Nostradamus delighted us all in grade school, but it turns out the real guy wasn't quite as prescient as we were led to believe. In truth, he wrote a lot of purposefully confusing riddles that people have twisted into meaning exactly what they want them to mean. Learn all about Nostradamus in this classic episode.

It's a little on the nose for nostradamus? Actually, as I should have been even more big like way: vaguer yeah. That was like explicit for him. Yeah yeah, because nostradamus used to like to just basically take concepts and words and put them together and pretend like they were
happen nostradamus, nor little nutmeg I am, and when I was younger person I realize like from this, and he has peak that I was in some pretty cool occult stuff red lots of books about goes
things like that sure me too, a little bit and then now is like an older person like I wanted to go to duke university to study parapsychology. Oh really, I was into like that kind of wow and then now as an older person, I'm like and some of the things I used to believe just do a face palm here there like, for example, we got into real science and that's usually what happens yes to the pseudoscience is kind of fade away. Once you start educating yourself. Well, we shouldn't say: parapsychology is necessarily a pseudo science, so it's not fringe science that were that, were
poo, poo nostradamus, not sp parapsychology in general, but for instance, you are, I remember not only believing but frequently saying, dude nostradamus. He had to be exude once like at the then church. He was buried at yeah, they were like expanding and they had to exumas grave and they open his casket and he was holding a tablet that had the day
a big, I thought there was real. I got there really happened when I was a slightly younger man. That's all
yeah. You are in your late twenties, right,
yeah. I remember I didn't read up on stuff like this, but I was a big fan of like linear noise in search of
yeah outrage show tv shows that can dabbled in the french and what's wrong with that nuthin thought of the wrong with enjoying that kind of thing
liking it very interesting and wondering if possibly some of it could be real know nothing wrong with exploration right, but the key to keeping aig off your face as much as possible is to doing research, especially when a claim is very extraordinary. Yeah.
really look into it. Yeah like her, I had I looked around. Her internet been invented, yet her eyes looked around and I probably would have found somewhere some entry saying like that is absolutely not true. Well, that's one of the the internet is one of the big reasons. I think, because before that was around you know, it's you'd have to go search out a book that was written, bridling, nostradamus yeah and the card catalogue
and it was just a lot harder back. Then you know yeah, but the internet is a double edged, fiber optic line. I mean there's a lot of sites out there that I mean no drama, has gotten probably even more popular and even more play since the internet was invented. Oh sure, you know yeah. So, let's talk
this guy was trying to separate the man from the myth and really getting too who nostradamus
It's because there is a lot more than a crackpot writer of vague predictions. That's true! He was a one of the tough parts is, though, is that there's so many disagreements about his biography? Even yeah
I didn't find that necessarily I yeah I saw one guy wrote a book at him. That said, he wasn't even a doctor, whoa. Okay, that is a disagreement yeah. Well, let's go ahead and gather then, okay, so he was supposedly born in fifteen o three, no, not true. In france, he was born Michel de nostra dumb. He became nostradamus because he latinized his name after he graduated from medical school, which apparently was customer at the time. That's right, but when he was born he was Michel de nostra
yeah and he was or his family was educated and they believed in education. So he was from an early age, an academic in a traditional sense right, nothing wacky, right out of the gate, while his grandfather instructed him as when he was a younger man, taught them languages and kind of sparked his interest in all sorts
different topics in all things: learning yeah, an german you we did the inquisition episode yeah
where there are a lot of jewish people who converted, but just converted in name only yea, apparently nostradamus his family was one of those, oh, so that wasn't a genuine conversion, supposedly not gotcha. Again it could be myth. It could be whatever because he was on good terms with the local inquisition and the local church officials for most of his life, so I guess either they didn't suspect him or they he had
pass, I don't know what's interesting, let make sense he studied Estrato, I'm sorry astrology, which was at the time respected, well respected as science yeah and in supposedly his fellow astrologers thought he was full of it are really his contemporaries,
strategy pals, while one of the things that he did was he studied, and this would play out throughout his well I'll, say his career as a predictor. But you really does wrote the book the centuries book which will get too, but he studied astronomical patterns that coincided with historical events. That's astrology well yeah, but he he would basically use those to predict the future of its like by some accounts. He didn't even say that he was a prophet. He said I study history
and basically history repeats itself in so some countries, the stars and when these things line up pattern wise in they certain year in the future. This may happen again yet so I'm that's like real astrology yeah. We should do in episode on that. Yeah. I've been thinking about that for a while this one a well the the article we have like,
