OPRAH WINFREY: THE MAP

How many times have you witnessed someone get close to achieving a goal, only to see it suddenly fall apart? Or they reach the top of the mountain but can’t seem to hold on. Maybe you too have struggled with near-misses and dreams that didn’t quite materialize. Self-sabotage can be a devastating cycle. Oprah believes the variable between winning the race and faltering at the finish line lies with one of the guiding forces in her life: Intention. She says, “Those who sense your truth and your authenticity will rise up to support you. But most importantly you must believe with your whole heart that you are capable of achieving your goal. So first ask yourself Why? What is the real intention? Then ask: How will I execute the action?” In this podcast, Oprah sits down with such legendary spiritual teachers and writers as Gary Zukav, Gabrielle Bernstein, Brené Brown, Stephen Colbert, David Brooks, President Joe Biden (VP at the time) Marianne Williamson, Daniel Pink, Carole Bayer Sager, Cheryl Strayed, Reverend Michael Beckwith, Meagan Good, Devon Franklin, Janet Mock and Goldie Hawn. They share their own personal trajectories and the inner map they followed which led them to the ultimate fulfillment of their dreams. Interviews with these talented writers, speakers and thought leaders are excerpted from Oprah’s Emmy Award-winning show Super Soul Sunday. You can also find this compilation and other insightful conversations, in Oprah’s best-selling book The Path Made Clear.

It's beyond. as for the interview with the reporter who asked about naysayers, I went on to tell her dump against me. You can't defeat someone who knows where they truly are. I know who I am,
and why I'm doing this? So I would not bet against me. Moment you know with certainty. your intention is fully aligned with what you believe all bets are off you already one eye everyone to know everyone is entitled to miracles that everyone is that miracles occur. Naturally, as of course, Mercosur miracles occur naturally, and when they're not occurring something has gone wrong. We have the capacity to lose the way we have the capacity to earn the money. We have the capacity to live a far greater life than we perceive we do, but we have to make that decision. We have to exercise that free will and make that country choice to see them? How do you get miracles to show up what we have to begin to release all that's blocking the presence of those miracles, so we build up a wall against those miracles, and so we need to start
take down that wall. One loving thought at the time one superstar Sunday episode in the time one book at a time when prayer at a time when yoga classes time, whatever our practices, is what takes down. While and helps us remember, I can't emphasise enough or agree with you more than when your heart is open and willing things just start to show up. Isn't it amazing one book shows up than another book shows up in something else shows up, and then somebody says protein yoga classrooms evasive in ITALY alone. What you need everything you need you will be given that the other thing is that it's ok, like that's the other message I think we all need to receive is that everything will be ok if you choose for it to be. If you choose to see things differently, your
job and my job while we are in the early school, is to align our personalities with ourselves, and we do that by becoming the personality that has the same intentions of the soul, harmony in cooperation and sharing and reverence for life. Suppose, for example, your mother and you ve got through children and you aren't overwhelm alot right, and one of the children in particular is a been demanding. Now you have a husband,
and he's been working away all day away from home. He may or may not be sympathetic or even appreciative of how much work it is to be at home, with three children and to prepare for him coming home, so you can find yourself overwhelm you find yourself frustrated our exasperated by the child and most demanding confine yourself angry at your husband. What do you do? This is exactly the time that you have the opportunity to create authentic power and here's how you do it first of all, instead of acting whatever the impulses to tell the child, Tommy be quiet, be. Why are you gonna go to your room for six months or telling your husband, whatever you telling, instead go inside, though in cycle inside that's the first step that is developing
emotional awareness, the second step, and once you can do this, you put yourself in a very powerful position, because, just by turning inwards, instead of acting in the moment, you have created a little gap between them, often the action and enter that space. You can inject cautiousness into that space. You can do something you couldn't have done before to consciously you can decide. I am going to say this to my husband he's insensitive and I'm sick and tired of being sensitive or I'm not or I'm goin. Instead to act from the most lovely.
