Let's get to the news two's there was the biggest set of mid term primaries yet with voters, selecting demo riddick and republican nominees in north carolina, Oregon, kentucky idaho and pennsylvania, the perennial swing state, which featured the most consequential races of
evening. We can talk about all the results, but, let's start with the race for pennsylvania, governor were attorney general Josh euro on the democratic nomination after running unopposed and winning his life two statewide campaigns by convincing margins and twenty sixteen and twenty twenty he will face. One of the most extreme candidates to ever or run for governor in america. State senator Doug master yano, who wanted to throw out the votes of millions of pennsylvanians in two thousand and twenty helped organize the january sixth rally in DC and was caught on video breaching the barricades by the capital police den, how did mastery and albeit a crowded republican field, and why should we lose sleep over this particular election.
will there? I think there are two reasons he won. The first one is perhaps the most concerning, which is that there is a very strong, very clear plurality and the republican premier electorate for the most aggressive, the most pugilistic ethno nationalist authoritarian, big lie believer. They can find That is what the republican primary electra once they also have a very good bullshit detector. For who says it and who believes it must run are absolutely clear. believes it and they are willing to put aside. sanity career, share in elect ability. anything else for the person that they think will much like they donald from two dozen. Sixteen stand up against the thing they fear most, which is the idea. There. Their version of america, a white straight christian version, is under assault from change right Progress in whoever will stand up against that issue. They want we, whether the Think they're gonna win whether they are correct, but they really believe
whether they are true. We now adopt other parts of sort of this kind, the nationalistic eat, those that must remain as they will take that person The other reason is more technical and, I think leads to a different compensation which is Josh appears campaign identified maastricht as the candidate they would most likely I am against basra now did not have a ton of money at the outset spent very little money on paid media and mail. So much round his campaign ran about eight hundred thousand dollars of ads. now attacking master on as the candidate most like tromp, the biggest trump supported the one trump wanted most, which was free advertising for master on our ends. Helped. Lift him in the primary is that the only recently ones was at the main reason he one it's impossible to say, but it is, certainly was a contributing factor that just virus paint inserted themselves in that primer. Shoe help select, thereupon it. I saw this so announced our shipyards campaign about this, and they said it.
By the time they ran those ads he was met. It was clear: master anna was ahead in the polls and what they were trying to do was start the general election early to remind people as early as possible and start educating people as early as possible about how extreme mastery ano is, and the other thing is. Of course he did get that you know they said he's most like trump he's. The one who got the trump endorsement that he got a late, late, yeah like you, given what moshe run and won by just how terrible the other candidates in the field where it's possible, he in perhaps even probable, he would have won absent that, but it did create this, like new cycle, the very much helped master honor, which is a bunch people, see ad saying he's pro trump lady series rising in the polls republic, and start panicking about it, which becomes more and more when the republican establishments as this candidate is unelected. Or to mega like her to trump like that actually becomes like that reinforces their boat a few days with the mega base.
So, whether it's the reason or not, I do not know, but it is. It was part of its part of the story of why he won for sure, but this guy's disguise I realize there's a lotta hyperbole out there, the sky he he fits all of the
the the most dire warnings about him. He is an extreme christian nationalist who has said that he believes, god is using him to change history. That has would doug history an upset if he becomes governor. The thirteen million americans who live in pennsylvania do not get to choose the president in twenty twenty four doug master Jano gets to choose the president in twenty twenty four. He was bragging just today about how if he gets elected, he gets to decertify election machines. He gets to appoint a secretary of state that will be compliant to do whatever he wants. If Donald trump runs and doesn't win in two thousand twenty four doesn't win fairly in pennsylvania, Doug master Jano will just overturn the election that state he will push. The legislature
to ah appoint their own series of trump electors, and so he gets to choose the president in two thousand and twenty four pennsylvania's. Twenty electoral votes are off the table. If doug mastery ana winds in two thousand and twenty two, that's how serious it is. If, if democracy is not your issue and Doug master becomes governor you're one of the tens of thousands of women who have a pregnancy with complications that may threaten your life. The state of pennsylvania will condemn you to death because of doug mastery onto because he thinks that you should die because he wants to criminalize all abortion, with no exception for rape, incest or the health or life of the mother. Again he says this is his sincere religious belief. He thinks it's okay, to prevent gay couples from adopting a child. He wants to mandate.