like spirits in the Middle east, it so one sided in sceptical. There's just a picture of a big luke were heard, but I looked into I looked into it and I there's that the is fascinating what they used to believe in all of the holes. You can punch in either, but am it's a pretty? We should do that. Sometime yeah, I had my chart done, one time like for real by friends, mom and dumb. I remember lookin out and thinking like clouds. A lot
Like me, yeah, it's pretty accurate but yeah, and even even remove that last part yeah the amount of thought and effort in what it's, based on in the ancient tradition of an interesting that in and of itself, is fascinate. Yeah totally agree, you know, and then you get into we're we're totally doing astrology at some point. Alright
so what he was doing was astrology, apparently, where he ran a foul of his fellow astrologers was to make predictions of how something would come about rather than the next time. Venuses
in the seventh house of mars and a cat catches fire the
there's a whole array of earthquakes or something like that. He went further,
unlike made predictions about, you know what was going to set this often like where the people involved were going to come from and lay it and then he
very, very vague bright and so all that added to the astrologers disdain for him, because he gave him a bad name, pretty much his error, all right,
so
Tom, supposedly in fifteen twenty two study, medicine, legit medicine and became a physician. Most people agree that he became a professor in a physician in southern france and apparently was pretty good doctor
at treating plague. Victims is very head of his time yeah, even though he lost his wife and son, I'm sorry, his children to the plague and his wife yeah, and that had a big effect on his life. Obviously, he basically sent him on the road for a decade, which is where he kind of came up with this plan to write this book, so he um he was a. He was a progressive doctor in that, like he prescribed sanitation practices yeah and he prescribed fresh air, and he also apparently came up with a rose hip lozenge to help cure plague, mild cases of plague, and that actually makes sense because rose hips are packed with vitamin c, so he was a pretty good doctor, a good record and from that he
he lived in this village with his wife and children and had a patron who basically supported the family and then once his wife and children died, he couldn't cure them. His star really fell in this village and about the same time, he also had a pretty good sense of humour. About the same time, they were raising a statue of the virgin mary in the local church, and he thought it was. The ugliest thing endeavours
in the end, he was making a comment on the artist's abilities: yeah, not the virgin mary, but he said these guys are casting demons. Like basically saying that's a really ugly virgin mary right. Well, the artist didn't like this. In turn him into the inquisition
that's about the time when he ended up on the road yeah and he went all over europe and just to basically he was described as sort of wandering ah, but he did meet another woman and get remarried on his wanderings think toward the tail end of his wanderings about eight years later and moved to law in france, and then,
he started kind of getting his getting his act together in a
then a real way to publish like he'd. He said you know what I'm gonna put together, this book of power
policies, I've been messing around I've been getting the idea or arms can do it. So we'll talk about what came out of that right after this
My father was like me,

the
so chuck nostradamus is settling down in salon. Salon,
selective and dumb he's deciding to put his awesome thoughts down into quatrains nets,
right into a book called the centuries, but at the time he just called it the prophecies yeah the prophecies of Michel Nostradamus. I think what, when did they rename it? I think after his death, yeah and apparently the centuries had nothing to do with time, but it was in the structure, the organized structure of the book itself or a thousand quatrains or new orleans vs in hundreds yeah.
for some reason so that the centuries I wasn't there wasn't chronological or anything like that now and it was it- was a. It became a huge, sincere,
and do a few things one simply enough was that the printing press was a recent invention and books were a big deal now in alike. Widespread books like those now something good
literally be a best seller for the first time, so it aligned in that way and and another is that he just sort of fit the dark times. It was, and a book for and of it's time with all his dire predictions. That was you know in the the catholics and protestants were
worrying and there were all kinds of people say at the end of the world- was coming and it was just. It was basically put out right at the right time and widespread because
Printing press and then a queen catherine de medici of france was a really superstitious queen and dumb. He predicted her husband Henry seconds death young, pretty specifically for once yeah, but we'll poke holes in that too, and it happened a few years later, and so she invited him to the court, which was like the most popular court in europe at the time, and so he got a lot of attention there. So he was sort of like the
writing superstar of his day. Because of all these things aligning yeah, I mean like he wasn't one of those posthumously.
hundred authors like he was celebrating his time. Supposedly he met some monks on the road once and I correctly said that one of them was going to be. The next pope bam know a case solved. Nostradamus is the real deal cause that supposedly happened, so he had like a whole whole gene
going where he would retire retire in the evenings evenings and he would concentrate on maybe a fire, the flames of fire meditate on
or he would take a ball with some herbs or something in it.
