One of the cruellest things that I get to see as part of my job is the manifestation of the product or products that I dreamed up and created and figured out how to do like. So many of you as a business owner, you get these ideas in your head and it is incredible to get to watch them come to fruition and I started dreaming about one of our most popular products thus start today journal. I served dreaming about this a couple of years ago. I had been doing this daily practice based on several different people. I had heard about several different things and I'm gonna put them together into one daily practice, which was every single day. I wrote down the dreams I had for my life, but I wrote them as if they had already happened. There's something really powerful about claiming a goal as if it's already done, and I rode down every day- and it was how I set my intentions and then I would post about it on social and so many people. What are you doing? What is that? Where do I get that journal nose like guys? It's not a journal, it's just a notebook, I'm just riding down the same thing every single day, but what I think is interesting, as business owners or creators is often times. In fact, most of the time your audience will tell you what it wants from you and I kept pushing it off because I was like you guys. This is not a big deal, but it was an people kept asking for, and I finally just thought what, if I turn this into a product and I started to dream and plan- and I literally taped pictures to the wall of my office, of what I dreamed that my journal would look like in the intention behind it, and I wanted the covers to be really pretty, and I wanted it to be something that you could do once a quarter and then, as you complete at each journal. You'd have a stack of this evidence of how intentional you were about your life and we figured it out, and I mean you know some times we messed up on the shipping and sometimes we rest up on the interior. But we failed our way to where we are today, which is the start today journal in the hands of hundreds of thousands of people. So incredible such a blessing for me to be able to go on Instagram and see hashtag start today journal and see people all over the world using this practice as away
you aim in the direction of their dreams. So if you are not familiar- and you want to check it out, you can go over to the Hollis code. I absolutely will, I am sure, is Jones and, as I like to stay, I am just a girl who decided to go for it, and so I am, I am the mother of a twin boys. They are now three a m away. For eight years and am also offers have entrepreneur, or so I own a brain, really cool brand. ass. He Jones Boutique, we are in a word when the excessively Rana we do really cool things like life, entire customers, but I think that the thing that makes a difference, is our story and so how we got to where we are and how we nurture our customers. I dont know than anyone else. Does it quite like we do so. I'm super excited to share, yeah, so I think I still too they do not know how I found you. I think I must have followed someone who, like was where in your story or something that I clicked Anna was like I love this
and I love like you really truly I'm not just saying this- I think I said it's- you only talks on the phone you really understand a lifestyle brand social in a way that so few entrepreneurs Do you know the first thing that I would say to westerners. If you really want to understand how Sharif gets that you don't sell a product, you saw the lifestyle that the product fits inside of. We know that so first, I would say everybody needs to follow her on Instagram right now, but the second thing I would say is like tell us about the evolution. You started you. a corporate job is outright grow. Yes, a good corporeal job like how to read it. I didn't hit my job. I had that was an entrepreneur by continually being fired. Rachel unhappy goods loves right in
First out that I was fired from, I was appalled because I was in the middle of building a home and homeless solely in mining. Everything was riding on me great. calm. We were getting married cash paid wetting. The wedding ended up in, like essence magazine. It was just like Craig with his job, rape and so on I pulled in the room, and I like the way you did X Y Lindsey, we're gonna make amber begging for mercy like I was sitting at the table with my manager, and I begged him to keep my job like keep my job like act. I could not go home and let my family down like hey, we're, not gonna move into this house like I know it's bill, you know Not only did it out so crazy. the currencies we moved into the house by total miracle. I too was later, and then I got another job.
When I was like commuting at this next job ahead of me like hour and a half rape and her on the radio. I heard this commercial that you could come and set up your booth at this expert right MIKE? Okay, I built a really small website and I am not making any money here like. I can't leave my property about me in twenty four hours a day, and you you're doing accessories. Then yeah, ok, ok, I build the website, but it didn't have any traction and ours. like really encourage to give up. I decided to give it right so I heard the commercial I called in like well. How much is it to be ended? This trade show you like eight hundred hours. Like ours. We need first of all, ok No, I'm getting my mom second of all, who know Abominate made Mama bag right here No, it's just a super ganley when you're trying to represent yourself in this brand new way like who am I
the FAO in in. Do this thing in the thing about the trade show was it was my first one. I was super scared because they Other larger names like well known, reputable jury brains. There unlike who am I to step out in inducing right. My girl, who do you think you are and then the other part of that ways I had. Actually, faced a lot of internal doubt from you, know family and I had something approve. I've wanted to proven wrong. Though I actually did the show, and to take away from the show the first one. Is that my interaction with the customer? Although I made good money I was like I can read my job offers about just keep doing this and elsewhere. Think away, but the second take away outside of the money is the interaction that I had with the customer. So I heard thing at that show like grow up.