part of my personality that I can reach for in that moment here, and it may be that the most loving part of your personality can reach for is just not to say anything, but you have then changed your universe. Yes, it's your choice and you make the choice every time, You choose an intention when you choose an intention of love instead of an intention of fear, and that is this virtual journey. That is the spiritual journey. That is the spiritual path Can you read the parenting manifesto? I can, yes, I don't know without cry and wasted. My guess is that ok, this is every home has to Its own manifesto yeah, if you don't, then, home is operating under confusion in chaos in whatever, and maybe
a manifesto that hasn't been spoken, but I love this for people to sort of in court rate as their own and just as they will, but above all else, I want you to know that you are didn't lovable you're, saying this to your children, s, ok, you will this, from my words, in my actions, the lessons online, are and how I treat you and how I treat myself. I want you to engage with the world from a place of worthiness. You will learn that you are worthy of love belonging enjoy every time you see me practice self compassion and my own imperfections. Yes, we will practice courage in our family by showing up letting ourselves be seen in honouring
ability will share our stories of struggle and strength. There will always be room in our home, for both we will teach you compassion by practising compassion with ourselves. First then, with each other. I want you to know. Joyce together will practice gratitude. I want you to feel joy. So together will learn how to be vulnerable together, will cry and face beer and grief. I will want to take away your pay But instead I will sit with you and teach you how to feel it. Gonna cry right now:
We all want a mother like that. I'm a dad, Steve hello. We will laugh and sing and dance and create. We will always have permission to be ourselves with each other, no matter what you will always belong here. As you begin, your whole hearted journey, the greatest gift that I can give to you is to live in love with my whole heart into dear greatly. I will not teach or love or show you anything perfectly, but I will let you see me and I will always whole sacret the gift of seeing you truly deeply scene. I just wish everybody could live by those words. Really do that's how you change the world I believe that Spike Jones, the director and forget actor too. He came by, he just didn't any help, start your show, and unlike washed and journalists, so you just came by and interviewed me six
before my shown on the air about what I wanted to show to be, and after that, on the Therefore, while national sentiments Bashir, he sent those notes back to me. Does I want to remind you what your intention was an the things he said that he saw circle or pointed out in it was I dont know how to do nightly. Comedy showed its also about love, but in some way to be about love and there's so many different ways to express that. I suppose. Always you and said that's what I said to him in the interview which goes back to me, as a reminder and when look at the show that we're doing right now. I hope that I think it's interesting that you set an intention. It yes yeah yeah, then you start and you don't know how to find it and that that gives you all kinds of, but wasn't that helpful knowing the way help. To find the way right, because anything is possible and
It was ridiculous for me to thank it. Wasn't gonna be agonizing to do in public when it was good you you want to know what you're doing. no I'm an improvised or by heart, so I started comedy, but still you want everything you do to be successful right, but you can't be and it's always gonna be painful to make a transition or change like that. You know that still get up at the bottom of the hope for love the hoped for love, and I think now we found that I love my country. I love site I love facts. I love you. Regardless of the race over there or their gender identity, and the challenge now is to love the people who don't seem to have that value in their heart, or least how it expressed, how thin David. Do you define character? What is this thing that we are missing Wilson, they have become an old fashioned for the word. but to me, there's a centrepiece of us that makes decisions, and every time you make a decision or have next. France. You turn that core piece of yourself into something slightly more elevated or something
degraded and if you make, One choices, you solely engrave, a certain set of habits and dispositions inside that core peace. If you meet, Amanda decisions you make that this little degraded and when I look at people with character? They have is consistency over time. Things that make us sleet us astray or short term lack lustre, agree their hunger, but the things that character are long term like honesty and courage, and so those people just able a consistent and can be counted on over time because they have something solid and grave what is it? Do you think that it's about or that changes people and how Have you manage the power you held well. I haven't held them much our region, I'm view too, that power is there's no power in the vice presidential. Reflective comes from the press.