Just zone out. On those I tried to read the herbs like you said I dunno if he was doing lines of nutmeg, but he was ingesting nutmeg, most likely yeah, which could be hallucinogenic right and he had to have been rich to just be doing nutmeg. Ganache yeah cause they just discovered that yeah and he would just kind of zone out. He would apparently he got help from an angelic figure. That's what he says said and then he he would just see the future. It would come to him. The the thing is: is
nostradamus. These prophecies didn't come to him all convoluted in cookie
in. However, he put them, he understood exactly what was going to happen. Well, yeah, he supposedly convoluted them on purpose to avoid persecution during his lifetime yeah. That is supposedly what he told his son from his second marriage. Is that says R? Yes,
they were doing all this on purpose and because they will, you now string me up as a heretic, because and so early accurate yeah. They will
find out, which I mean at the time it was of a genuine concern. So it's it's not like. This is just a preposterous claim. My nose to dams is part. It's just that force. Sceptics have no stewardess, it's just one more convenient little thing is: if you read the quatrains, they make almost no sense in
all sense, simultaneously yeah, depending on whether you reading them on their own, whether china look at em in contacts,
Well yeah it. While we might as well go and talk about that. It's one of the big reasons you can poke holes in. It is because there were even experts, say it's hard to find two copies of this book that are the same. Oh yeah, yeah, because it was translated. You know hundreds of times it was a the early printing presses. Were you know they weren't super accurate and they would, if the printer may be didn't know where exactly what he meant, they would say. Well, I think he meant to actually have an apostrophe here and in middle french that apostrophe could come
politely change the meaning of the word right, and so, beyond that confusion and the translation confusions there are like you said, there are many different ways to interpret something and if something didn't come true, you could probably find a version out there of it that supports whatever you think he predicted right. You know yeah that there's a pretty good example that people give of a translation problem and after nine eleven which we'll talk more about in a second yeah, they some some quatrain of irk. I guess an assemblage of nostradamus quatrains were kind of bandied about as proof that he predicted it riaa. One of them was that there'll be smoke in the new city, while in his actual text in the centuries he wrote,
villa news: the news which means in french the new city yeah. But it was also a city in france at the time, but it was probably talking about yeah. So there
a lot of translation and interpretation that can come together and really lead to a misunderstanding. If there is even such a thing at all with nostradamus, can you misunderstand: am I don't think it's possible? Can you misunderstand, what's not under
Annabelle right words. Well, since we're talking about interpreting, we might go onto the famous hitler prediction
beasts ferocious with longer will cross the rivers of hers. A greater part into the battlefield be against his stern, stirred into a cage of iron higher up the great one redrawn when the child of germany armilly observes that nothing, nothing and I would hope we added some effect to that. Jerry, yes, vocal effects, something menacing, maybe or maybe we should do like clown music,
So history this was has long been looked at, is the protection of the rise of hitler. Yea says germany and
Yeah, it's clearly germany and history, but history was actually the lower danube river and so most people-
sceptics would say, while he didn't say hitler, he said hyster since I was a place, that's probably what he meant
or he would have said hitler yeah canada, miss right there. Some people say well hitler,
born around the danube, so he still met hitler. That's exactly the point.