teaching of the bible and public schools. He's attended queuing on events he's attended events held by a religious called, the police quote. They have been tasked with battling real world demons who control global leaders. This is the fucking guy that Republicans have nominated in the state of pennsylvania, endorse by the leader of their parties, Donald J, trump Republican, morocco, I mean again just to get a sense of how extreme the sky is. The republican governors association, not a bunch of lives over in their publishing, governs association. They released a very tepid. It meant about mass rhinos when, right after he clinch the nomination and the only thing that the statement really said was quote. Republican voters have chosen him at all. They can say about it, Some republican officials in pennsylvania have told reporters that they might endorse shapiro, who most
What analysts now say is the slight favorite in the governors race, even the Senate race which we're going to talk about in a second is rated as a toss up, because the political environments are tough for democrats, but because master and so extreme that it, this raises rated. As lean Democrat, what do you think down like does shapiro have the slight edge here and should he be running arrays. Where he's trying to pick off republicans, first I want to say, let's be very clear about the republican governors association This is not about the fact that they think Doug master. Otto is dangerous. They just think it's not necessarily electable, they don't want to put. They want to waste money on an unelectable So what they're going to to wait, they're gonna, look at them walls and if the poles are close, they think they have a shot. They will win, how percent locked, solid guarantee invest in that race there's, just like every republican him trump. When there are like in twenty six we're going to stand back. You know, after the access hollywood tape are not going endorse and then once they thought it was close. They got behind him again,
let's not that they are not getting any profiles, encourage award for that tepid statement and, I think, There's gonna be gone for a bunch of republican elected officials in pennsylvania. We should not presume that they're going to do the right thing here, unless it's becomes patently obvious that master of can't win. If he can win it, there are going to be behind them. now. That is that the most important to know here, as I do that It is true that shapiro has a slight edge for sure he's. A good candidate must run was not a good candidate. He because of mass, ran asking incredibly dream stances, but he is out. a larger set of the electorate is available to him. Ass run. It was the kind of candidate who can push some of the republicans in intensive supported by an but our thinking about our public in back into this camp. But we should be clear that national can win. This race sugar, was at best a slight favorite young, and so
is very, very possible that this is not what we cannot be complacent about. We should be fully prepared that, if we do not do everything possible, we will have. Someone is dangerous. Is master otto as the governor of this? and so like in terms of strategy. Yes, he should reach out to republicans. You shouldn't do it at that. expensive, trying to turn out the democratic base. But the republicans you should be looking for are the republicans who voted for Joe Biden in two thousand and twenty and voted for a Democrat in the house or the senate in two thousand and eighteen. That is the universe of republicans. I think he should be looking for yeah. I mean just so everyone's clear how difficult this year's going to be and pennsylvania voted to the right of the country in two thousand and twenty by like what three four points, Joe Biden wins. The popular vote by about four points, wins pennsylvania by one point: If we have a mid term where the you know, national vote republicans are, are tied or ahead or whatever now magic, pennsylvania. Three to four points to the right in europe.
eyes how even a candidate with a slight edge like Josh shapiro, is going to have an uphill climb, just because of the overall political environment. I do think that you know shapiro was out with a message about mastery the night of the primary he released a statement. I thought was a pretty strong message to start with. He said mastery. China wants to dictate how pence indians live their lives, that's not freedom. Real freedom comes when we trust pennsylvanians to make their own decisions about who they love, who they pray to and how and when they start a family That's that's pretty good, yet you, it tells me that josh apparel watches pots of america he's coming here not you know what else you thought that other than ass, sir? Yes, I know, but it is the way it is the type of message that both I think you know is, are our friend and not a shack grocery, always as excites the base, but also persuaded the middle, like. I think that is a better
very good message, so the Senate race. We now have a democratic nominee in pennsylvania, lieutenant governor John feder, who won a landslide victory on tuesday night, while recovering from a stroke. He took nearly sixty percent of the vote, while congressmen conor lamb got twenty six percent and state rep malcolm can. Yet ten percent. Some pundits are saying this was an important ideological battle between the more progressive fishermen and the more moderate lamb others have pointed to pheromones near you first name, I d his style. Even his sweat, shirt, sweat, short aesthetic. the atlantic, David Graham, had my favorite line. He wrote that fishermen quote, looks like he was hacked together from spare parts in oil street pittsburgh chopper girl. What do you think? What do you think's going out with betterment any. The idea that this was some sort of major ideological clash in the period between the left in the centre is absurd.
