Everyone SAM sanders here so job John Tommy and dan are taken a much needed break to gear up for twenty twenty four. And in the meantime, I'm here to give ya fun content. You may recall as a guest on pod, save america previously, but our co host, a podcast called vibe check and very excited to shear right here in this feed today, an exclusive clip from Newest episode of vibe check with your right here. In this with me and my co host Zack and Saeed we're gonna look back at some of the most What news moments of this year, specifically the or in israel and palestine, and what it says about america's changing place in the world also Sheer be in the year of protest, sweeping every industry across the country and happy showing us a new way forward for our politics and, thirdly, abortion on the ballot,
Your has seen referendums in many states across the country the aftermath of ro falling these Brenda comes kind of forecast. What next year's election might be, I'm calling it the control election will explain our right. Here's my chat woods inside on those stories and more we're back we're to keep this. Rotation going talkin about the biggest moments of the year. I want us to use this segment to talk about our biggest newsy or political moments of twenty twenty, three and jack. don't start with you? Alright, why? I think the story that has defined this year for me in so many ways, is that Israel, hamas conflict, that begin october Seventh, when Hamas and attacked israel resulting in a thousand people dead and the responding attack from Israel that has now engulf the entire.
And this is a story that is, I would say once in a decade type of levels. It's something has really stop the world, everyone thinking about its constantly the news. It's constantly conversation I'm having with friends and family and something I'm constantly just waking up and thinking about- Do you to go on for a while? So I think you know it's been an non. Doing. Things have been going on for over seventy years and we ve had this new infection point that, I think, is just boiled. Oh, and changed our lives in so many ways that I'm still figuring out. So for me, that's the big story of the year, absolutely both because of what happened. The terrorist attack on october seventh, but also, I would say, Israel, in my opinion, just factually disproportionate response what palestinian people are enduring and trying to survive, has been harrowing just to observe right to say nothing of people
they are directly and in terms of the future of news like where, where do we go into twenty twenty four, I dont think that this is a new topic. I think you're right. This is a bend in the river for a lot of people. Many people's relationships to political ideas, ideas regarding politics, nationhood war, violence and each other. You know how feel about how the people around you feel about. This topic is certainly heightened, and I, I think you know getting to the real the awakening aspect of it. People owning their politics is probably a net good, but this is costly. You know what I mean like like how many thousands of people have died. so that we can have a richer understanding of politics that doesn't sound like a silver lining. I wanted a embrace. No, yeah for me, this com it has really shown the ways in which america,
has moved from being a leader on the world stage to an out wire, When you look at the number of countries that are increasingly and consistently calling for a cease fire on the region, its now a majority of the world, the vast majority of the world in over the outliers are Israel and the? U s, and maybe france. I love that list dig deeper because, as also president Biden isn't outlier computer the most you as citizens and most americans are like suits fires, louis the way to go, yeah and Oh, it's been very interesting to see this conflict happen and have the bite and white house continue. The rhetoric that most modern era president's have used, which is, we are a global leader. America, as a global leader, were doing this to protect the world that rhetoric is kind of being trotted out in the midst of this conflict, but it is
at the reality. The reality would be that, if the u s wanted to be a leader, they would. It's more adamantly be pushing for a cease fire, which is where most of the world is so as, for me, marks a real shift. We don't this thing ends, but this for me marks another big moment in which the? U s on the world stage, whether believe it or not, it's kind of being left behind the that such a clear way of putting it. That is the biggest difference I feel as someone in their thirties who seemed the: u s, engage in many conflicts, always felt like we were. one leading the west into bout diplomacy to whatever, in our just reacting to babies, thoughts and actions in these really clumsy ways, and even inside the white house, it's really divide, like I've, never seen Why are staff so divided over something in turn, myself with last thing or say about this? given the way in which the bite and why
ass, the administration america talks about the conflict itself. They talk about it as if its affair, fight in so many ways, it's not. People in Gaza are relying on people who were attacking them for a it and to let them cross the borders. That is not an even or fair fight and it seems as if the bite and white house is really reluctant to acknowledge that reality, its troubling. I am question aimed at how the buyer, stats changes as we move into the election year because, as I mentioned, the madrid of america this point at least its citizens. They want a ceasefire and again listeners when, help us out. Errors is gonna air a few weeks after we have actually taped it, but this is a headline that I'm going to read it s one. Today, it's from reuters quote. Israel ordered palestinians to leave parts of the main southern city in the Gaza strip,
monday, even as its bombs rained down on areas where it told them to go. Right, so have nobody. There have already been displaced once who have moved to a safer place, are now being bombed there. This is collective punishment. There's no coming back from this knowledge. There are certain moments in your life. Either you note. If your direct, effective or you witnessed them. If you saw the shock in our campaign, for example, in two thousand three, there are certain things: were you see and you just don't come back from that knowledge? I hope it's of productive transcendent transformation right where you're like. Ok. How do we real? How can I work to make the world a safer place, but I think for twenty twenty three, this is the kind of year a lot of people are having yeah yeah. moving on side. What was your most impact for news here, when a comment from this year, I think it certainly relief
It's too the cease fire or free palestine moment those are related, but maybe not the same for different people, but protest a year, where I think many p who may be haven't had to make protest sign or you don't find where like. Where do you get up megaphone if you'd make it? Why did I will let you know to me like learning to download ops can be safe and case. Your phone is confiscated by cops. Had a protest like all of that. Like a lot of people, I think are waking up an hour lies, a gun like I was saying before, like distance of understanding the power of the body in terms of movement in terms of dance, that pleasure is transformed into the power of the body in terms of collective action. Sag, w J t stir. You p S. Hospital work, lotto workers, oliver autoworkers, I have a friend in who lives in portland, Oregon,