People will find a way to interpret it if they choose to buy the nazis as still use this to their advantage. They actually dropped pamphlets containing this prediction onto france from planes because they want to scare them. I k even Nostradamus said, were common and were coming in a word. I guess it did for a while. So there's, basically the if fury sceptic of of nostradamus. You say
okay, first of all he's not really saying anything right or anything, concrete right in a believer of nostradamus would say, while he even said that you're not supposed to get it unless you're one of the enlightened few who
area huge. He I happen to be one of its not for this time. It's for people far from now to understand right and so the sceptic, that's arguing, old sigh and then say: ok, here's the thing that, even if you, even if he is saying something like even there, if there's something clear, he's making a prediction- and it does seem to come true if you look at events in human history as numbers on a graph eventually
statistically speaking, one of MR arms is very vague predictions about the rise of a power yeah, a war sure in earthquake, something like that is going to happen, and maybe something will have even a couple of predictions that will fit one event: yeah like the date
add a line somehow write something here, because every once in a while, he used dates, but for the most part he didn't. But if you look at it statistically, yes, even nostradamus predictions are
become come true over a long enough period of time. Right, if again, if you read the predictions, it's hard to say his predictions come true because he's not really predicting anything. It's not like. You sat back and said sometime in the twentieth century, a guy with
the terrible mustache is going to come to power and there's going to be a a horrific war ii. As a result, nothing even approaching that yeah I mean you read what the hitler prediction was like. It could be anything yeah, but even if he had predicted something, if you take his predictions as predictions, if you put them over the arc of time, sure eventually you're going to get hit. So that's one argument: a skeptical argument against nostradamus yeah, especially if you believe and like most people do that history repeats itself in some fashion. Yet over long enough timeline, when he himself said that that's the model he used was using the stars to look at past historical events to predict future events right to kind of make sense, and, and also some people say, these aren't even
dickens? Because a prediction is something that you realise before the fact and despite the fact that thousands of scholars have studied nostradamus and millions of people have read him, no one has ever pointed out something before happened. It's always afterwards that they go back and see, look see here. He said this was gonna happen and it happened right because we interpret it that way, but no one's ever said stopped anything in its tracks
as astrodome has predicted it as an excellent point. You know it also raises another argument against the nostradamus in that the people who follow nostradamus. Like you said it's always, the interpretation is always after the fact and the allegations of shoehorning occur where basically, you make something fit, you've shoehorn it in to context, and in doing so you cherry pick stuff that makes sense and you ignore stuff that doesn't make sense yeah. In fact, I think this article, this one line, says it best. Imprecise language lends itself well to subjective interpretation. Yeah I mean, if you throw something super vague out there, you could come up with one hundred different interpretations of it, yet you know so at poetry. That's exactly, and you know that, despite all of these very great arguments, there's still plenty of people out there who believe in nostradamus, it almost seems like there should be a phase in life,
if you do go through believing that nostradamus is real because yeah it does kind of lend some sort of something to life. It also coincides with being really into pink floyd. Is that it's true? So we'll talk a little more about some of the people who argue for and against nostradamus, specifically centered, around nine
Right after this is my father is a black start. It was like beetle

ok, chuck, nine eleven
in an almost immediately people said: nostradamus predicted this year, his sales went through the roof, apparently and supposedly his name was Google's more than the sum up in london or george bush after nine eleven really
So they say that sounds I get something someone does rights on the internet, but I believe it
Here's why his star rose again was because this quatrain emerged where it was like yeah, that's pretty close. So what
been yeah. I remember hearing it thinking, oh my gosh, so you want to read this one year.
Where'd you get it reach her. Can we get the sound affecting in place a clown music
in the city of great rendered. Two brothers torn apart by chaos.
The forgers endures or the great leader will become the third beard. War will again with a big city, is burning learning at super specific yeah. The only thing I able
Don't know Donna most people would agree on is calling new york, the city of god or george bush, the great later yeah did but the two brothers. Clearly those are the two towers, the fortress. Indeed,
the pentagon, the great leader bush. Yes, some people said and then
the third war will begin when the big city is burning well
at least one more war I dunno, if it was world war three, but a pretty huge couple of wars started up as a result. So yeah people are saying here. It is finally evidence that shows almost incontrovertibly. That nostradamus was the real deal,
it's the argument against the chuck. Well, it was made up the nostradamus damas de right. Now
It was apparently written by several years ago
I got a guy marshal was a student in canada and said he.
Actually using that as a demonstration of what bunk nostradamus was like, I could write something like this, and people would think he predicted nine eleven and some our bid became something that nostradamus road ahead.
actually proved it by writing there in ninety ninety seven and then getting picked up in two thousand one. Yes already set out to do work work.
Perfectly. He he'll have to wait more than four years, so he basically showed just how many.
This is where the gullible people can be when their reading nostradamus his work, because no checks anything do they see it and they click on it and they posted to social media, and
it's done and here's here's another really good example that a little while ago, this still cracks me up.
click hole. You know the onions like a buzzfeed like site, I was at onion, yeah, add another, I believe so yeah, I'm almost positive. I know clicker leo yeah, okay, so click on satirical site of like Buzzfeed, he shirts and they release something called five tragedies: weirdly predicted by adam sandler and dude
they are so. Can I read a couple: oh yeah, so read all five in the wake of the nineteen ninety three tragedy and apparently people went back and saw that Adam sandler during his early stand up career, would mutter something's coming to waco. Something dark like during his stand up show is that true? None of this is true. Okay, I thought they just picked apart real things and no okay, so the nineteen ninety seven
our crash, that they killed princess Diana. Patently, if you go back and watch happy Gilmore, which was made,
Ninety ninety six sandler looks directly in the cameron says: are queens eldest the beautiful?
our will under three december it can keep going.