I think it is fair to say that Conor lamb was a more added prudently, moderate canada and federal meant, whereas Bernie Sanders is enough for four and very grow. If lie for legalizing marijuana even put a flag of legalize marijuana like above hit, those were the lieutenant governor works, but in the end of the day, eli any voter looked at this from an ideological perspective. Right they looked at it from which candidate they wanted to fight for them, which candidate they thought could win in february, came at us with a gigantic advantage. As was pointed out here, the hundred percent name ID he had run statewide kind of lame had been in the house. for like a hot second, no one knew who he was, and so we we never even got to the ideological. I don't think it would have been ideological that we never got to that, because veteran cameras was such an invention. There was no real argument against fetterman, it's hard to say, like it's connor lamps super Did that federal can't win statewide when he has one state? Why right? So it becomes very it
It's like he was margins yeah by huge margins. Here, he's done he's done very well and he's done well in the exact parts of the state where Democrats have been losing. So he like, he had a electability argument. He had the duty as some of the base. It was pretty overwhelming win for veteran again. I know it's difficult for all of us highly engaged partisans who live on twitter. To imagine that a lot of voters don't approach the race via ideological positioning and even issue positioning, but it happens. That's the way that voters are and look fetterman is is he is more progressive than lamp for sure he doesn't Fit neatly into any categories, even if you go by his issue positions right like he, he supported Bernie and sixteen, and he abbot for fifteen dollar minimum wage. Very pro union legalizing weed very pro choice, no corporate money, but then he opposes mask mandates wants to keep title forty two. So
what's racking, even though he supports the rest of the climate agenda from democratic rights are like, he is sort of he's an interesting political figure in the positions that he holds. I was just into a sarah long wells podcast. She is a never trump or she does a lot of focus groups and she was doing focus groups of pennsylvania voters leading up the. The primary. She said that originally you know she's a never trump or if she thought that Conor lamb would be the stronger candidate than she sat in a bunch of focus groups, and she said that fetterman John fetterman is the only candidate that she has heard it. Voters are enthusiastic,
about all cycle like she couldn't believe the enthusiasm from from pennsylvanians, mostly Democrats, of course, about about a john fetterman. But then she also said he's the only candidate who some of the trump voters in her trump groups that she talked to said that they would consider voting for, partly because he looks like he could be a trump voter to win. Like, let's be honest, you know I mean the conor lamb super PAC ran all these ads. in saying that that fetterman was a silver spoon socialist, like John, I don't think. First of all, I don't, even though that means that John fetterman doesn't look like a silver spoon socialist. You know like, and you see this You know we're gonna talk about David Mccormick was potentially one of his opponents. Mccormick was on ingram the other night and he's like well, you know he's got this look, but the guy has a trust fund. Any went to harvard like he's too trying bait. They realise that john fishermen's style, his appearance, how he you know how it is politics, is a threat because you
now you can. You can get away with a lot more when you have that stuff. It's also just the thing with everyone should in print in their brain. Is that identity trumps ideology right? It is people identify I with parts of John feder men who he is where he's from who is going to fight for more than not like looking out I'm on some sort of you know, national journal votes scale of what he support, he says he looks he and his work helps him, because he seems like an outsider, that if there is one Voters have told us over and over and over again as they want an outsider right, whether that is brought obama. That is donald trump, that is across the board one is an outsider in injunction for, even though he is sitting lieutenant governor zappos is clearly by every part of his life story in his appearance and his personal demeanor and his. In his ideologically complicated policy agenda is
not a traditional politician, and that is to his tremendous advantage in this primary and in the general action, an outsider, but someone who also seems pennsylvania to his core and at a time of extreme economic distress, that a lot of people are feeling particularly cause of inflation, who focuses almost possibly on economic populism right in an estate were, you know, very well any and goes to trump country and go to rural areas in pennsylvania and talks to voters about an in brings a very economically populous message which which works, which works so so, the republican primary in pencil let us try to look at borderline decided. As of this recording, I was concerned that my change by the end of this recording It still looks like they got a ways to go to counterbalance here, so out of more than a million ballots cast jersey resident doktor, Mehmet oz is ahead of connecticut resident david Mccormick. I think it again it's thursday morning.
it's like a round a thousand votes. Now, that's all I'm gonna say the round a thousand votes. They are still county. e mail in ballots, for which republicans, of course, heavy a new found affection for ethnic metal buttons, so they're trying to count all the male belts. There's some provisional ballots here and there there's a couple of counties where they're still ballots, they're counting so there they got some work to do and donald trump who endorsed. Dr oz has obviously encouraged him to just declare victory, because quote it makes it much harder for them to cheat with the ballots that they just happened to and meanwhile, Cathy barnett a right wing extremists whose compared muslims to satan and gay people to criminals came in third with twenty five percent of the vote, despite a late pulling surge that suggested she might win, so the poles before election day had mccormick comfortably in third. They had Barnett surging. What do you think happened? I think it's
simple, that horse race pulling has reached the level of statistical alchemy like if just meant nothing it we should prime primary polling, especially, is is not always as reliable as general. Pulling, which, as we have also seen, is not reliable, arrive as well, but especially primary boy stuff. I mean it no did I mean the race clearly was moving pretty quickly right, Barnett, when from almost nothing to eat like whether we have a huge. We have like effort from a poisoned tree branches, all of our comparisons here, our other poles, but if you look at the aggregate of the limited obviously flop and we have barnett when from clearly nothing two very much in the lab in the next. to a massive amount of scrutiny on her, some pretty powerful white rightwing figures attacking her and so maybe she went up and came down and of that went mccormick, but that doesn't make a ton ascends. The mccormick thing doesn't also doesn't fit with