think, I'm too pretty to wear a necklace sparkly that close to my face. I don't have the companies to pull this off all gathered around these women in just gave them praises, and you could you gotta, you could do it anyway. He saw her sit up a little bit differently. We here her the mirror and I became addicted to the light. There was little. Thus the seemed like at the way that she looked at herself in a something as simple as accessories something simple accessory so I'm pretty sure that we changed her day and you never know what that moment of interaction and confidence did her life. You know when and where in very small way, and so we are asking of the cars I think that this is not only Colleagues, but also my ministry right now, feels like when you have just found your happy place like when you found your calling it Stanley, Doubleday, yeah, so
am I go. I think I can movement. Let me just figure this thinning out, so I didn't really stupid. I I play and this exit strategy died involves doing multiple trade shows around the country is this is this is only one knew how to leave my job, and so I did maybe Orlando Georgia in New York and a thirty day period, and I did that for an entire year. these things out a book myself at random, like this, is how I'm going to sustain myself and entrepreneurship by a problem happen. I got pregnant at this week, twins Yes and unlike girl, you cannot leave your job now. is not smart. You need your predictable check. You need your predictable health insurance. and what are people really gonna say now right,
and so about three months ago, my pregnancy after a sort of like a little. Many tragedy happen, one more I woke up and I thought I had a miscarriage and I was at the hospital, and that is where they actually told me here. I am expecting great news of laws and they gave me great news of abundance and you're telling me Ray, had twins and am I was Yeah I have these dreams, you gonna be out, and you don't we do we want you to know. at the same time, but then After that happened, in actual push me harder. I use it for motivation because I wanted my children experience different life, my wanted them. Experience freedom, I wanted them to be born into entrepreneurship, and So I decided to move forward with that tour, but the only problem was. I did not factor in what it is. to be a new mother of twins
in travel around the country in your many things in it we sometimes the kids came. Sometimes they didn't eye on them again trying to sell your jewelry, it was the craziest load of crap. Ever nearer, yeah and I never recommend like year. let alone the sleepless nights in Teething Anne and all of that and when you get one baby down the other one, just stars, climbing you gotta start that psycho all over, so with that in trying to make it in entrepreneurship, and so on, did these shows I would stay home during the week. I would like leave on it there. They try to Miami. Come back on a Monday. Did that more four times during the month the end of that year, Rachel. I always mentally spent yeah physically spit. financially spent big although I made money, I was Heller unprofitable, and
I was faced with growth is predictable check, though this is why who wants to be out here? Hustling I could just leave. Problems at work. I could come home and be an entire present and why Why am I doing this to myself, so I decided to do something different, I still believe to myself in a light. If you go back, work. You know you're gonna be unfulfilled. You know this promise that you wanted your children to have building to have a free life. You know I differently. Why so I decided to give it one more. So I decided to give it one more go. This is my last shot in my business before I was gonna, go act. Michael brigade,
they are? I decided to do more research into online marketing paid in targeted ads. Specifically live streaming, and what I knew there was really important for Sassy Jones is that we have a good thing going on people just need to know about it and more people be. No clue they're doing business with. So I quit It is really cool thing called this working party right, and so it was my way a bridging the fear of shopping online because alive The times we ve all been there, you'll get it in the mail. You super excited, you open the bad for you, like somebody lad, I were all my money back right like what have you got? the owner would have. You can ask questions before he made a purchasing decision, so I did it on a small scale. Remember my first live stream. I had two boxes pampers. I set myself I'm on it. I gotta find a bit put some lashes and lipstick on and on some shows behind me nothin,
we bring light. I had a flood like that. I bought from those that yeah The time goes outside on the back there. You know, a floodlight living it. That was my life, and I decided to just use what I had put the excuses away. I did that first live stream. I had twelve people enemy. Six hundred dollars in our eyes Oh, I'm like look viewers in the conversion right, unlike return to our people and the six hundred men. We know, and we I just need to scale this very thing and so on. continue to do it for a year, and I did not. It was so consistent in the crowd continue to grow and I decided to leave from periscope because resorting to do paid advertising on Facebook? And it was smarter to meet the showed to Facebook ran in so I'm already nurturing these people so in