I think the reason people abuse power is that they fact are seduced by the notion that they are so self important. that they really matter when, in fact, it is not usually the case. The leaders I'm observed over the best are the one Courage too, a good chance and willing to lose on principle and to are self aware. We understand their strengths and I understand and weaknesses play their strengths and they try to shore up their weaknesses and the people. Don't do that in the people. Aren't self aware enough to know, because, most of the time that abuse ends up in their downfall as well, so it was being driven into work. This morning I was looking every body and you know trying to blessed. I think I'm gonna try blessing everybody that I seated, I always said blast them with land before you get there always talk about her
before you go into the meeting just past everybody with love before you go into me in your mind. Yes, in your mind right, so, if you're going to an audition, if you're going to an interview for a job, you know the loud and would like, as a few other thought on, we're gonna need this job and I I really needed- and I hope the like me all of that actual- Limit your capacity, the energy desperation, shows in the ways that will actually might promote their wanting you to work for their company. So if you instead say the only thing going on here, is I'm going to bless that person there here to bless me? I don't know I'm supposed to get that job. My only gender, as that God's will be done, which has the downloading of the file one vile folly, God's will be done right. when you talk to colleges or speak to kids, who are looking for what to do with their lives down which your best advice through its really about following your intrinsic motivation, doing it is sort of figuring out your purpose. What what? What are you here to do? What are you uniquely good at and then I
Actually add to that the importance of doing it persistently being dog at I think there are massive returns to two doggedness doable if the paradox of prosperity is the reason why we are now seemingly king meaning more than ever. I think that's part of it. I mean what you have as you have us all is abundance has liberated us, but not fulfilled us in We have people liberated by prosperity but not fulfilled by two they're using their extra time, and energy and treasure to lift that level of satisfaction, and so the spirit he has in some ways liberated this thing. That's I think, fundamental about being a human being which is figuring out. What am I right here? What's it all about how my connected everything else. When you look at the sheer volume yours success is really kindness, dagger ring it's kind of awesome, because you written all these songs over the years there.
Ah the themes for our lives is more than just soundtracks. Here theme for where we were in our lives and I'm just curious as to what you tap into. To bring that kind of that resonates with the world into a form That's call some writing. I've always believed in my heart that the best songs the ones that resonate in my soul and therefore go out into the world and resonating other people's dont come from us? They come through us I always say little prayer before I go to my musical and it's a sort of prayer of intention. Please let me bring forth something help me that will help you. I mean Certainly later in my songwriting, I tried very much
for my songs, to have some mobility to touch others and help them to be in a better. place them before they heard the sound, but I do try to right in the most simple way. feelings and for writing about that touch, the heart. During this whole place, Does a writing? Did you change? The way you were able to express suffering because I read that at one point that you thought that that was like dont that's too, I don't tell that story. Yes, I don't let anybody know yeah now you feel completely different, in the sharing of the story yeah well, I would say that one of the most important lessons I learned through the successive while is that it was such an affirmation that, if you take, that
if you take that chance, if you tell that the truest hardest deepest story, you have within you, you're, not gonna, say then to the light and find that you, there alone that you're gonna be surrounded by people who were there with you and say men to save me to meet him and when you take that, as I see a risk invulnerability your risking showing your true nature? Yes, but you know a hero was writing about the death of my mother. As you know, my mom died of cancer. She was forty five the greatest loss of my life, and it was that story. I had to tell over and over again I've told it in all of my books and there was a point worth like: ok shall you need to set up about this? A lot of people die of cancer with quick camps, about acquit moaning about, but I had something really true to tell about that loss. And also, what came after that loss that me finding my way back to life through remembering the loved that my mother gave me and
I ended up when I did take that chance of telling that very specific story, came with the universal voice. That's what I found, because I wasn't just about myself. I was talking about Osborne. potential. Always bigger than the problem. Your potential is infinite and, as always, bigger than whatever problem you're going through So when you begin to have a vision of this is good. I'm a shout and men, you begin to have a vision about the possibility who you start we pulled by it and then once you really sincerely embrace it in your life, begins to be ok when I wake up this morning and when How can the direction of my purpose I'm gonna, walk in the direction of my vision, then walking?