in the normal or the The way we sort of understood pulling. Mrs recently, witches were under counting maggie voters, but you don't you mccormick his problem, less of a mega voter vote like less of it and it from our voters that barnett in oz who, as a addressed, would have trump. Through our kind of mega, so who knows Who knows, I think, there's an argument to say that meteoric stations to stop the horse race polling full, stop because, like what's the point in it's almost always wrong. So I saw someone who knows pennsylvania tweeting that sometimes these polls discount primary polls discount normally republicans and the few that are left and David Mccormack, certainly might be the candidate of more you know this due to permit romany voters right that people who are somehow still republican better like more suburban voters as they get. Hard to know? I guess if, like the way that that can work and not that anyone other than you and I talk about this care, but I guess
we have to listen is, though, like. The screen is interesting right, so is it people who republicans who voted for Biden and twenty who or did not vote in a republican primary in eighteen? Those people aren't super engaged. Maybe they don't pick up the phone when a pollster calls that kind of So that's it. That's a possibly the theory, Horatius all wrong and broken, and could you have created a broken clock it's broken in otherwise a hundred percent are at your john fishermen. Would you rather face in the general david Mccormick or doktor oz, and how would you run again Each of them I have it, we ve been sort of having this ongoing conversation about who would you want to run against between eyes and Mccormick and I think, kind of tough call? I think fetterman is a very strong contrast against both because, as you point out, he is
pennsylvania ruin through. He has populous working class routes from being mayor brad. his policy agenda and he's running against a No, you narrow, celebrity doktor from new jersey and a billionaire hedge fund guy from Connecticut either. One of those is a good contrast. I tend to think and I think that urban is for me, the slightest favorites against, Therefore, those reasons slightest the favorites right, sites like a little bit closer to lean democratic, like right, on the nose of toss up by The thing I worry about with Mccormick, who is I going to be very clear I hit storage shitty should he is just like evidence If you have enough money, you can buy enough votes to potentially win a nomination like he has no charisma, no presence. He just he might or be wearing a t, shirt that says hedge fund billion, our country club like he is terrible, but what he
now has- is that not only to trump endorse eyes? He aggressively opposed mccormick and that is gonna? Give, I think Mccormick. Some Gwen young can moderate croatia. That has policy agenda, does not warrant by the fact that trump oppose them. I think, if a permission structure for some of the voters that we need? Who supported democrats in eighteen and twenty, but we're going to need a twenty twenty two to stick with us, and so you can see it like. There is a world where you get some. I think Shapiro Mccormick voters, because Mccormick will be seen as moderate, not because he is actually matter because donald trump, like him. I will say that I am hopeful that John fishermen in his campaign, have learned the lesson from terry mc collops race against going young
because I am already hearing a bunch of journalists say: oh maybe Mccormack's the next glen young can anyconnect like a suburban soccer, dad and and when those voters who you were just talking about some of the suburban voters who voted for rick, who are republicans or independents, voted for Biden and twenty twenty again, I think, running against when mccormick as just you know, don't call him fuckin david mc trump Ache or whatever they you know. Like he's, not he's. Not people aren't going to believe that this guy is donald, trump and and for good reason. Donald trump has been attacking him for the last couple months. Yes, his wife, Dana Powell, worked in the trump administration. You known a big hero who worked in the administration quietly said things anonymously to reporters about. How was horrible never spoke out left to go, make a lot of money, goldman sachs agenda, then joined her husband's fake mega campaign, so good that she's a hero but anyway, so so, but but would David Mccormick is. Is I merely multimillion or hedge fund guy from connecticut,
who do you know ship jobs overseas and manage money for china right he's like mitt romney on steroids, so run against that, like John, it's adding that's actually a great contrast for John veteran, who is this like working class grass roots economic, populist from pennsylvania and David Mccormick is surely not having the oz one. The oz comparison is a little different like draws is like an out of state quack celebrity so those grand those atta stay, quiet, clack celebrities, never get elected to any ass out. It's not worry that loads of a bag a little heart there is that those their great picture of him that that Mccormick's been using this adds against us of oz, kissing his star on the hollywood walk of fame. I would definitely be using that a lot, but with night, where were you were just young but obviously is donald trump? I do not think Doktor OZ is as smooth as donald trump or have necessarily the same appeal is donald trump
I think he is a little a little stiffer than that, though he is, I think you know I I've seen him on the campaign roles in these debates he's a lot smoother than some of his republican opponents. He's a good communicator he's been on tv forever, so veteran does have to deal with that near you don't want to. I like you can argue either way which one you would rather run against. Both of them can be very tough because of the political environment in the nature of the state. The eyes thing is, I think you don't want to discount two parts of him, which is one media savvy and celebrity are very helpful attributes this course and that it has benefited settlement to grow. This better is a celebrity right, we beneath the level zack oz, but he bid on the cover of magazines and featured on tv because of his appearance, add his story ads. Being the mayor of this, this town, You know he would come to the white house as mayor of the small town, because he was a celebrity bear and the other thing
is, I think, eyes is going to have now I make neither of them are politicians, as has a little bit more out I'd or credit. I think it's like a relationship with the voters. Right he's been on tv, their whole lives he's been city. Next, raw. It's good to be a little piece. Less of a blank slate mccormick is a blank slate that fishermen can define I think either one of these are going to have their advantages for federal money, using the exact right candidate to run against both of them, but pretty it's a tough race in a tough state and a really pretty. As ever outweighs pretty should be political environment. ok beyond the two big pennsylvania races, we have a few more take away to talk about from Tuesday north
and it was the other big swings- data hold primaries the race to replace retiring centre. Richard bur will feature former state supreme court chief justice, sherry beazley, who will be talking to an a bit and be trump endorse. Congressmen ted bud, who cry the fourteen candidate primary field, including the more moderate former governor pat mccurry, another trump act candidate, twenty six year old bo heinz when the crowded primary for north carolina thirteenth congressional district, but in the eleventh district another- trump endorsed twenty six year old, who we've all come to know and love lost his primary, which means that at the end of this year, madison cawthorne will have to go looking for coke fueled orgy invites somewhere else, and then, let's start with the senate, race, ted, budd, vs, cheri, beasley, rated lean republican and how should beasley run against this a trompe guber? Why think the lean Republican is the right.