today we ve been doing this for a party for shoe plus years, we ve had The liberties on in its just been a really cool experience, but it's what makes us different had the customer is tied to who they are. sing with rather than what they are purchasing yeah? We talked about this when we first met, this idea that you should have started out doing one kind of marketing and when you really understood that you the brand. That was when everything shifted keys up about that about a year and a half years. I had to tell you I faced allotted doubt without because at the beginning I was just doing what everyone else was doing. I mean I don't know how to run. We can do this on my ok, all these other boutiques. I sit in their staff two bloggers. They are sitting subsidies like celebrities in these make up grows on their like trying to get on right and I'm like ok, this is
who, but I'm not getting anywhere, I'm not getting any traction, and so this is the importance of having positive people who speak away into surround you. I have a business best you and she sent you know what you're pretty do you need to be the face of Europe? I think, my girl. Now. What do you mean she was like Cerise, you need to step from behind the brand and you need to get in, Maybe you need to let these women no like entrusted so I went in fright of became We started to shoot and that's when things changed, that's when people started to gravitate towards the brandy sounded to shop more because they become, I'm in love with who they're doing business with, and I think that the time you know obviously follow you on Instagram and ice. I am not just blowing smoke right now, because I'm talking to you on the show I really do I love. I love
your style and I love the intentionally behind it it's not the same thing. Every day like I think the people tend to have a personal style. You can see that show up over and over again, but I always feel like whenever one of your pictures comes through my feet. Unlike I got out my game, I got I put on possible if subject, I will show up for my life. I've really it inspires me so much so that was really how I first like I saw the band, I thought it was beautiful, but it was this relationship I felt like I had with you that, even if we didn't know each other guy you were just kind of nudging me to deliver more beautiful. I really do think that that is like this unique. Saying that you have I'm so curious though, how like say some of those needing to their so right now, item I wanted, I want to start a business. I wonder how in the world, did you know even where to start, because I think like me, your pretty
self taught reason, and I am obsessed with the idea that anyone can figure out anything everything I wanna do exist on the internet for free online. So can you tell us a little bit about that journey like? How did you learn like? Where did you even know how to get story. How did you know like give us some of that? Yes, so I knew first off that I still wanted to work corporate job and have this website on the side. I was now fully invested a bag was I going to do, is just not be sagging honey. I'm not gonna. Do anything major. Just aside and with their I decided to do research I got out at sea, and I found a bundle package where this woman would create a logo to would create your business cards issue would also create a wet I believe it was five hundred and ninety five dollars, so I took my bonus for my corporate job and I'd invested in that particular product with her
after that. I decided to learn more about analytics, right and so I got on Google, I use coaches. I read a lot of books and It is really trial and error honestly to in arabic clouds. You can read the books, you can get. google- you can do other research. You can talk to the people, a lot of it. You just have to go through. It figure it out brush yourself opting and get back up and Tell you a lot of the people. There are utilised ass designers, I met them, Ali Baba, you just get on, and you just start talking to people, and then you know what I do when I meet up. then on Alibaba. We have a great conversation. I ask if they know people do you have when did you or make handbags my brother, ex hammocks, ok, let me talk to your brother and then so now we get deeper and deeper into these relationships that you know being their family, we had this rule.
Be cool collection, how tribal infinity in its where we sourced pieces from South Africa, and I remember having arm. We ve since stop the collection, but I remember him the relationship with the woman and she it sure is. You have no idea how much you have changed my family's like it, because it you that now my part time was of old timers in just one small things like getting at the age of you know, and so in in doing business with designers and things they get to come up with you, and so you don't always have to try to social climate, just start with the, where you are with who you know how. you know, what's gonna work, isn't like you follow your guy? just like I love this necklace than so she's gonna love. This necklace like how do you figure that out, so I follow and subscribe to daddy daddy, you D woman's we're army. We behave badly in so I read that ever email everything all morning in my inbox and they few outside of.