wretched, that possibility and the potential yes. Instead of allowing myself to go, woe is me, or I can't believe, I'm gonna walk in the right. This. A good decision today do not pushed this pre Open told me to asian freezes. So you walk in the direction of the potential in the possibility, instead of being stuck here, then United, push this much, The cosmic to buy for does need to hit you as much were pulled this you're being pulled more by joy, and it's like I mean pulled my son no, it doesn't mean. I could have challenges, of course, that we need praying deliver challenge. Free life were praying that the challenge had come, activate laden potential So this is how you learn to manifest, which is the stage too, is my understanding that principle of the push in the understand the pain pushes into vision, pause. Ask what if question yes begin to see visualize the kind of,
If you want to live begin to talk about it, began to write it down. begin to dream about it, and they, I teach is you talk about, it doesn't mean you talk everybody, because everyone is not trustworthy trade Talk to selected friends about, it's about it, you talk to it rightly talk to the vision. Talk to the possibility talked and love. You talk to peace. You talk to prosperity, I see you everywhere. I see you prosperity in the law, I see you abundance in the grain of sand. I see you everywhere. You talk to it after a while, you're talking from it when divine and ivory connected on jumping the broom irony. But thinking like wow, the kind of guy I wish I could marry he so amazing, and I was looking at her light. That's making good she has talent like,
superstar like not even adamantly technology, and I was thinking he was out of money just because a how amazing he was. I was like Lord. What am I has been doing- and I just felt God telling me like it's time for you to get out of this relationship is time for you. focus on me, and so I did that. I started to focus on God and and in that time Thank God save it. Does he say no gun. You must go now the reward you know. How does it come to you when he told me that allows my husband has sounded like that around like Devonshire has where was that? How what was going on, I was just praying. I was just on my knees, praying and I've been praying for a husband know. I was praying for help. I was praying for growth. I was praying for healing, I was praying for majority. I just I'm saying just focus on you, so I said the next nine months. Just for sing on me, and defining myself, because even at that time I still had decided to be celibate right away,
still making mistakes like not tons terms of sex being a mistake, but as making mistakes in terms of putting myself in a bad position where I wasn't happy, with the results that I was getting in my life relationships in relationships just emotionally which in the relationship part of it, let overrun. Every single other area of my life but without it wasn't, a few months ago. I why decided becomes element? I started telling. the family that he was my has in everyone's Ike and use them. No, we are not debating. I live alleviating. I don't know any of none, so you manifested this yeah yeah, but everything was confirmation you called it in his hearing entered so then I started speaking it so they started shamelessly telling it and then eventually, people started coming with me in saying stuff So when I was second grade and were told what do you want? when you grow up, and you said secretary as it sets?
Terry, because to me from what I learned in culture, that's Women did women this men in their dreams and then I would I'm with a note to my weather for my teacher, and I thought it going to praise me and instead it would be sick, like I think this is something you should be paying more attention to and that just triggered are there so many levels. Take no so what happened and so when basically gets on board that what we need to all do is to fix this. How do we get this out this child, and so my father, but a luxury me of my first lecture from my father about the way I should act in the world. The way that I should be voice do this general goes out and boys are not secretaries. No boys, not secretaries. Boys are football players Alice Cowboys. That's what they do
so then did you try to conform for them? Sort of compromising. When they weren't around. I would express myself. when they were around, I would say, quietly Just do my homework, but this is what's amazing, to me and I think, to anybody who reads redefining illness- is that fifteen years all you may, The decision after meeting your friend windy that you were gonna go to school as a girl. then you, basically, transitioned in your own heart that you had the courage to set out and do that if ten years, all dear you, into schoolyard. Freshman year is trials by you. Well you're you're, now JANET full time full time. I come back after nine No I'm not going to present in a way that, ex anyone else comfortable, I'm going to present in a way that makes me comfortable. And so I had just been elected class treasurer, and so
stand on that stage. The first day of school are sophomore class. They say hello, everyone JANET and did everyone just accept it? They accepted, and I think a lot of people tolerated at- I think- that's pretty amazing I marvel at it now at that time It seemed like the only possibility. The only pathway. All I had growing up. I grew up poor our group as a black child, and communities are already suffering and so the only resource I had was my truth. was myself. That's the one thing I Could control in the world is to present and be who I knew I was. I knew that living often I am being myself would be the first step towards any kind of success,
at eleven years old I made a very definitive decision. And my decision was that I wanted to be happy above and beyond, anything I ever did in my life that I wanted to be happy. but I remember these grownups coming to me and say: do you wanna be a movie star when you grow up? Do you wanna be a dancer unity, professional dancing when you grow up What do you want to be, and I would say happy and they Look at me really weird. No, we said. Well, you wanna bayonets. I want to be happy that really all. I want to talk about an intention. To better intention than a white picket fence,