Rating as of right now we just have to. We should be very clear and very honest that whiting and states that Joe Biden won in two thousand and twenty in a better political environment is going to be tough winning in states. from one there's gonna be a much harder. That doesn't mean it's impossible and I think sure these as an excellent candidate, I have been trying to think about why, like how I would have shit or how I would think about that race. If I was involved with that- and I think the perhaps the best way to do it have to think is in order to win you're going to have to up and everything that is happening in politics and, as happened in north carolina, say, democrats have not want at the federal level since two thousand and eight we have a set of races. We lost the presidential and twelve sixteen twenty. and so that means you need a high variance strategy, right, high risk and the wet- and, I think, ted, it is kind of a relevant to that strategy. Like weather is ted. Category would have been an easier cannot run against because the people of north carolina hate him by ted Bundy
this generic ultra mega extremists to use a favorite phrase of our current president. But the way they think they think about it. Is you have to change the electorate in that state. You have to register a ton of voters. You're have to turn up people who did not turn out in twenty Sixteen twenty twenty and that I think that requires a the two campaigns it had sort of adopted. That strategy recently are stacy abrams in georgia and twenty eighteen and better work in taxes. see now the challenge of that strategy. It should be noted with the fact that the two people I suggested did not win with that strategy, but they came closer than people have come in those states in a long time, and that means you are focused intently on registering voters in the parts of the state that have large pockets of democratic voters in north carolina black voters and what kind of others, but also you're going to every part of the state and what you're trying to do is go to like the counties that
tom tell us be that's it tell us, be calcutta cunningham by twenty points it right in under the normal political, formerly, you would not waste your time to go there, but would you If you have any chance, when did you want to go? Take that margin you want to show up. You want to persuade people. You want to take that margin from invite twenty points elysium by fifteen points or thirteen point. If you do that, not places you can get, this thing closer the wind, and so I think it is a reach out to every voter everywhere focus on your story yourself. I don't think you're gonna given how north from what is voter recently you're you're, not going to convince people that ted is worse than the donald trump. They voted for two years ago or worse than Tom tell us they voted for two years ago, and so I think, after all about her and her story in running in parts of his day. The Democrats have not really campaigned,
massively incense, probably obama in two thousand and eight. I think that's right. I think, to the extent that you do have a message about your opponent, which she will obviously have, and she you know previewed it with me during our interview and I think it's to sort of define ted budd as outside of even the the typical republican mainstream that north carolina ins have voted for. The people from north carolina have voted for over the last ever I mean like, even with even with trump ted, but voted against all pandemic relief, even even the trump bills. The trump pandemic relief, which I think is probably not popular and, of course, then he he voted to overturn the election and which we know because of his vote, and also because a he was one of the people who texted mark meadows that dot george soros rigged the election and rigged all the machines so ted, but is way out there
which gives you some fodder, but I agree that that's a sort of a limited strategy really have to talk about yourself in a state like north carolina, and you got any parting words for madison cawthorne and is what is amsterdam at madison catherine? He does the right thing. He blows the whistle on this coke fueled, glp orgy circuit, and they come after him, it's the price of doing the right thing and he lost his job for a blue emphasis on the word britain just big we're back. Let yourself be clear that, given all of them possible. Puns I could have made the coke one was the most appropriate for this, was I currently podcast. We have right here. I will just say god. I read this very lengthy political profile by medicine cartoon from the other week and it
made me feel I didn't want to say, sympathy for him, but like this is someone who is clearly struggling and I actually like hope he gets help because he is in a, I think, he's in a pretty dark place and it's a it's. It's pretty ugly. What he's gone through another term candidate, whose loss on tuesday I should come as a relief to all of us, was idaho, lieutenant governor genus Magee, who once delivered a speech at a white nationalist event and took picture with the right wing militia, Idaho's current republic. Governor brad little now, liberal, very, very conservative, very trompe, beat her and but trump did have quite a few on tuesday, and there are quite a few other extreme republicans who won their primaries. Besides. Mastery otto dan. Anyone in particular you think we should. We watch no four, he now I'm in it patients question. I went through all the results to china. Like the one person who was like other measures are right. Who was super scary and you're? The take away is they're all bad
Sometimes these slightly less bad version defeated the terrible version by a cry ass the board either there, is no one running against tromp, there's, no, never trump or there's no current version of mitt romney. It's all a question There is no one who disbelieved or pushes back against the big lie. It is just all bad. It is all mega is all extreme everywhere right, and that is the thing it that's the thing, that's scary, that whether the person won the nomination and potentially ends up in congress or the senate. The governor's office is someone who truly believes to their core all the republicans. Barely theories. like dogmas drawn out or someone who pretend to believe them, because that's what takes it. Get elected like doktor, oz or david Mccormick or anyone else The result is the same once they get there because all of the political momentum, all the book or incentives, pushed her