Following that, I'm really big. On being my own trendsetter, No I'm really get excitement from trying something like we had these glasses that job have framed in them and they are our rat with african prick fabric, and so we just me the thing we just completely mean anything. So it's not that following any one thing: it's just that I'm trying things we put it out there in a beautiful way. with great imagery and great photography in the great video Dorothy, and people are just attracted to you being uniquely you right here, because you dress based on how you feel How do I delete my work? I am and something that I think care. This cannot be overstated. Is that you are like you do at an over how many times a month, you do it, but you have set Photoshop like it's. Just we're not
We gotta play new stuff, isn't coming. They can't do that. How often went to recur every other online ratio in now at this point once a week in yeah, because here is the one you have to do: we have to keep cranking content and if you do, you gotta remain consistent and now I think I've spoiled r r followers in you know our friends and arson see girls because we try to put other people in front of the camera and then yeah informing our living, where I wanted to break off is all my friends who are thought leaders or influence. These are always shocked when I give them that advice, like my schedules, saying right now, but up until recently awaited photos shoot at least twice a month Should you have money to put on the blog to have served to go answered, and there like? Is it that there's almost this attitude of like you,
vapid or you're, obsessive yourself, for you just want it's like no dude. If you want to do all lifestyle marketing you, to have new content on the regular. So can you too, about how you pointed that out and then how you knew, who work with to develop that so what every brand needs to know is that you have to have a community Community is how you know whether you have impact or not, because for us it's just as easy is selling jury, pushing dollars, manner that we legitimate desire to inspire and to make a difference in the lives of these women live. So regular group that you can come into just from doing business with us. You had to be we need to be different. It's not just a regular group that you can come into just from doing business with us. You had to be there so. We have a rewards programme and you know once you get in
We do also crazy step, but this is how I knew what to focus on what the lifestyle sought. All these women they come in, they post their pictures. You're like China, one up each other. You know I got the best. Is I got the best that in its just hilarious but India, Here is where we talk about you I am a mother, I'm a nurse and I still wear my starts to work because I have to wear uniform everyday, but I still want to still beautiful or I'm a stay at home mom and I don't have to go out of the house or get dressed everyday, but sometimes I won a beautiful piece or two had been upon the line. You know the bill Gregg, while I'm in open picking up again. so whenever and so me really doing immense research on those women. In obsessed with my customers like out scroll through their facebook feed. Find out like what it is that they do for a living, because I want to know more about them. I wanted, so much about them and the boy knew about my customers and what they do for a living. I mean and I know how to speak to them. You know I
what pieces to offer. I know that we can't do big chunky necklaces, because you know or overpowering things, because maybe that's not gonna work. Maybe this is that we need to do lighter things because its baker, no one, wants to wear heavy stuff in the summer. You know absolutely despite a role with the pointers and really how in and pay attention to what your customer, why I know earlier in my career when I needed photos, I would trade with people, so I didn't have the budget dire photographer. So I would say, like I was a wedding plenary. I'm so I'd say why I will design like a beautiful table. Scape and you can take. issues of it now you got pictures for your portfolio. I've got pictures for mine and we could so collaborated with people in a way that it didn't costs mean money. Is that something that you can? I We did when I first got started. I found She was a blogger. Is she took pictures and like what
trade. You George, you now jury. If you come and take these pictures in two, you can take a peace that you pictures in the Georgiana want your blogging anyway, started like you know, you scratch my bag. Our schedule is, and so your biggest platform is is still Facebook or its instagram as well, is actually facebook. What its facebook himself we desire to grow. Our instagram, you know by our sweet spot, is Facebook and that's when local party list, so I think that's why it yeah about also you gotta. You just put turn on your phone, put on Instagram. Why are you doing on Facebook and then you're getting a too for one like on the livestock brass? You gotta you gotta do in both at once. I think an Youtube, if you can, like all all the things because I feel like doing it. Yes good. I just feel like it's about playing smarter, not harder, like how do we take this content that we already have and then redistributive or just
make it easier for you to do what you're doing right now. also have this incredible team behind you, which I think is so rad. We talked about this and I went- and I ordered my jewelry and then I got. I got hand written no from one your girl saying how much she hoped that talk about that. Being the brand and how important that is too what you ve created. Why? I do not always have a team like for a good while it was just me I decided to go out on a whim like I was making money, but that really making enough to be able to afford an employee and I remember some when I finally hired a bit the bullet, and I remember some pity fridays. I would hope that she left and forgot that it was tabled. Ah, you know you ve been there dude. We have all been there like. Please you walk away, you know what he's like Teresa Dynamic, wouldn't hear much more money than it did you know, so we built the team,
