome to the daily social distancing, show you its needs to be socially distancing for me
I really appreciate appreciate having you on the show, because you ve done,
thing that I honestly think is one of the most crucial things over and that is writing a book. The teaches people about history and, although you written produce
gleeful middle school is, I feel, like everyone should read this book, because it's about the suffragists,
You know the Suffrage movement in America. It's about women fighting for the right to vote. But what I find interesting is that it tells a pot of history that is often times overlooked. Why did you think this book was so crucial
well about a year and a half ago, maybe a little more. We were thinking
new. The anniversary of the Nineteenth amendment was coming up and we kind of
in a room at the New York Times, and he said what do we know and it turned
man alive, and so the idea of writing the middle escaped with a good middle great book was really from that thing that journalists do, which is like explain it to me like I was a ten year old and if you can explain, it
When, like make your tenure old, you really actually have to learn a lot to do still it and that's what we did in it: a kind of shaped everything
pleading other the coverage we're doing now. I want my one thing that I really find interesting in the way you wrote about their stories, as they seem
bad ass. You know like normally when you read about the suffrage movement, it gets
sometimes can be portrayed as like, and they asked for the right to vote and they asked again and they asked again but
to portray them as rarely tactical geniuses in politics. One of the first things we did is we had a round table.
Historians and one of them Caitlin me from the Smithsonian she was like suffrage needs a real right. This is not a boring history. These are bad asp,
little strategists, who worked for ninety years to get the job done and that stuck in my hat.
I really try to let that infused writing in it. I really fell in love with these women. I have to tell you they thus became like my heroes and
I couldn't believe that I didn't go up knowing about them. This book is about the women who fought for their right to vote. It's also a story which is really difficult of how women
fought for the right to vote, but not all of those women were treated equally when the vote was was that was given to women. Tell me a little bit more about that. We need in this region
he really has its history, an abolition, the movement and slavery, and then the civil war comes and the fifteenth amendment is up and they decide to push for a black man to get the vote before white women and, quite frankly,
You know we have a sort of cultural moment of Terence the current of the nineties.
Century were not having it basically like how dare these
men who are just off plant agents, get the right to build before us and merely sets up a pecking order that we see today, which is you know: white Man, white women, black men, black women and there's a cash, and it really breaks apart the movement and its difficult, and it sets the tone
for a lot, but I will say that I think that what Kimberly Crenshaw set about black women showing up and showing out you see it's so much in the history as early as each intends. Eighteen, twenty years before, Seneca falls black women are giving speed.
She's about women's rights and the motto lifting as we climb is really about opening the doors wide, as you can get it for as many people
you can get it. You know Susan, be Anthony. There's somebody
So many people look up to undergo like man if it weren't for her women wouldn't have
right to vote, and this was wonderful, but she does have a complicated history as
journalist and as a writer, how did you
try and navigate that story of somebody who has done something amazing, but also has extra
problematic use and try to hold other people back well. That was definitely
you hit the nail on the head in terms of one of the challenges, but one of the things that I thought Milly strongly for
I remember sitting at a meeting in someone said we should do a chapter costs. Isn't the Anthony is cancelled and I was like you're, not cancelling people. Think I'm like we're just not like it
the weapon. So whatever I mean, the fact is that she dedicated her whole life,
to let the movement text along.
One woman who find that Seneca five lived to vote and nineteen twenty one. This movement up,
I think that you know we just have to say some people have problems, and I think we can hold a more complicated. Do now. Approve
keep them for what they did and now that they have problems, and, hopefully teacher kids to learn from that. You know. I really think that from a grateful kids to see themselves because, yes, you have white women
fighting for the right to vote, but they joined by black women who are fighting for the rights of all who, as you should inspire much of the movement you also
asian women who are fighting for the right to vote. You have let next women who are fighting for the right to vote and it really does paint a more much as diverse but but really like super here.
Picture of this, this band of people who fought in different ways.
For this right. Do you think it's important for us to do
friend the story and tell it with all of the color excuse, the pun,
that a truly deserves think about diversities ticking boxes, but merely when you get into
story of these women of color and suffrage. They are really future ass. They are thinking about not to some cells, but other generations
Sixteen year old, Mabel Ping wildly led one of the largest suffrage parades in history, knowing that the Chinese, its lesion act meant that she herself would not be able to build an ancient twenty. The suffragists who were futurists were thinking not just about themselves, not to spot the ground, and that's what I tried to teach my daughter, her friends is, you know you don't have to have like likes to be about ass. You just have to do the right thing.
Milk and we listen to your heart and try to help people. You know when kids are reading a book. What would you like them to taken apply to today? What would you hope that they try and inspire themselves to think about for tomorrow, because many of them will go well, everyone can vote so I guess the job is done. What would you hope that they gonna from this