this dangerous conduct like idle? Let's say Lou Barletta, who was one? The people who ran against must run off had one the about. I would not feel that much safer if we were with Lou Barletta, opposite doug master on our whip. If, came to shove on the twenty twenty four election and whether they're gonna send their electors right. You can there's no republican you can send this should make. You feel good about the state of democracy right now. You look across this field of candidates. the one day. You don't see any liz, chinese or adam kinsey nurse or mitt romney's in this field people. You see people who may be didn't get trumps endorsement, but then, because I didn't get trumps, endorsement tried to act as trompe as possible to then beat the person who did get trumps endorsement. That's the dynamic greyer and what because the parties becomes a radicalized, Finally, there were four other democratic primaries on tuesday that featured competitive races between progressive and centre left candidates. For u s house seats, it looks like each wing of the party
one two in north carolina, the winners were centre left candidates, valerie fujian, don Davis in pennsylvania, the more! aggressive summer lee when an extremely close house race for a seat in. Spurred in an organ, it appears the jamie Macleod Skinner off incumbent, kurt trader, A moderate democrat endorsed by Joe Biden himself, Dan, If anything, can we learn about the preferences of democratic voters or the direction of the democratic party from these races? Almost nothing, I would say I think it is like there was that we're moving up. There is a tendency to trade I jam this into her narrative. Why it's? Where you know when you we saw this and some of the two thousand and eighteen primaries, which is like blow to the justice democrats and progressive because they lost a bunch of primaries. Or do you know The party is moving to the left, as we can see this, but at the picture is more complicated, right. Candidate quality matters out. You know context for these races matter.
And in many cases the better candidate running on an agenda that spoke more to the moment into the electorate that district, one, that, with some early in pennsylvania, that was some of these more centre left candidates in north carolina, and you know you look at the current trader. One. That's would read the most notable because you have an incumbent losing. primary the curse. Raider didn't lose because he is ideologically moderate or not. You know a member of support by justice democratic, He lost because he society with the pharmaceutical industry over his own constituents on the most part Neither issue in all of american politics allowing medicare to negotiate tribute represents that's what he lost. Then. like that, it doesn't say that that is not considered. Very, very stupid and corporatist in ingredients. That's why he lost right either. Was raises very interesting because Macleod Skinner she did not necessarily focus as much on her own progressive positions, her. She ran race against
and by saying he was the Joe manchin of the house and voted against the american rescue plan, not a popular thing to do or criticize democrats for impeaching trump, not a popular thing to do, helped, kill, prescription drug reform, like you said, and build back better weren't, one of the most unpopular things to do of any policy issue anywhere is to kill, prescription, drug reform and her line against him, which worked very well. Was you run? So far to the right that running against, you just means I'm a Democrat right. She didn't even have to say that she's, a very progressive democrat she's, the mainstream Democrat he's the Joe Manchin Democrat way out to the right, and that worked for her in that I also want more note. In the summer we win some really eked out that victory in that district. After so much super pack, money was into that raised by and apec affiliated super pack. That has also endorsed a bunch of pro insurrectionists republican candidates and were their ads about disagreements,
we're on her policy on Israel versus her candidate. No, they just decided to just run a bunch of lies about her and it was actually pretty gross with some of these super pacs are doing these apex hooper put and am basically what they say is it's not like. You can have a good faith, disagreement about israel and israel policy they're, basically like if you don't support right wing, far right extremists, governments in Israel, then they're gonna die bunch of money and and lie about you and a whole bunch of other issues and say that you're, not a real democrat and it's pretty growth and the fact that some relief able to win that raise without much money being dumped in dumping. That district is, you know, it's pretty rate, I think, I don't want to dismiss the idea that idea
Was she matters to some butters? It certainly does Rypien lot of people like. We are probably some voters who will look at people's policy positions and do it, but the question is often who is going to fight for me right who's, going to stand up for the things I care about and that person could be very clear. You know an absurd perfectly, a someone who adopts populist economics which may make them more progressive or have them do that. But it's just not it's very hard to put people in boxes, predictions about actual outcomes right because it there's a lot happening there and thursday? I think hopefully there some lessons for some Democrats, curse and cinema for one from for traders loss about how politics is changing. What voters in your state actually want is not just the problem. Solvers cock s de l, see no labels agenda. Do you know I think they will accept as they do with betterment some complex positions on some things. They don't disagree with that. They want to think that you are fighting for them and that is going to meet in many cases danny.