But what is important to me about the team is that they buy into the vision and that You know any decision that we may. I still consult them in it. There a team that I make decisions will not necessarily at him, but I make decisions were so knowing that they have influence in the brain in there just not coming and being told what to do. Every day They are really invested in Sassy Jones and they want Sassy Jones to win and go far as much as I do and had happy employees. Oh my gosh, makes all the difference in the world to your customer experience. You know how you customer ultimately feels when they walk away from your brand, absolutely having like doing the shipping yourself and having that handled like knowing, that there is a person on the other side of it like you're, not using a third party vendor in actually is coming from your hair warehouse in their your girls, one. How much was that? How much of that plan to what it was that you wanted to build? Well,
We wanted to be a really personable brain. And we wanted to make you feel soft and fuzzy, but for a while and even still today- They demand issues crazy and thought. We all remember back last year we were so behind One is Rachel you like a month behind. We can offer the emails, and that makes me cringe, because I want all the customers to be happy, and that moment, unlike what we need to outsource, all of my smart friends had outsourced All of their operations have gone to this warehouse in it seems really attracted because they consume no orders to engage at its taking Michael a month to get these borders out and so we went into talks with the warehouse in we're about to sign contracts that meet two things at me there. I would no longer be able to employ women, which is something that I take pride in October.
after fire them, but also they were not willing to write a him ready now, The third party logistics companies could enable them at our meeting. They were defined a week. That is not something that we're gonna. Do it just takes entirely too much time? Animal Ok, I've gotten this far with you. You know this is what we do and it's a non negotiable and they came back to the time. more n didn't agree, and so I couldn't agree so we still writer hand written note in actually it's a lovely language. It is a really is that makes it said special. I also feel like just the unity, email confirmation that you get an everything feels thoughtful weapon. Isn't anything. I think that sometimes we struggle without a bit like things are moving so fast that it. doesn't have the personality that I wanted to have a little bit like your orders on the way like yea, but yours is like Hager all that there are four things you need to know about. Your order like it's gonna, be rat too,
evident back scissors. your friends like it just so, it does really feel like your friend is talking to you about. What's on the way, which I just I think so many operate like a mess that peace they miss, that it should fill friend. In special and unique to the experience that you have the customer. how did you know to do that? I I, like being don't like I'm warm and fuzzy. When I do business with someone I am customer, whose a letter writer like them, I don't have the greatest. Yet I watched you know, but I am also the customer who will go and get the best route you ever ever had an outstanding experience. We so I put myself, in the customer shoes alight and so I knew that if I'm gonna do to successfully brain like there's nothing special about having an accessory branch. What's gonna make, you do no girl, you know What's gonna make you different. So I know that women of packaging solely
You ve, been in a pink in gold, glittery box and you know woman, love, bright colors and bright beings and things that make them feel undeniably beautiful and confidence, and so, when we are speaking to our customers, even in our product descriptions we're using golf round were usage. You no words words where you can see yourself wearing the jewelry rang. There were talking like on date night. These hearings for sparkle, gorgeously, under restaurant lighting and all of a sudden, you have yourself with your booting rights. Our right. Could you give me ass yeah the picture right inside ideas, how I did it issues about how I wanted the alibi did business with a great Britain in I had to put those things in place. Suddenly, remembering today, How much of the marketing that you do is about educating the customer on how to use the product almost
yeah I'll do the same, and I think that a lot of people listening that might be like a allow ball moment for them to understand. Is for instance, that the jury that fisheries has is its unique, it's beautiful, it's colorful, it's not something that you see everywhere else, so its eye catching. but that also means that power Billy women see it and maybe they fell little intimidate at all? So if you see her fee, if you look at her any of this, that you are creating she's, showing you ten different ways to wear that necklace the season and with the stuff tat we it's like what is a journal? People like why don't know how to use a journal. I don't know what it's for so we're constantly. Our marketing is not just pretty pictures. It's showing you how This is gonna work in your life, so we talk about the alphabet yeah. I actually Nick, it's more will be more important to teach. Rather than
How about you yeah?