She I teachers are protesting that you know I mean it's just every sector of our lives, certainly in the last few years, but it really feels like twenty twenty three has been like an inflection point, and I have found that inspiring. You know hard won. I mean it's like people, don't boycott or protest until shit is really real. You know people do not just do that casually. As my opinion, I don't want to just be like all, but so nice to see public know this real. This is real and forget some of these issues, frankly, life or death. But it's good to see people recognising that there is power in our bodies, and there is power and coming together. To say like no, you know I'm not like a lone voice. what I have enjoyed watching in this year of protest is all of us seeming to collectively. Like put all the together every sector. Every industry
is dealing with the same issue. Corporations and shareholders have too much power and too much money and they're not sharing, and it doesn't matter if you work for the post office or h b, o max right, like collectively, we are realising that there's a corporate power structure that across all industries is exploiting lower wage workers and just like out of sync with the rest of out of sync, yeah and so to see everyone say no, if not just over here, it's not just over there, it's all Listen all around that. Those like progress to me down everything people have become really aware of how protests can lead to different types of results. I mean living less angelus. We ve seen how the strikes have directly impact in the cities
amex stance and how we've also had to rush to help each other. You know every quarter. I go with producers to buy food for I artsy members, because no one thinks about the guys that are serving you food on set, so we're all thinking about the means of production is really broad ways and in arriving to moments within that pipeline of where we can show up and help out, which has been really incredible. It's like so much power I think, is and has been taken away from, individual people right. It's like voter suppression, just being one example right where you you know increasingly likely. I think we often feel we don't have a voice to influence. What's going on especially when corporations and billionaires have so much power, but seeing people you know the phrase power to the people is real ahead, resonates for reason- and I think twenty twenty three reminded us of that sam. What you what your big news, political moment of reflection for twenty twenty three,
I have been watching one simmering politic story that I think will be defined. issue of the twenty twenty four election, and that is see Ain abortion when it's on the ballot across the country and every election after row has fallen and every election in it states were blue states. Voters have chosen to preserve the right to legal, unsafe abortion. It's happened everywhere. It's happened in the mid west, it's happened on the coast, and this is a sign for democrats and republicans about. What's. Gonna resonate a most fascinated by the results in Oh sides, although age, I oh no, I asked yes and we discussed this before in a previous vibrate episode, but what I found so fast at about that election is it's not just the republicans why
did the right to abortion on the ballot. It said. In the same moment, they tried to distant and shies voters rights to vote, to get the results that they wanted on abortion, they lost on both counts. This is it deal and it sets up the ways in which abortion, is actually bout more than just abortion this next election year. It's about control, there's a beautiful essay written by ever back the tray stir in new york magazine that lays out a bit but long story short. When you talk about abortion, and you talk about the current gm p, this is just the start of what they want to do. They dont want to just control, your right to legal and safe abortion, they want to control what pronoun You choose to call yourself. They want to control what kind of books can be in your libraries they want. You can try
what your children can aware and what bathrooms they can use. They want to control whether or not you can organise to unionized when you're work. It is all about control, as one party that isn't just trying to control things like abortion, they're trying to control your access to the I'll at box to the uncontrolled, your right to things like abortion. It is imperative for democrats should they want, you not see trumpet elected again, it's imperative for them to connect these doubts. I think a lot of folks on the left are just thinkin. Well, you know next year just say abortion over and over and over again it's a winning issue, but is not enough. I think there's a moment. Now seeing the way that the entire european reacted to the fall of row as a moment to say this, action is all about control. One party wants to control you inside and out the
other seems to want to lower childhood poverty and see wages go up like it's like it's just kind of a no brain or to me I don't trust democratic leadership to get that message in right, but there's an opportunity should they want to to do just that. But yeah. For me, abortion is the political story of twenty twenty three and it will also be for twenty twenty four, the. I love that, because you're right, the democratic machine does need a through line to really galvanized all of it's constituents, and talking about control is a really juicy thing. I can bite into that as a voter, Emily, okay, they're, trying to
if they're trying to control my bathroom kind of control, where I can watch drag, shows trying to how I vote. I read what I can, but my kids were there and trawl is such a good verb to use there and it has helped me kind of crystallize. What's happening cause it, they get us with. You know: here's a drag queen, here's a book, here's a this has it's like all over the place, but we need that thing to coalesce and control does seem to me that an there so likely and so loves. You used the word freedom when you, when you feel a bad, they want the opposite. They want. Opposite for you in your body, will see if the democratic parties leaders is this opportunity, because I think both when it's like, obviously abortion. The ballot works like another issue, ceasefire, the overwhelm Support have none, but guess who's name everybody, but the people at the top. You know it but yeah. I think,
clear- and it's like it's a clear through line its actionable when you say that this election is about control, it like lines up in people's minds, you can see the dots go, ducked, Acta and that's powerful. I got it it's the JANET jackson election. I was away, but I was like ours there when he gets there, but I'm going to let us I want to give credit where credit is due: the rebecca traced essay I alluded to. As in new york magazine, it was published november seventeenth of twenty twenty three and it's called, abortion winds again now what? Now? What you just heard a clip from vibe jack. It's a weekly culture, gas. Where me SAM sanders and my friend sancho
say jones and zack stafford talk about everything and make of? What's going on in news culture entertain etc, and also how it all feels think five jack.