And its corporate interests in that and look, I think, they're just as democrats lot of their ads for their candidates, especially their bio ads, are outstanding. Some is no exception of key. in that later, in that by around she, let her positions, medicare for all and green new deal that that positions which we know outside very liberal districts do not have a majority support, at least among moderates, that you need in some purple districts. But the ad starts out, like you know, I'm from she's from braddock as well, and We made the steel that built america and then, when the rich executive left, we were the ones who suffered our kids got. Asthma are our people lost jobs and now we're trying to get a movement to make sure that you know working people and poor people can succeed in this country. It's just a good message and a good story and that works. I think I think I think he should not discount the power of candidate quality, the store They tell who they are to be coalitions.
Building like these are all very, very important too, to candidate success as well. It's not just data, not just a list of policy positions. Ok, when we come back, I will view the democratic candidate for senate in north carolina, former chief justice, sherry bees. With the joining us. Now is the democratic candidate for Senate north carolina she's, former chief justice of the north carolina supreme court will face the trumpet election deny or ted bud in the mid terms, this november sherry easily welcome to the pod. Thank you so much I appreciate it, so you were a judge at just through. two years old who to win the very top job in your state. Why did you want to become a judge and what did that job teach you about your state and in your
country. You know I am. I grew up with values of hard. in service and integrity. I've talked to me. my mom and I enjoy The practice of law was a public defender first. Can I knew that the role would be right to stand and protect and uphold. Rule of law and respect the constitution, which I know are very very important and- and it was great, of course, to be a trial. I urge you to really. See and see that that the conflicts in people's lives and people honestly offer no come to court on their best days and then to be hell? It judge on the court of appeals and then the supreme court and then chief justice which are really reviewing courts. have been just amazing opportunities to be in service and tyranny.
Appreciate that all of the decisions that people that that are made in court, impact people's everyday lives, whether they know it or not. and to really see the plight of people and to certainly understand I've been in court almost every day for the last thirty years. Seeking the truth at times its heart is defined and being engaged in people's lives. times, which have been life changing for them and frightened We must it for me and at their word, is humanity and being a judge, and there's humanity and being a senator so where few weeks out from the leak of the draft Supreme court opinion and overturns roby wade, recent poll found that fewer than half of all americans now trust the supreme court. That's the lowest share since they start asking the question: what do you say to people who feel like they can't trust our justice system any more because it's become too politicized and in the case of this
court to radicalized, you know I'm suddenly bothered by the lake but what I dont want us to be distracted from is what we saw in the draft opinion and what we saw that draft opinion was an attack on rovers is weighed which, over fifty years has been The dialogue that women have the constitutional right to privacy to protect their report. Have to make their own decisions with their health care provider without government interference ended. constitutional right protected by the fourteen amendments, other amendments and its disheartening Many people are incensed, majorian north carolinians support the right to abortion, as do the majority of americans, and so It's really important is I think about why this race is so important. We stay what's at stake. When there's an attack on constitutional-
We should all be alarmed, and we should really feel a sense of urgency around this election, concern here, north carolina, that we have a congressmen congress about who will be my. Hold it in this election who not opposed to a total ban, even in the case of incest, rape or the health of a mother Well, there's something people around with that, and so I am running a to make sure that we protect our constitutional rights, disdainful, what's right for the we're here north carolina. He will not work north carolina first and I'm gonna make sure to do what's right by the people of the state. So after the women's health protection act failed in the senate. A few weeks ago, president Biden said that if a voter's and a pro choice to congress he'll, be able to sign that bill into law. If you get to the senate, would you vote to remove the filibuster so that a democratic senate can pass a lot guaranteed nationwide abortion, excess
You know, I certainly would John. I know it's important to limit the filibuster. It is a tool of gridlock that has hindered the power. the draft legislation that the majority of people in this country support and- and I certainly absolutely what a supported the a women's health protection act We need to clarify and make law row Vs wade, but I we of course the opinion we saw was a draft opinion, but but but but we should be deeply concerned. So I was working on Barack Obama's campaign when we won north carolina in two thousand eight a democratic I want state wide federal race since then. What do you think happen? The north carolina because I thought after we one in two thousand eight, it would sort of start acting like virginia, did after tooth hasidic maiden start getting Well, we certainly had we had a wonderful k, hagen who was successful, thousand eight