BP oil spill they happen into. Doesn't ten in the gulf yet apparently adam
Taylor was on Conan o in two thousand five and used is wearing a t shirt. That said BP,
el spill in five years,
because in ten haitian earthquake here, the? U n estimates that two hundred and twenty two thousand five hundred seventy people were killed.
Apparently and Adam sandler, funny people he estimated two hundred and twenty thousand on them, and then lastly,
asia, airlines fight three, seventy adam sandler when he was opera man yeah there.
The ninety. Ninety three oppermint sketch raises a missing plainer,
It's from malaysia makes me in saying this makes sense in due time as good,
here's, the thing man, people believed that
We are not reliable, I'm not kidding. You went by
oh that, like somehow Adam sandler had made all these crazy predictions in. This is a real thing.
his. Apparently they didn't announced that when click bay came out, that it was a satirical site that BP or for the teachers for good well
Let's get into some of these, then first of all,
to further the nine eleven thing. There were a couple of other quatrains which had been cobbled together to try and support the nine eleven thing and but, like I said they weren't as he wrote them. They like would combine thing right, which is just silly, because that goes against everything that he was saying was that each quatrain is it's own thing,
one of em century ten quatrain seventy two, the year, nineteen, ninety nine seven months from the sky, will come the great king of terror to resuscitate the great king of the mongols. Before and after mars, rains bye, good luck. That last part sounds like it's from a fortune
that before nine eleven back and nineteen point, ninety nine, some people thought he was for
in the end of the world would be on July. Twenty four. Ninety. Ninety nine- and I remember this-
happening and I remember it being a big deal. Those like genuine concern from some people, like some stores in france, had like close out
else. There was this one. French does
weiner, who like cancelled his big. He was a big believe. Any cancel this big show and, of course it didn't happen, and then it was real
calculated, and everyone said no, no, no, it was supposed to be July. Twenty fourth, have you read it this way? It means august eleventh and of course, the world didn't and then either in august. How do you get august eleventh from seven months in the nineteen? Ninety nine? Well again it was there were some different translations that may be where
weren't enough to to it yeah yeah I gotcha, but then that one was also used for nine. Eleven was repurposed for nine eleven right there, like he was this close yeah exactly a couple,
there's a while they combine now and with century six quatrain. Ninety seven, which says it forty five degrees, the sky will burn fire to approach the great new city in an instant, a great scattered
we'll leap up when one will want to demand proof of the normans. What is that last thing? I'm not sure. That's a thing like you can't just pick part of it in the discount the rest night and say that you know he was wrong on that, but that's exactly where people did while they did, because several quatrains referred to
anti christ for your called made us and if you'd rearrange the letters, it could be some be here and so people used. That is proof, but they also didn't. They failed to mention that, previous to that they used. It is said arm like up to the day before,
nine eleven yeah. They they were saying it was. Saddam Hussein was made us because Mavis fell backwards, his shoe bomb kind of a reach. If you ask me it is well in the forty five degrees part of the quatrain. Some people said that new york city's around forty degrees, five minutes north latitude, so that's close yeah. But again he was said
The new city will burn at forty five degrees villain away. They are the new year. Is F about forty five degrees latitude, so
it's the interpretation. I don't know who is really at fault here is enough to damage. Is it the people who just blindly accept Mr Donnelly's versions? Is it, though, because Mr Dimas purposefully obfuscate? It is stuff, so I think he's a little bit responsible for this too.
I imagine, since he has a great sense of humour and made fun of that, not a guy statue of the virgin mary. He is sitting in his coffin holding a plan.
with some future date when he'll be examined, is laughing and laughing yeah. Maybe
we mention Henry the second. He predicted his death, this quatrain
the young lion will overcome the old one on the field of battle and single combat. He will put his eyes in a cage of gold to fleets, one then to die in a cruel death ass, a means to india,
fees, and this actually happened. King Henry was in a jousting competition, but it was.
feel the battle it was in a friendly. It was a party basically, and
captain montgomery who was younger the younger lion, did joust a hit hit him in the in the eye and through the throat, so the two injuries, supposedly from one man yeah, but that was all that his his wife or de medici queen dvd, she needed to know she was like you know, holy crap. This has come true, yes, and he knows what he's doing john F Kennedy that the challenger, the great fire of london people have said that he's pretty predicted all these things, but we could sit here all day poking holes in the you know that