and we have been really close, often since that period of time, and we're ready we have done. work in this campaign. We are about all the opportunities to travel across the state to meet voters to hear about their concerns, so many people here struggling. We're the ninth largest state in the nation, and they want to know that the next senator is going to fight for them who's somebody's going to stand for what's right, who's going to take the values of hard work and integrity to the to the. And we're ready? I mean we understand its important. This will be a tough fight. I've had to fight before I ve never back down, I'm not gonna back down now, but but people, are really concerned about the direction that they see the state. into and that in this country, and and so we're gonna work hard for every single vote, our investing in voters now- and we just know that at this this is a applied
this I know we were told in twenty twenty- that that was the most important election of our lifetimes. But I I tell you my late mother was granted the right to vote because of the voting rights act and if she, if he or she, would tell us that every election is the most important election of our life times so aware spending a lot of time, making sure that were released. Thanks to the concerns of voters, hand, but also helping them to really appreciate the magnitude of this of the selection of this moment. I'm really curious, what kind of concerns your hearing, obviously the most difficult challenge in a mid term The party that hold the presidency is making sure that our voters don't stay home. When you meet people who might be reluctant to vote this file, dont know if their votes is worth, I dont know if they should come out. What what's usually their reason, and what did you tell them? You know, I think often people don't think their boats matter and there are so many people who have felt discounted for far too long and
It is important for them to feel a sense of empowerment, is deeply wrong, when a state legislatures jerry under and dilute votes in e communities and communities of color and so hopping to understand the greater picture what's happening. I help them to know that day. We have not been well served here in north carolina by our two republican senators. I help them to know that the next senator really must fight to lower costs and provide access to good quality health care north carolina. We do not have medicated expansion, we I'm prepared to fight to lower prescription drugs costs. with carolina, spend fourth highest in the nation on prescription drugs. Sure we bringing good paying jobs to people here in the state to fight for a strong economy, and you know it election isn't just about today. It really is about writing the ship and may
ensure that the next generation and generations to come, have a country that is good for them. That is on the right to appeal and as it is in a place where they can take the the gauntlet and go forward and be successful successful. You were just talking about the fact that your opponent ted budd a supports completely criminalizing abortion, even in the case of rape, incest and the life and health of the mother. And what else should people know about but you know, I think and speak louder than words and This man ted but has not been the kind of person who has served north China. Well, we just had they done. This is not about yesterday, too, with the supply a baby formula and
A time when there is a shortage of baby firmly, he voted against. The legislation is not right for north carolina in our he. This is a big military state with lots of veterans and he voted not to increase veteran hey. He voted against expanding access to health care, He voted against infrastructure legislation at a time when both of our senators here and north carolina voted for it and so even at a time when it just makes sense to do what's right. He has chosen not to do what's right and so when people, so you who they are. You better believe him, to make sure that we do not somebody who were not put this state first, who, We really will put us in a very, very difficult and dangerous place, particularly just around abortion, but really that case speaks a heavily to civil rights that we ve been fighting for for a very very long time and we
I- don't need somebody like that and in the united states Senate or if you win, you would be the first black woman from north carolina to serve in the u s senate, I you could be potentially the only black woman to serve in the u s senate right now, I'm! I know that's probably not at the front of your mind as you're campaigning, but how? How do you Is that how are you processing that, as you campaign in this rise in old age on, I am sir? and we know the importance of it. I know that representation matters. I can tell you the first that I ever saw an african american women presiding over a court room. I was a lawyer and I was then judge for children's godson, and I know it changed. Third director of my life, I helped me to envision the possibility as for my life and so I know, diversity, matters in all of our institutions and in all of our government, a platform arms and,
and you're right it's not at the forefront, but I certainly appreciate the magnitude there are twenty four women in the senate and your right. No african american women in the senate elsewhere, what it means for young people to be able to see and understand and envision in the very same way that I was able to. Ah the possible these for their lives, but for all of us, regardless of race, engender to know that we must value diversity in order for us to be the very best that we can be and- and so this raises important on a whole lot of levels. and I know that in addition to that very very important fact that are fighting for the people of the state about other issues that they really really care about and summit my state are struggling about a third of the people here earn less than fifteen dollars an hour,
so. There were people in north carolina who was shortly before the pandemic, and they are certainly struggling now they want somebody in the Senate is going to fight for them. That's that's! Really! I'm running running chief justice beazley! Thank you so much for taking the time to out to dry.
